For someone who didn't play Oblivion and was really bored by Morrowind's "practice picking locks for three days, it's REALISTIC!" gameplay do you dudes think I would like this? Every time there's an Elder Scrolls game I really want to enjoy it but every time it just ends up feeling like more of a chore than a game. :-/
:-\ Like, I really want to like these games but I refuse to pretend that this sort of gameplay is good or even acceptable.

What's the leveling system like in this one? Do enemies scale?
Why hasn't there been a fucking trailer for this aside from the initial ones?

Ugh I hate that fucking controller. Might be PC for me then. I have a GTX 250, you think that might suffice?
Apparently ps3 version looks way better than 360?
Well yeah, but shonuff asked whether he should console or pc and I just wanted to put that note in there. Also, 360 version has a bug if you install to hd. If you have the means and capabilities, I'd go for pc version.

Game makes my peepee hard. Not sure what system I am buying this motherfucker on though. Do I go for 360 version on my big screen TV or do I go PC for better graphicses and nude mods?
Here's to hoping, next gen, they really rework the combat. Hearing that the combat has a little more weight to it in Skyrim but nothing radical. This needs to change.

It does actually have some kill animations, which is kind of cool.

if you install to hd, it overwrites the hd textures. if you play from disc you're good.

I'm not understanding. Is there 2 discs, like BF3?
radeon hd 5770 should handle this easily right?
Phoenix is this one of your "i have interest in this game" but you end up not playing things or are you really gonna join in? :o
I've been waiting for Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals. I'll most likely get an external one, and move my files there. Unless you can load a game from an external hd?

PC version supports 360 pad right? Surely that has to be better than K&M?
Also is there somewhere non spoilery I can read about character races/traits so I can think about my character now?

Watch the video at around 1:13. That's with the installation.
allegedly the 360 controller stuff on PC is great. Icon/buttons change to those of the 360 controller and all that.
I still want to know how it plays with kb/m
The PC version... uses the exact same interface, but it actually works quite well with a mouse and keyboard. That's mainly because that four-way menu and the list of items and spells are all easily navigable with WASD, and even when you want to equip a highlighted item, you only need to click the mouse button you want to map it to, regardless of where the cursor is.
Shit on my dick, with install ps3 still looks better...dammit I hate the Dual Shock
GTX 250, beneath minimum spec :(
Just wait a few months, someone will eventually release a high-resolution texture mod for Skyrim.
Just wait a few months, someone will eventually release a high-resolution texture mod for Skyrim.
not before the naked weaboo Sephiroth motorcyle mod
The minimum PC requirements, as tweeted by Bethesda's Pete Hines:
* Dual-core CPU, 2.0 GHz or faster
* 2 GB RAM
* DirectX 9.0c video card with 512 MB RAM
* 6 GB HDD space
* Windows XP/Vista/7 [32 or 64-bit]
* Internet access for Steam activation
And the recommended spec:
* Quad-core CPU
* 4 GB RAM
* DirectX 9.0c video card with 1 GB RAM - GTX 260/Radeon 4890 or higher
* 6 GB HDD space
* Windows XP/Vista/7, internet access, etc.
PC is the way to go, as always. I've been watching Kasavin too, he's busy killing walruseseses. Walrii? Something.
And the influence of the recent Fallout games on this iteration of TES is readily apparent and fully welcomed by me. Can't wait to start beating shit to death later tonight.

Still a fair amount of annoying Bethesda shit. Went through first dungeon, got up to a Draughr Overlord but couldn't loot it once killed, I just thought it was a bug. Later on we got a quest to recover a Dragonstone and had to trek back to the same dungeon, the corpse, which was now magically lootable, contained the Dragonstone >:(
Quoteyou need the official controller adapter though (unless things have changed...i've been using one since last year)
you still need it for wireless - for X360 wired pads they work fine with PC as is.
it's one of those crazy things: the PC x360 style pads don't work on the X360, but a stock wired X360 pad works on a PC. *baffle*

as nice as the new GUI is, which it is great, the lack of quick mapping actually ruins the game in a lot of ways. nothing like getting pulled out of the fight by going through this menu to pick this thing i wanted to do once
Found a good bug, or more a design oversight.... When you get to Riverwood at the bar or somewhere you talk to Sven who wants you to give a fake note to this woman from a guy Faedarn. Rat out Sven then chat to Faedarn and he becomes your companion, you can take stuff from his inventory when he's your companion, he also trains you in Archery for $. So you can pay him to train you then take your money back from his inventory and keep training up to 50 Archery :lol
I really didn't like Oblivion when I played it and quickly gave up playing but this has me hooked completely. I'm finding it kinda hard to acquire decent one-handed weapons so Ive been using a two-handed axe and switching to magic + weapon when need be. Wish there was a way to quickly swap between my axe and magic+mace instead of going though the item menu. No big deal but it'd be nice.
The skills menu is kinda freaking me out. There's quite a bit going on there and the interface is pretty crazy.
What did you guys name yours characters?
Also, iron/metal armor weighs you down, right? So as a ranger/assassin, I should stick to fur armor?

