Fuck all that, I'm watching Ernest Scared Stupid.

I find the horror genre to be the dumbest in all of cinematic history and would usually rather pound my balls with a hammer than watch your average horror flick

Monday, October 17
08:30PM – HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL (1959)  Campy and enjoyable vincent price film.
10:00PM – THE TINGLER (1959) Campy and enjoyable vincent price film
01:15AM – CURSE OF THE DEMON (1958) - Based on an excellent MR James story but not as good unfortunately.  Satisfying ending though.

Monday, October 24
07:00PM – CARNIVAL OF SOULS (1962)  <-- must watch.
08:30PM – A Night at the Movies: The Horrors of Stephen King (2011)
09:30PM – DEMENTIA 13 (1963)
11:00PM – STRAIT-JACKET (1964)  <-- part of the cycle of horror films known as Biddy Horror which followed Whatever Happened to Baby Jane
04:00AM – THE DEVIL RIDES OUT (1968) <-- the book it's based on is so incredibly racist i couldn't stop laughing before throwing it away.  Never seen the film.

Friday, October 28
09:00PM – THE BLACK ROOM (1935)
10:15PM – THE OTHER (1972)  <-- holy shit.  I've never seen this.
12:00AM – DEAD MEN WALK (1943)

03:00AM – 10 RILLINGTON PLACE (1971) <--excellent drama

Saturday, October 29
07:00PM – CAT PEOPLE (1942)  <-- this is good but honestly i fear it may be overrated if you're not a horror geek.  The follow up film Curse of the Cat People is much better but it's not a horror film at all.  It's a psychological drama about children's psychiatry.
08:30PM – VAL LEWTON: THE MAN IN THE SHADOWS (2007) <-- enjoyable documentary
02:30AM – THE SEVENTH VICTIM (1943)  <-- East Village Satanists in the 40s.

I did find Session 9 mildly spooky and would love recommendations for mildly similar stuff.

what did you like about it?  the psychological elements, the setting?

TCM wins. I got one of those hokey DVD boxsets of horror. It does have a lot of old classics, but I'm sure TCM has better copies of the films.

Y'all should watch Carnival of Souls and Repulsion.

I've been cramming this month with a bunch of shitty horror. Tonight I'm going to do Hellraiser "Only Made to Retain the Rights" 9 and Howling "I Was Inspired By a Twilight Werewolf" Reboot tonight!   :hyper

EDIT: Wow, what kind of world do we live in where a modern Howling sequel is far better than a Hellraiser sequel? As much as Hellraiser 9 tries to go back to the formula of the first film it is probably the worst of the franchise (right below Hellworld).  Acting is horrendously bad all the way through along with the editng and cheap, shakey camera work. The new Pinhead always has this bulldog angry look on his face and on top of that the character is portrayed nothing like what he's supposed to be. At least some of the make up effects were good, and they better damn well should considering how long Gary Tunnicliffe has worked on the series. Watch only if you're morbidly curious, otherwise avoid.

yesterday I watched two horror films.

The Eye of the Cat
which is really a caper film, but is quite well done. A rich old woman is dying.  A conniving manipulative young woman finds her estranged son and convinces him to move back to her mansion to become the sole heir of her fortune (a fortune she had previously willed to her collection of cats) .  The son has competition from a brother who has never left, staying to take care of their mother.  The young woman wants the estranged son to kill the mother and get the money faster which seems like a good idea at the time...

The Seventh Victim
is a Val Lewton picture.  It's about a girl whose sister goes missing.  She travels to 1930s Lower East Side Manhattan to search for her, where she discovers she may have fallen into a cult of devil worshipers.  Some very very nice touches with this one. A good chase scene and a few really well done reveals.

Last night, I thought I'd kick things off with the camptastic Trog, a tender love-story between Joan Crawford and a murdering apeman.

When Trog is discovered in a nearby cave, Joan Crawford is on the scene as apparently the only scientist in all of England. She believes that Trog is the missing link, but Evil Rich White Guy doesn't much cotton to her outrageous crackpot theories, like Evolution and women not being in the kitchen. So when he can't get the town council (the ultimate law in the land when dealing with earth-shattering scientific discoveries) to kill Trog, he breaks into lab and turns Trog loose. This leads to a showdown between the police and Trog, where we learn who the real savage monster is.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
It was Trog. And crazy women scientists not knowing their place.

