from co-founder Brian Martel, who then made his case by comparing Duke Nukem Forever (2011), to Half-Life (1998)
lulz here
Speaking to Eurogamer in a previously unpublished interview conducted at Gamescom in August, Martel reflected on the controversial shooter's critical reception, stating: "We wish the reviews were a little less caustic. We're not quite sure where some of the anger came from."
Asked if that meant he didn't think, broadly speaking, that the game was reviewed fairly, he replied: "I think that if we were going to review the reviews fairly, no." He suggested that part of the problem was that "a certain amount of gamers today are not used to" a game in the style of Duke Nuke Forever. "It was what it was meant to be, which is a more old-school style game in what is today's technology".
To emphasise the point, Martel compared the game to classic Valve FPS Half-Life. "We've had this internal debate," he revealed. "Would Half-Life today be reviewed as highly as it is, you know, even today? As a new IP coming out with the same sort of mechanics Half-Life had.
"I think we all have a nostalgia and love for that particular brand. Obviously Gearbox got its start working on Opposing Force so we love Half-Life. But is the current gamer, would they have the same love for that? It'd be interesting. I think the same kind of thing happened with Duke."

WOULD CURRENT GAMERS LIKE HALF-LIFE AS MUCH NOW? I'M NOT SURE
WOULD CURRENT HAIR STYLISTS LIKE 80's MULLETS AS MUCH NOW? I'M NOT SURE

This controversy is about as exciting as the game was :zzz
-
Also, why is that the "zzz" icon? What part of that signals someone sleeping because of boredom? The guy is happy and smiling with a pimp fro.
-
...he's not sleeping...
-
But "zzz" indicates snoring because something is so dull it put you to sleep mid-sentence.
-
it means he's "relaxed," brah

Any time a game is updated from a previous incarnation, invariably there are going to be comparisons made. It's inherent. However, those expectations can be mapped to a continuum.
On one end, purists who just want to see the original game on their current console, with no improvements. On the other, people who are expecting a completely updated game, with all the amenities and contrivances of other new games. Most of the people cheering for the game at announcement are likely of the former category, or perhaps are wishing for updated graphics and internet-enabled multiplayer.
The truth is, in order to be considered a success in today's market, the current, mainstream audiences must be successfully engaged, and the original buyers are either not in that set, or are only a very minor subset of that target group. The FPS market has evolved so much in the intervening time, even in the limited sense of singleplayer campaigns, that the latter point on the continuum must be targeted. Nostalgia can only serve so far.
tl;dr version: Yeah, Half-Life would flop, if placed against current competition. But the current titles are only here because of Half-Life's past success.

What does Kristy remind you of?
-
A certain Herman Melville novel?
-
Cthulhu? Barry Humphries?
DNF satisfied neither purists, nor 'current gamers', because it was a terrible game.
DNF's best bit was the janky, first-person platforming section. In any other game, that section would be an affront to the notion decent gameplay. In DNF, it's the best level.

Is this real?
I've been using zzz for years to signify boredom. Don't tell me I've been using the wrong emoticon forever!
-
So, he's basically admitting that his game came out more than a decade after it stopped being relevant to modern gaming? Sounds about right.

Cthulhu? Barry Humphries?
No, a whale, sillies.

:lol
I gotta admit, my eyes weren't scanning for such a detour, but I like it.
And now I feel dumb :(
-
If it had been a Nabokov reference, I could have got Kosma and Fistful in one swoop!
-
If they had sold the game for a reduced price. Like $40 dollars or something, I think the review tone also would have improved. I mean it still wouldn't have gotten good reviews but it would have seemed like less of a greedy cash grab.

The three different SKUs of this have an average score of 51 on metacritic, sounds fair to me. :poop

80s mullets were amazing for their time. Of course they look less impressive to modern eyes thanks to 30 years of advancements in hairstyle technology, but much like Steve Jobs and Dennis Ritchie, the "magical" hairstyles of today could've never come about without standing on their forebears' giant shoulders. Or scalps, or something.