Just picked this up from the big K, got another $15 gaming coupon. Mine came with a nice map on parchment-style paper.Mine too. I got mine from Wal Mart (had a gift card). A lot of Wal Marts around here didn't get shipments of it. Funny observation though. This other guy was buying Skyrim too at the entertainment section. When he checked out he had a box of laxatives to go with it. A long weekend with nachos, pizza, grilled cheese sandwiches and gaming it up? I think so.
"Skyrim uses a lot of dynamic streaming systems, including textures. We’ve seen a few reports of certain textures temporarily scaling down on the Xbox 360, and not scaling back up. We have verified that this issue does not occur when playing off the disk and when the game is fully cached (not installed). Skyrim makes heavy use of the Xbox 360 caching system, and caches over the normal course of play while in menus or interiors. This cache can be wiped when other games are played or when the user manually removes it. We’re working on a solution in the next title update for those who have installed the game. "
I loved Oblivion, but I'd still agree with that. Skyrim just does everything that Oblivion did but WAY BETTER.

This game feels like a Fallout 3 total conversion mod.

does kmart have the PC version w/ $15 coupon?
So, I just found out that enemies level up with you. Not interested in the game anymore.
“You’ll still run into the weaker stuff and you’ll just decimate it.”
LEVEL SCALING
Level scaling in Skyrim is based on the system in Fallout 3.
The number one most important thing is this, creatures do NOT scale up in terms of abilities to match YOUR level.
Meaning each Mountain Giant you encounter in Skyrim will have the same attributes regardless of your own attributes when you encounter them.
In Fallout 3, each territory in the game was assigned an encounter level that determines the level and equipment of the creatures when you discover that specific area.
This means that when you're at Lv1 and wander into a Lv5 encounter territory, you're in for a fight.
Loot is in general also scaled to the territory's encounter level, but some items were hand-placed like in The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.
The areas, or territories level do not remain static as you level up yourself, however, as soon as you enter an area or territory, its level will be locked and will NOT scale up in difficulty as you do.
As previously mentioned, undiscovered areas and territories will level up in difficulty, but it won't be to specifically match YOUR level.
So say when you begin the game, an area that is designated a Lv5 encounter level will become, say a Lv8 encounter level when you're at Lv15 yourself.
Something a lot of people have said they want to see is the possibility to enter an area that is absolutely WAY too difficult for you to handle, then return at a later level with better equipment and stats and just cleaning house, this scaling system allows that 100%, as when you entered that dungeon with those difficult enemies, it was locked to those, and will not change as you level up.
Those minotaurs you saw in there will remain when you return in 10 levels, and they wont have gone up in stats.
I really don't like how they've dealt with attributes. Where's my Agility, Strength etc? :'( If I'm a melee/bow using character does Stamina increase my damage output, or does it only affect my stamina pool and equip load?
Perks are cool. But a poor substitute for a more transparent stats system. I hate how they've just 'fixed' it by burying it. Bad Bethesda.
How is the combat? It looks rather glitchy/shitty from the videos I've seen :-\

So far I've come across the Companions, the Imperial Legion, and that Nord rebel group. Haven't joined any of them yet.
I did and man, it's awesome. I was hoarding books and a shit ton of alchemy ingredients, and being able to dump that shit off in my house is pretty sweet. Plus I was holding the bones and scales of my first dragon kill and those fuckers are heavy.
where are the cheap starter houses at then
Game world is huge and awesome. Killed my 2nd dragon just randomly wandering around. It's weird that I'm more scared of Giants than Dragons at this point, but those fuckers can one shot you.
I have yet to have one freeze on 360.
Consider that Third will be getting the game on ps3, which is always the most buggy version of these games.
You should really only focus on archery if you're coupling it with snearkery, otherwise you're at a bit of a disadvantage against groups of enemies.
Anyway, finally found my first Dwemer ruin, so glad they brought these back for Skyrim.
reading this thread makes me want to impulse buy this :-\
must wait until December
This game renders Oblivion obsolete. There's seriously no reason for t to even exist anymore.
quick switch (hold left or right on items you want and in mid-battle press left or right to equip mid-battle with no pause).
Where's the loot? I'm still using the same orcish mase and steel shield I got in the firsts dungeon. `8 hours in killed my first named dragon.
Quick Switch isn't on the PC version with 360 pad :piss
Yeah, what the fuck is with this?
So goddamn annoying.
edit: also, dragons are bitches. would be nice if they were actually difficult to fight. maybe they are later on but i've killed 4 so far and they've all been pretty easy.

