Nintendo DS Crosses 50 Million Units Sold
The best-selling video game system in U.S. history reached another milestone in September: Lifetime sales of the Nintendo DS™ family of systems have surpassed 50 million units, according to the NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States.
“The Nintendo DS forever changed the gaming landscape, and the fact that consumers continue to embrace the platform is a testament to its value and mass appeal,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Our hand-held story continues with the Nintendo 3DS system, which just had its second consecutive month of growth and enters its first holiday season with a monster lineup of games, including Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7.”
Other Nintendo milestones reached in September include:
Nintendo sold more than 260,000 Nintendo 3DS™ portable entertainment systems, an increase of more than 10 percent from the previous month. Nintendo has sold nearly 450,000 units of Nintendo 3DS following a price reduction on Aug. 12.
The Legend of Zelda™: Ocarina of Time™ 3D became the first Nintendo 3DS title to surpass 500,000 total units sold in the United States.
Nintendo sold more than 647,000 total hardware units in September, including 240,000 Wii™ systems and more than 145,000 units of the Nintendo DS family.
The 273 million software units sold for the Nintendo DS family equates to more than 107,000 games being sold per day, every day for almost seven years. More than 273 million units of software have been sold for the platform in the United States, including 24 of the top 25 and 43 of the top 50 best-selling portable games in this hand-held generation.

Xbox 360 maintains its lead over the current-generation console market, poised to finish 2011 as the best-selling console.
Kinect momentum continues with a growing portfolio of more than 75 Kinect for Xbox 360 titles in the market by holiday – four times larger than last holiday. A robust Kinect portfolio, blockbuster game releases, major entertainment partnerships and new hardware offerings prime Xbox 360 for a record holiday sales season.
September 2011 NPD highlights include:
· Holding 42 percent share of the overall current-generation console market, Xbox 360 sold 438,000 units in September, maintaining the number-one console spot in the U.S. for 2011. This marks the seventh consecutive month Xbox 360 has had more than 40 percent of the current-generation console market share. (Source: NPD Group, September 2011)
· Total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in September (hardware, software and accessories) reached $534 million, the most for any console in the U.S. and more than total retail spend from the current-generation console competition combined. (Source: NPD Group, September 2011)
· During the month of September, Xbox 360 held six of the top ten console game titles including: “Gears of War 3,” “Madden NFL 12,” “Dead Island,” “FIFA Soccer 12,” “NHL 12” and “Deus EX: Human Revolution.” (Source: NPD Group, September 2011)
“Gears of War 3” launched on September 20 and sales have already soared past three million copies worldwide* in the first week, pushing the franchise beyond one billion dollars in lifetime sales*.
The month of October is packed with exclusive Xbox 360 title launches including “Forza Motorsport 4” and “Kinectimals Now with Bears!” launching earlier this week and “Dance Central 2” and “Kinect Sports: Season Two” available on Oct. 25. Consumers are also looking forward to “Kinect: Disneyland Adventures” and “Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary” on Nov. 15.
In addition to a robust holiday portfolio with something for everyone, Microsoft is rolling out the next generation of TV entertainment on Xbox LIVE, bringing a breadth of content providers to Xbox 360 and innovative user experiences unmatched by any other games or entertainment devices. With nearly 40 world-leading TV and entertainment providers, including Bravo, Comcast, HBO GO, BBC and Televisa, the platform is taking a major step toward realizing its vision to bring all the entertainment you want, shared with the people you care about, made easy.
All of the entertainment, partner support, record growth and sales momentum make us confident that Xbox 360 will have another record year.
SCEA
NPD’s September report saw double-digit growth for both PS3 software (52%) and hardware (20%), as increasing brand awareness continues to fuel interest with consumers. First-party software sales remained strong this month, with boosts from blockbuster titles like Resistance 3. The lower PS3 console price point and the upcoming release of exciting titles – Uncharted 3, Everybody Dance and Ratchet and Clank – will continue PlayStation’s momentum into the holiday season.

Yeah, I gotta agree Gears 3 is pretty much a FLOP. I would have expected it to AT LEAST be able to take out Madden 2012, despite only launching on one console. People just keep coming in here with their lowered expectations and think that plopping down at #2 is somehow acceptable. ::)
-
if any sony exclusive got number two you xbot army woudl go FLOP FLOP FLOP
xbots being defensive and unfair? whoduve thunk it ::) ::) ::)

Not surprised about Resistance. Always thought it was an overblown franchise. If a third party made that series no one would be all hyped about it.

