Jet Set Radio was the first game I ever imported. I remember thinking just how awesome it was to play it in Japanese months before it came out in North America.
-
For a 3D game, JSRF is practically ancient at this point (nearly 10 years old), but it still looks so good thanks to cel-shading + great art + enormous stages. I'd love to see what Sega could do with modern hardware; it would be glorious. Too bad Smilebit is dead and the game would probably suck. :(
JSR for XBLA would be good too. Now that SC5 and Sega Bass Fishing are out as downloads, maybe Sega will move on to their next batch of ports.
-
Smilebit is dead officially now that they turned the rgg team into the rgg studio. :(
at least we can play jsrf on 360

It was one of the first games I bought twice...imported, then got the improved U.S. version (had more levels/music added). I played the shit out of JSR.
Never liked JSRF as much.
-
Yeah, I also bought the NA version, but never played it much.
-
Miller Ball Breakers and Electric Toothbrush are so fucking awesome. I love the whole style of this game, even tuned me on to Jurrasic 5 and a bit of backpack hiphop for a little while.
-
I still listen to the JSR, JSRF, and Ollie King (well, the JSRF remixes it has) soundtracks all the time.
-
Didn't the NA version have a Rob Zombie song (Dragula?)? That seemed so out of place.
-
Yeah, but only in the "New York" flashback levels, IIRC.

Yep. It was still really jarring, though.
-
the only good NA track is Jurassic 5
-
Oh shit, the whole Deavid Soul album is on Spotify. Listening now

I hated JSR but JSRF is sooooo good. Also renegades of funk isn't in JSR :piss op

It's a tribute video to JSR......

Stuff Himumu in THE THUNDERDOME with demi! Two men enter, one man leave!

Probably my biggest disappointment ever. Hate the physics and controls and the level design was pretty obtrusive too.
I do want to see the concept revisted, but apparently Sega is on the record for shooting down a pitch kuju/headstrong had for a jsr sequel. Never again.
-
lol go back to playing nintendo games
-
If this was a thread about a new JSR, it would say NEW JSR COMING.
::)

Come on guys, it was a himu thread. A himu thread with the title all in caps. Himu never brings the news, he only brings randomly-timed excitement.

Man it be so better if developed by Nintendo, yes. Momentum wouldn't be a bitch to generate. The soundtrack would definitely be for the worse, though.

Gaining momentum is easy. Go back 20 feet, skate, grind.

Yeah after making that post I realised such a hypothetical product would lose its concept/attitude/charm.
On a mechanical level though, I found JSR an interesting idea marred by poor control assignments, floaty physics, and level design that didn't flow smoothly. Too often I had to choose between backing up a large distance to grind at the right speed on approach or I could save time by walking up stairs in far too many instances.
-
Eh, you get used to the physics. They're definitely not perfect, but the controls have a learning curve. I have no problem playing JSR now compared to when I first played it. You eventually play it enough times and you master the controls.
The level design however, is perfect. Maybe you don't like timed levels where you have to memorize level layout and have a plan of attack, but that's what makes JSR's level design so great. Learning the levels, executing a plan (green tags versus red tags for points or for time), and getting so good that you can get a Jet ranking on every level is the meat and potatoes of JSR. It's arcade-y gameplay that remains fun no matter how many times you do it.
-
At TGS, when JSR launched, they had a poster for it by Matsumoto Taiyou, or someone who was aping him REALLY well. I really wanted it.
-
I like JSRF a lot, but I understand all of the hate toward it. It's nothing like the original game at all, instead it focuses on exploring the enormous stages and finding all of the tags and hidden stuff, instead of running through a stage quickly, hitting the tags, and getting a high score. JSR and JSRF are two completely different styles of games, but they're both awesome.
-
Yep. They both rock. JSRF owned. I actually think Emcee would enjoy JSRF more than JSR.