instant overencumberment should have been fixed about 100 RPGs ago. Why not make it a gradual decrease of speed after you top 100% or something
whoever said Oblivion has been rendered useless for all eternity is correct. I don't know how the map compares but it feels bigger.
Reasonably happy with high settings and FXAA on my 5850. I think I need to mess around with some of the draw distances though, getting ~40fps outside if there's a lot going on. Also get drop to around 30fps if there's some sort of smoke or particle effects going on - the first major town with some fire causes problems :(
The issue only seems to manifest if you have the Xbox 360 version of Skyrim installed to the hard drive - a process that is entirely optional. In this case, the highest resolution versions of the textures appear to stall and not load, meaning that you're definitely not seeing the game at its best. If you remove the install, and run the game directly from the DVD, the best quality artwork returns to the game.
Typically, an alternative install solution for Xbox 360 owners is to copy the game over onto a USB flash drive. Bethesda talks about the game extensively using the HDD's cache, so we thought that there was an outside possibility that this could be a bandwidth issue - an HDD install accessing the HDD cache, actually leading to a lowering of response time. This is something we've previously seen with Halo 3, which actually loads faster installed to a USB device.
Unfortunately, in our testing the USB install was ignored completely with the game relying on the disc and hard drive instead. Only when we removed the HDD totally was the USB install utilised - and that crashed within 15 minutes of play time. Perhaps that's something that should be investigated when the game is inevitably patched, in addition to sorting out the headline bug.
Bethesda staff initially denied that there was an issue, with VP or Marketing and PR Peter Hines tweeting to a customer, "I don't know what texture glitches you are talking about. Game runs same off disc vs. HDD. We don't see any differences."
However, the official forum was later updated with this post:
"Skyrim uses a lot of dynamic streaming systems, including textures. We've seen a few reports of certain textures temporarily scaling down on the Xbox 360, and not scaling back up. Not touching this until they fix their broken game :maf
Since everyone feels compelled to keep saying how much they hated Oblivion I'm just gonna repeat how much I liked it.
So, is there a place where I can buy a shit load of empty soul gems? I just realized from watching the GB quicklook that my mace requires souls but I only have a few gems.

Alright, I have a pretty bitchin fire bow now. 33 base damage, 18 fire damage. :drool
I have so much ebony ore now it's crazy. Too bad I need 60 in smelting before I can use any of it.
I really wish the Companions were called something else. Whenever they say it in game, all I can think about is Mr. Show

Morrowind had fucking tiiight loot, it was Oblivion that ruined the name of TES forever in that respect too.
in Morrowind you can get a crescent sword by going to another dimension of existence and killing a daedric prince. you enter this world by putting on a ring, and bam! and floating boots! Umbra! Umbraaaa!

Go to the orphanage in Riften and talk to the kids, they'll mention one kid who ran away and talked about joining the Dark Brotherhood. I haven't gotten to where this kid is yet, but I'm pretty sure that's what will get you started.
How am I going to tear myself away from this to play Saints Row? :(
without Lydia i would surely have not made it out a lot of situations a live. especially the dungeons with a shit ton of vampires.
So can you be a member of multiple groups? Like the Companions and the Dark Brotherhood?
I'm still trying to work out the stealth indicator, it's been changed slightly enough but enough that it confuses me.

Let's talk about the seemingly random crap we've seen in the game that holds no value to the gameplay but adds to the game's world:
I was adventuring on the eastern portion of the map and encountered a hot spring. I found a hunter camp. No one was there, but I found portion of hunter clothes, armor and weapons upon the grass. I looked in the hot springs and the hunters were in their middle aged bikini briefs and tops just chillin' and getting some sun.
Amazing.
WELL WHAT THE FUCK.
I haven't done any Thieves Guild quests because the first one involves stealth and pickpocketing, and my burly Nord dude in heavy armor has to be terrible at that.
Meh- the game is way more fun to fuck around in than OBLIVIOBORING. If I want a game with good characters Ill play something Bioware made like 10 years ago.

yeah but imagine fucking around in Skyrim accompanied by say, Minsc
have to say though - the characters are still really short on CHARACTER. Nobody so far is in any way memorable. One day Bioware and Bethesda will fuse into Biothesda and all will be right with the world.
Tons of people playing this on my friends list. It's the only game close to MW 3 in that regard and at times more people are playing it than MW 3. Way more than Batman was for instance. I'm curious how the sales turn out.

Riften is rancid dogshit so far, loaded with fedex quests that i have zero interest in, pretty sure the layout is directly lifted from bravil in oblivion.
The thieves guild is a joke, as soon as you walk through the gates you're hit over the head with it. And when you get down there (10 minutes later) you're met with a load of scowling tough guy distinguished mentally-challenged fellows wearing the official thieves guild uniform. Full on bethesderp, think i'll move on from this town so it doesn't poison the rest of the game for me.