I am currently watching Dark Waters an italian film shot in english filmed in russia.  it is fucked the fuck up.

A woman whose on other acting credit appears to be a bit part in Interview With The Vampire goes to a secluded coveneant to track down her sister.  She uh, fuck i don't even know how to describe this.  blood cults, flagellate nuns, huge latex demons, fucking crazed catholic imagery, holy symbols, six breasted whores of babylon tearing the wombs from virginal nuns to bring their blood god to this plane of existence, girls eating blood.  you can buy the DVD super cheap from Amazon or you can queue it up in Netflix (http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Dark_Waters/70055358?trkid=2361637).  It's fucking great.  Low budget, yes, but still very awesome.  If you like Dario Argento, then you will probably love the all out assault on your senses with this.  Also, the more tuned to catholic imaging you are, the more you will appreciate this, I think.

goddamn i love the internet.

Just watched Sydney Lumet's 1972 film "Child's Play" which was never released on video in America.  It's kind of sort of a horror film but not really.  It's based on a play which was written by Robert Marasco (also known for poetic haunted house novel Burnt Offerings).

From the NYT review of the film

Something is fearfully wrong at St. Charles, a Roman Catholic boarding school for boys, probably not too far from New York. It isn't just a breakdown in discipline, which, after all, is happening everywhere. Although one hesitates to say it in this day and age, the boys are—well possessed.

They make obscene phone calls to the dying old mother of one of their masters. Class rooms have become cages. Violence erupts so regularly that the teachers are cautioned never to leave their students unattended. In what appears to be a ceremony of penitence, one boy allows his eye to be gouged out in the gym. Another is beaten and hung up on the cross in the chapel.

The headmaster, whose patience has its limits, threatens to close the school. Mr. Dobbs (Robert Preston), the genial old English teacher, says in effect, that boys will be boys. Mr. Malley (James Mason), the Latin teacher, and a stern disciplinarian as well as an obvious paranoid, accuses Dobbs of trying to have him, Malley, dismissed. "Devil! Devil!" cries Malley, rapidly becoming unhinged.

It's not a great film, but it is pretty well acted and does kind of tap into that whole "what the hell is happening to our children?" theme that is evident in a lot of early 70s cinema.  The violence is kind of brutal for the rest of them film, but the movie's ending does kind of lack.  I'd like to read the original play to see how it stacks up, but this was worth the time, I feel.

Maniac Cop-  More of a Gaillo / Thriller than a legit horror film.  Someone dressed as a cop is killing innocent citizens and it's up to the accused Bruce Campbell to clear his name and stop the maniac cop before he strikes again.  It's pretty good.  Features a sleazy 80s NY and sleazy NYPD.  Horrible effects works, mediocre acting, but an ok script which actually manages to keep the film going without falling apart too much if you go back to think about it in more detail.

Worth a watch!

So what if the piranhas where just rubber fish that off-screen production assistants flapped at the actors, this movie is still a gas.

"Piranhas."

"Shhh...I told you not to even use that word! What about the damned piranhas?"

"They're eating the guests, sir."

I just luvs em.

watched Dressed to Kill last night.  Lots of sex you could never get away with today.  I enjoyed it even if it did rely heavily on Hitchcock and Clouzot for some sequences.  It was still entertaining and worth watching if for nothing more than an artifact of films they don't really make anymore.  Even the 90s "sexy" thrillers are tame in comparison.

Island of Lost Souls, thank you Criterion for making an EXCELLENT transfer of this film.  This was the first time I could really notice a lot of the details of the makeup and subtleties in Bela Lugosi's Sayer of the Law.  Excellent adaptation of an excellent book.

I quite liked Dagon, but aside from one scene where the lead is captured and uh, tortured, it isn't really torture porn (it's not the extensive centerpiece of the film).  It's pretty good for an HPL adaptation made with a tiny budget, but it's not great by any means.

I haven't seen Dead and Buried yet so I can't comment.

entirely possible that this thing turns to utter poop but 1/3rd of the way in it's kind of slick.  getting a familiar presenter to act as the host, not making any sort of fictional disclaimer, some tricks with the footage where they toy with expectations of an audience both in the know and ignorant of the fictitious nature.  I know it only through people's hazy nostalgic recollections but I'm enjoying it thus far.

they keep using the term "gloryhole" for cubbyhole and it's funny every time.