I saw it for $30 at Fry's, so probably Black Friday.
I took the plunge and bought it day one. It's awesome and the Move controls are pretty good.
-
PlayStation 3 FPS sequel Resistance 3 sold 180,000 units during its first month on sale in the US, NPD analyst Anita Frazier has told Eurogamer.
That's a significant drop-off compared to Resistance 2's 385,000 first month total back in November 2008. Resistance 2 went on to sell around three million copies worldwide.
Now there's a hot franchise.

Uncharted?
It will be attacked from every side BF3,MW3,Skyrim,Saints Row,Ass Creed,Zelda,Halo, casual stuff...
Something will suffer there
November will be a very interesting month.
-
somehow i doubt ubi is comforted by giving prestige to kincest/move
just to narrow it in a bit, child of eden ps3 sold a lower number than the current year
Should have always been a PSN/XBLA title.

I think Uncharted will do...okay. It's their only big gun for the fall so they will market the shit out of it and its probably turned into legit one of Sony's few big franchises. (By that I mean broad market appeal)

But who knows, people don't seem much in spending mood this year.
Maybe they are waiting for holidays

definitely agree there.

I know people here don't want to hear it but if any game is gonna get squeezed out among those I would predict Saint's Row. Has nothing to do with the quality of the game. I just don't think that series has the broad fanbase and name appeal of some of these other titles. I also don't think THQ will market it well.

it's because our economy is total dogshit and everyone either has no money to spend, or is afraid to spend what they have. i'm seeing it firsthand at the apartment complex where i contract paint. no one is moving, they're staying put because their credit is fucked and they wouldn't get approved anywhere else, or they can't afford a new round of rent/utility deposits at another place. nonessential purchases like $60 games are the first things to go when your budget gets tight.
-
Europe is the same, tight belts everywhere.
-
Rayman Origins was sent to die.
I don't think its the type of game that would benefit from any other time of year. It screams 'family console game you pick up for a christmas present', which I honestly don't see represented very well this year. 3ds has mario stuff of course.
-
Saints Row is not a "big loser" for November.
-
That's what I'm talking about. The game will not be a "big loser" in terms of sales. It'll do okay, but won't do terrible.
-
What are you talking about? Saints Row the Third looks like the best game of November.
Saints Row 2 has sold over 3.4 million units.
-
What is Wrath's issue with Saints Row? Is he another one of those GTA fans that played it for five minutes and hates it because of the septic avenger activity?
-
Wrath just lost a lot of respect in my book. smh
-
meh.
stop being so sensitive on both sides.
We all have games we don't like that the collective forum likes. I don't like Demon Souls/Dark Souls at all. I don't mind mentioning that in other threads although I don't go into the Dark Souls thread and shit it up. We all got opinions.
Not aimed at anyone in specific.
-
Have no issue with people disliking stuff I like. What I don't get it is trolling it every time it's mentioned without saying why you don't like it begin with.
-
Wrath is so pathetic...
-
That november lineup is fucking insane. Why do publishers do this. It NEVER ends well.
-
Sonic and Rayman are going to be fine. Two E-rated titles aren't exactly competing with a bunch of M-rated shooters and adventure/action/rpgs.
There are so many games I want in November but I have to pass on most. The worst is how it's mostly contained within the first half of the month. After the 15th, it's only really Zelda for the big games.
-
I don't play Saints Row but hating it is impossible.
Too bad I don't care about sandbox games except for Assassin's Creed.
-
Saints Row is garbage and anyone who likes it is a xbot in denial because those games were always terrible and got by on shitty jokes that virgins would laugh at while any respestacble person would realize it's nothing but vanity fair.

With Gears 3 flopping and the PS3 sure to overtake the 360 at any time now, I guess the Year of the PS3 wound up being triumphant after all. I'm sure at Micro$haft, they are working round the clock to whip up a 360 successor to throw out in the market before the power of the PS3 crushes M$ for good.
X-Men Destiny, all home console SKUs combined, sold less than the number of deaths in the June 20th, 1990 earthquake in Western Iran.
I remember when Too Human was about to come out and people were claiming that it would do gangbusters and that SK was probably far into development of Too Human 2 and that Denis Dyack was just trolling for his own amusement.

Why isnt there a thread on the psv launching today?

Like Stoney, I have games which I don't like but the rest of the community seems on fire for. I can't stand either GOW, Gears nor God, they're both crap to me. I keep thinking I should re-try them, maybe I was "wrong," but probably it's down to taste.

wait, phantasy star 5?

you mean the ngp?

Yeah, my bad. They just have the pre orders for it today.

