Title: Amazon Kindle Fire Tablet ($199) + $99 Kindle Touch + $79 Kindle
Post by: Eel O'Brian on September 28, 2011, 10:11:16 AM
They have an "event" today, but apparently Bloomberg already dropped the dime on it:

http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/28/amazon-fire-tablet-unveiled-7-inch-display-199-price-tag/

Forked version of Android 2.something, 7 inch screen, no camera, no mic.  Rumor is this is a stopgap tablet so they can have something out for the holiday, and the bigger/better version is coming Q1 2012.

Bezos just announced the Kindle Touch Reader.

Updated version of the regular Kindle reader also dropping to $79, evidently.

The ereaders seem nice but that tablet looks like a dud to me. It seems as limited as the nook color and that's pretty old already.

How does the $79 kindle work with no touchscreen or keyboard?

Kindle Touch is $99, has something called X-ray, where Wiki info and such pops up when you highlight words and phrases.  That sounds pretty cool, actually. 3G version is $150.

$79 version has no touch screen or keyboard, has buttons, no X-ray feature.  I would imagine you have to scccccccccccccrrrrrrrrrroooooooooollllllllll through onscreen menus and keyboard.  Probably targeted as just a straight ereader for people who already own tablets/ipads, or as a companion piece to their own tablet.  I dunno why you wouldn't just spend the extra $20, though.

Kindle Fire has 7" Gorilla Glass IPS Display, dual core processor, multitasking, 8GB storage, whispersync for movies/tv, custom browser called Amazon Silk which allegedly loads faster than any other tablet browser by using cloud cache

Well the number one reason I want an e reader is for digital comics.  Does Amazon have DC, Marvel and Image stuff?  I know I can get all 3 on the Nook at least and load them up manually for whatever I can't find.  Can I do the same thing on the Kindle?

Amazon has their own version of the Android App store.  You can go check it out and see if the apps you want are there:

Bah.  No DC comics.  No Marvel comics.  Not even a comixology app.

I guess I could load them manually as PDF's but I want the convenience of being able to download them.

Fuck and this thing doesn't come out til Nov 15th right?  I wanted to buy an ereader in a week or two.  Fuuuuuuuuuuuu

i think they pretty much just claimed the 7" tablet market

Its a shame the death of an e-reader probably means the death of a bookstore chain- i've always liked B&N...hell I liked Borders stores too. But at least we'll have...a whatever all the more reason to order books in my underwear.

i wouldn't count out b&n yet, they still have their nook color 2 to announce, and of all the bookstore chains they are the most likely to be left the one still standing

they've certainly just been marginalized, though

also, mups:  in my opinion, reading comics on anything less than an ipad-sized screen is kinda  :-\

you have to zoom in all the time, or read in landscape mode, i had an android craptablet once and at that size reading comics wasn't a great experience

if you are mainly going to use a tablet to read comics i would pick up one of the android honeycomb tablets out right now, like the acer iconia or asus transformer, those have 16:10 1280x800 screens, which is almost the perfect size for a comic page, and you can get some pretty sweet deals on factory refurbs if you check around

hmm  might do that then.  Because yeah, I pretty much want it for reading comics and books when I'm feeling lazy in bed.  Comics is a huge, huge part though.  Web browsing on it is a plus though.

this is what comics are gonna look like on a 10.1 " 16:10 1280x800 screen

some of that shit the guy is talking about has nothing to do with the tablet and everything to do with the scanner used to make the digital copy

B&N wont come out on top, Kindle has mindshare, and you cant beat that without huge efforts and $$$. Half the people who talk about e-readers call e-readers 'kindles', people say 'google it' instead of search for it, iphone's flaws and apples misteps are easily forgotten because thats all people have in their heads. Its a stupid aspect of being a consumer but there you have it.

B&N doesn't have a fraction of the resources that Amazon does. They can't put out something on the scale that Amazon is doing for the same price. The price alone easily means the Kindle will be the (non-Apple) tablet everyone will be getting as gifts this Christmas as opposed to what B&N has to offer.

I never said they were gonna win or come out on top, mainly because I don't care about that kind of thing

I just said they'd survive, people still like going into their stores

The warehouse Books-A-Million type stores of the country might fade away, but I think B&N will stick around a while (although on a smaller scale)

It's just an app for Amazon's streaming service. Like how Netflix is on iPad and the like. I think Amazon said Netflix will be on this as well.

I still haven't bought the new(old)touch nook, so I might get one of these.

are either the 79 or 99 versions higher res? what's the difference anyway? they look the same

ok, so that's deceptive.  the $79 nook isn't touch screen, so typing and everything is done on the small directional pad.  or am I still reading this wrong?

The 99 one has better battery life and more storage than the 79 one (in addition to being touch screen). Both have the new e-ink screens that are better than the ones on the previous kindles. I believe they are about equal to the nook's screen since the new kindles only refresh every 6 pages like the nook.