"tell us about the events in the gloryhole"k

edit;  ugh  the ending.  Loved the first hour of it but they totally took it off the rails for the final third  still, it's interesting from a historical perspective.  Dunno if I would suggest it to anyone else though

A friend of mine recommended Insidious, but his taste in films has been occasionally suspect.

Is it any good?

it's unique, but that doesn't make it any good.

I did find Session 9 mildly spooky and would love recommendations for mildly similar stuff.

I saw Session 9 just recently and quite liked it.  I also like that "mildly spooky" category, some I've seen recently that are at least "good" were:

Lake Mungo (very cool I thought)
Skeleton Key
Mirrors
The Uninvited
Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County (Blair Witch-style)
Dark Water (Jap)

I also have two movies in my "to see" list which I think are similar - Shutter and The Echo.

Xtro  ???

:lol That also reminded me of It's Alive.  I might watch both again, haven't seen them since I was a kid.

:bow Swedish and US versions are both awesome.

Session 9 is very enjoyable, and creepy.

There's a remake of it, called Sucker Punch, where the main character is replaced by a set of hot chicks, and the mental institution is a dragon.

More similar to Session 9, in what way? Suspenseful? Not gory?

So far, this october:

Paranormal Activity 3: BY FAR the best one in the franchise. Takes the subtlety of the first film, throws in some of the jump scares of the second, and improves over both. I love the 80's setting (and also willfully ignored the fact I am watching VHS tapes in crystal clear Digital Projection). The characters are more likable, the ending, while predictable, is very, very well done, and the film just has this building tension to it that Paranormal Activity 2 lacked by having the ghost do crazy shit way too early in the film. AWESOMENESS and a definite for a fan of the first movie in the series.

Funhouse (dir. by Tobe Hooper of Texas Chain Saw Massacre fame): A big bunch of meh. Not that creepy.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
the villain is a inbred distinguished mentally-challenged guy in a Frankenstein mask. His first kill is (no joke) him killing the big titted psychic at a carnival after she had just jerked him off.
[close]

Friday the 13th (the original, just rewatched it for the first time in several years): Not as clever as slasher films before or after it. I guess the appeal is that it was Jason's middle-aged mother carving up the camp, but still, nothing overly creepy and LOTS of bad acting.  Of course, it then spawned 10 sequels. I think I will stick to the original Halloween for a truly good slasher film.

I have finally tracked down a copy of Halloween III and I have several horror movies on Netflix still to watch, including a few directed by Michael Mann and a few directed by Guillermo Del Toro. I will probably check out Maniac Cop now that I know about that film.

Been trying to do a horror movie each night this month. Here's what I've done so far:

Rewatches:
Night of the Living Dead- original and 90s remake. tried to watch 3D remake but couldn't make it 20 min.
Company of Wolves
Nightmare on Elm Street 2 & 3 - 2 gets gayer everytime I see it. 3's weird to watch on BluRay since you can see all the strings for stunts and effects.
The Ruins
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Halloween I and II
Critters - Kill Crites!
Hellraiser Deader - Still shit after watching 9, but more tolerable shit.
Madman - Watching Madman Marz run around, growling like a bear is so adorable.
Basket Case 2 and 3
Friday the 13th I, II, III, V
House of the Devil - Always a good rewatch. I really need to find my copy of The Roost to watch again.
Evil Dead

First Time Watches:
Rare Exports - Decent but underdelivers. Becomes a kids' movie at the end.
The Woman - Loved it. Makes a great companion piece to May.
Rubber - Not really what I expected. But then again, I didn't know what to expect from a killer tire movie.
Hitch-Hike - Wanted to watch this after David Hess died. Probably my favorite thing he's been in now.
Hellraiser 9: Revelations - Utter shit.  :poop
Howling Reborn- Combine Twilight, Spiderman and a tiny dash of Howling and this is what you get. At least the werewolves weren't CG.
The Burning - I cannot believe I haven't seen this until now. This,  Friday the 13th, and Sleepaway Camp will make a nice triple feature one day.
Creature - Fun little Alien ripoff with Klaus Kinski
Wrong Turn 4 - Honestly... I had a lot of fun with this. The prequel aspect feels forced but it plays the camp factor right.
Dread - Pretty good adaptation of the Clive Barker short. I'm surprised at how under the radar this film became.
Race Against the Devil - Great killer cult movie with a badass Mad Max style roadchase at the end. Ending was a big WTF?
Vampire Girl vs Frankenstein Girl - Crazy Japanese gorefest.