Some new stuff
Just since July there have been some dramatic shifts in this picture. Consider the table below, which gives the average prices for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii in July 2011 and then again in September 2011.
Between these two months the PS3 received its $50 price drop and retailers began offering some versions of the Nintendo Wii for approximately $135. As a result each of those systems saw its average price drop, by about $40 in the former case and $8 in the latter. (Consumers are now spending more on Nintendo DSi and DSi XL systems, on average, than they are on Wii systems.)During the same period, the Xbox 360 saw its price increase by approximately $25. While the NPD Group won't speak to the specifics of a change like this, we suspect that part of the price increase may be related to the end of the Xbox 360 and Windows PC promotion that ran throughout the summer of this year.
Last month we hinted this role reversal could happen. At the time, we said “If consumers think that the Xbox 360 offers a better value, then the $50 PS3 price cut could bring the PS3's average price below that of the Xbox 360 without actually driving PS3 sales higher than Xbox 360 sales.”That's precisely what happened in September 2011. Compared to its closest competitor, Microsoft is selling 12,000 more systems per week and at a $35 higher price. From our experience, this is likely the first time that the Xbox 360 has exceeded the PS3 on average price. Going forward, the dynamic between the two consoles could change if price becomes a stronger determining factor in consumer choice.
In a communication to us about September sales, Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter described Xbox 360 sales as “defying gravity”, a turn of phrase we feel captures precisely the dynamics of the current market. While everyone else is treading water or eking out modest gains on hard-fought price cuts, Microsoft's sales are strong and its system prices are going up.
By contrast seven of the top 10 titles on the all-formats chart for September were new releases, and Madden NFL 12 led at #1.
According to notes from analyst Doug Creutz of Cowen and Company, Madden's total across all platforms came in over 2.3 million units for the 33 days it was on sale during the NPD Group's reporting period. When asked for comment on Madden sales, analyst Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities noted that purchases during the initial five weeks this year were “just under sales in the first eight weeks last year”. He elaborated that that means during Madden NFL 12's first eight weeks in 2011, EA will see “overall sales [...] up at least 5 - 10% for the comparable first eight weeks” of 2010.
In a nutshell, it appears that the late launch didn't affect sales of Madden NFL 12 and EA can expect another year of growth.
Previously we have been able to provide a platform breakdown of Madden NFL sale, but such information was regrettably unavailable this year. When asked to elaborate on the platform breakdown, Liam Callahan, an analyst for the NPD Group, pointed out that “unit sales of Madden NFL 11 were split fairly evenly across the 360 and PS3 in Aug 2010” and that “when adding the PS2 they favored the Sony consoles.” On the subject of this year's release, he explained that “with the launch of Madden NFL 12 in September 2011, unit sales leaned towards the 360.”
That is an interesting shift, and one that highlights just how consistently Microsoft has built its platform and consumer base to sell huge quantities software. Not only did Xbox 360 owners purchase nearly a million units of Madden NFL 12, but they also found the money to buy 2 million copies of Epic's Gears of War 3.
Put a bit more simply, one out of every five units of software sold during September 2011 were either a copy of Madden or a copy of Gears for the Xbox 360.
Now add the Xbox 360's share of Dead Island and FIFA 12 sales and it becomes clear just how well Microsoft has executed on its plan to make its platform the dominant platform for HD-class games. (According to Cowen and Company's Creutz, those titles moved nearly 1 million and over 400,000 units, respectively, across all platforms.)
tl;dr version
Madden...2.3 million
Dead Island...close to million
Fifa 12...over 400k
-
Is that Fifa's sales or the number of accounts that have played it due to hax? :teehee
-
During the same period, the Xbox 360 saw its price increase by approximately $25. While the NPD Group won't speak to the specifics of a change like this, we suspect that part of the price increase may be related to the end of the Xbox 360 and Windows PC promotion that ran throughout the summer of this year.
How does a promotion INCREASE the price of a 360? The actual answer is really obvious.

http://games.ign.com/articles/120/1200238p1.html (http://games.ign.com/articles/120/1200238p1.html)
While EA and Activision will benefit from these two huge titles, the game industry, as a whole, may suffer. John Taylor, videogame analyst at Arcadia Research, believes these two games will cannibalize sales of other game releases this Christmas.
"They will take all the air out of the room, except for Batman, Skyrim and maybe Assassin's Creed Revelations," said Taylore. "One retailer offered about 160 properties last year from October to December, but this year they are cutting that back to about 90. Retailers are showing real caution on all but the five 'sure bets'. Even Gears of War 3 sales disappointed at least one major retailer."