What's left this month:
Night of the Demons
Trick or Treat
Then partying for the last two nights!

Ti West's new movie is fucking amazing.

Better than House of the Devil by miles.  Better characters, better story, better pacing (more stuff happens but it's still a really slow burn film) and the ending is a huge fucking downer.

they gave us all keychains from the haunted hotel.  I thought that was a neat promo gimmick.

edit: and i think i just found it....

2 was pretty bad up until the last quarter where it goes so over the top that it was almost worth slogging through the rest of the movie for. I still haven't seen 3, which is strange because I have somewhat of a weakness for bad horror sequels (I'll probably end up watching it pretty soon now). 4 interested me mainly due to the cheesy setup of inbred cannibals in an insane asylum during a snowstorm. If you can get past the awful first 20 minutes it becomes one of those stupid fun horrors that you can easily turn your brain off to.

Ti West's new movie is fucking amazing.

You lucky bastard.

So basically Eric P is a guy who

- Goes to every live music event in his city
- Watches every movie ever
- Listens to every album ever

That's pretty cool. I should do more of those things.

I miss so much stuff. :\

Currently watching the blu ray release of Lucio Fulci's The House by the Cemetery.  lol @ dubbing.

No Way To Treat A Lady.  I can't decide if this is a boost to gay rights in the 70s or horrifically homophobic.  Fun little thriller.

Added a new horror to my list this month:

Offspring (2008) - Prequel to Lucky McKee's The Woman.  Really low budget (it was shot on digital video) with some incredibly bland characters and one slightly bad child actor (who thankfully isn't onscreen all that much).  Story-wise it's about a  family that is attacked by a by a group of wild feral kids along with The Woman as their leader (played by the same actress).  It doesn't  get much deeper than that. It's pretty high on the gore factor.  The effects are very well done and quite disgusting at times with lots cannibally goodness. I did like how the attacks from the feral kids come out of nowhere and  that characters can die on the fly.  It can also be a little ballsy and mean spirited at times by not reframing from killing a kid or baby every once and a while. The film not nearly as good as The Woman film and is not required to watch before seeing it.  It's not a terrible watch if you're curious, can stomach its low budgetness, and are absolutely starved for a horror you probably haven't seen.

Have you read the Ketchum books that make up Off Season / Off Spring etc?  I'd read the books, but not seen the movies.  The books were really really nasty little things.

I watched What Have You Done to Solange?, an excellent Gaillo.  A Teacher is having an affair with a student.  While they are together, the student sees a murder but not the murderer.  In order to keep their affair a secret, neither speaks about the crime, but the teacher becomes the primary suspect who must clear his name, etc etc etc.  The plot isn't great, but everything around is really good.  The acting, the characters, the central conceit which makes up the mystery (though the villain reveal and motivation was pretty goofy and ultimately shallow).  Lots of nudity, not much (any?) gore, good sound track, and again, good acting from everyone.  If you're a fan of gaillo and haven't seen this one, don't miss it. If you have no idea what gaillo is, you could do worse than to start with this film.

I haven't had a chance to read them yet. I actually didn't know about the books until I started doing some research on the series. I'll probably swing the bookstore before work tomorrow and see if they have a copy of Off Season.

I've only read Red, by Ketchum. That, and a couple other short stories which may have been part of the same book. I liked them; they were unsettling, in that they seem all too believable. The Girl Next Door is largely based on a true story which is just insanely horrific. Can either of you recommend other Ketchum books which you enjoyed, or any I should particularly avoid?

I just watched the first Paranormal Activity movie. I've never seen any of them before. I'm a pretty big horror fan and I just felt like I got trolled. Why the hell was that movie such a big deal. I thought it was laughably bad in places and mostly just boring and mediocre in others. Not trying to diss anybody but somebody who liked it explain to me why you like it. I'm honestly baffled.

It was more overblown than The Blair Witch Project, which was pretty overblown but still very fresh and original feeling. PA was exciting in a few scenes, and the parts where the spiritual expert shows up and won't even enter the house, as well as the crap where the boyfriend is actively taunting the spirit were both pretty effective in increasing tension. It wasn't perfect by any means, but I liked it for the things it did right.