Modern Warfare 3's unassailable lead meant RPG Goliath Skyrim settled for a second-place debut. But what a second-place; Skyrim had the fifth biggest opening week of the year (after Modern Warfare 3, FIFA 12, Battlefield 3 and only just behind Gears of War 3). Also, Skyrim more than doubled the opening week tally of Fallout: New Vegas, making it Bethesda's fastest selling game ever.
Xbox 360 claimed a huge retail majority of Skyrim sales, with 59 per cent. Only 26 per cent of shop-bought Skyrim copies were on PS3, and 15 per cent were on PC (digital sales aren't counted).
The launch of two huge titles, plus a chart filled with numerous blockbusters, meant this week was the biggest ever for UK video games. Total take for the week was £120.8 million (you can see how much Modern Warfare 3 dominated).

Where's the loot? I'm still using the same orcish mase and steel shield I got in the firsts dungeon. `8 hours in killed my first named dragon.
Go to Markarth. After some people get shived, walk around a bit and you'll find a guy asking about a house (he'll ask you about it). Do this quest line and you'll get a sick mace.

Yep. I think they really made gigantic strides with the leveling system. Instead of conforming to some template you create you're able to turn into the character you instinctively play as. I think this is the ultimate form of whatever leveling system they initially wanted to implement.
I wish this game had a tone more Fallout New Vegas style. The quests that are hilarious are funny and more fun then super serious land. The dog quests :bow
I guess I just don't like Bethesda's own games on their own. Oblivion was meh, Fallout 3 was garbage. It's when other developers make their games for them it shines. :bow New Vegas :bow
...which has nothing to do w/ you slagging one of the best games of the past 5 years because you got scared of the subways. (@mehtodis, obv)
What elf dude? What are you talking about? The mission I did after that threaten quest you mentioned was the one where you burn some bee hive farm.
so this game is better than oblivion right
cause I was bored to tears with oblivion. I loved morrowind, loved fallout 3 and new vegas...will I like this one? It's on my christmas list.
To be fair, there's no Capt. Picard voice acting but other than that it's a clear improvement all the way around.
I'm sorry I enjoy games to know their childrens entertainment products and not deep mystical theological explorations into the mystery of the vast nordic north. ~~

Skyrim: The Digital Foundry Verdict
So to round up, this is a valiant overall effort by Bethesda at delivering a bewilderingly huge fantasy game to three platforms, each of varying technical strengths and weaknesses. But, despite their best and most well-meaning efforts at achieving parity on both consoles, we can confirm that the 360 does command a clear advantage over the PS3 when it comes to both image quality and performance. Even with the PS3's mandatory install, the geometry pop-in in certain areas is more distracting than it is on Microsoft's platform, and the light blur introduced by its post-processing tends to affect the clarity of the image as a whole.
For those lucky enough to be multi-platform owners, the 360 version also comes recommended for its more stable frame-rate. With that being said, they're both perfectly acceptable taken on their own terms, and the core of Skyrim's complex open-world design remains entirely intact on each. However, the save game issue on PS3 remains a concern and we'll continue to carry on playing there in order to see if its manifestation necessitates a blog update.
Speaking of controller response, it's worth mentioning that players of the PS3 version are reporting an increase in controller latency once save files reach a certain size (the established estimate being 5.5MB). This also proved to be an issue in previous Bethesda titles for the console, harking all the way back to the days of Oblivion, which makes it all the more surprising a patch hasn't come to save the day yet.
Why is that on my birth sign skills screen overview, it says 40 next to heavy armor, but when I go into heavy aror it says 28? For all other skills the headline number is the same as the one within.

Do you have something boosting your heavy armor stat? If the number is green, that means it's being temporarily boosted, but upgrades still rely on your base stat.
fyi, i dunno about the other companions you can take with you, but lydia can open any lock as long as picks are in her inventory, even master level locks

Discovered in a neat little feature:
If you commit a crime and someone witnesses it, you immediately receive a bounty for your capture. But, if you kill the witness, the bounty is wiped away. It only works if the guards haven't be alerted yet, of course.
I enchanted her fucking sword she better be happy
I've never felt less ripped off paying full price for a game.
i never would have though that in 2011 my top three games would all be RPGs. my gaming taste has changed quite a bit.

But I like the empire. The Stormcloaks are stupid lizard-haters and I'm Argonian.

Get a meat shield! Their sacrifice will be fondly remembered...
Also, craft some resist elec potions, armor, etc
apparently if you hold a torch (has to be a torch) up to a lock... it makes the lock easier to pick....
regarding Lydia picking locks. I tried it earlier and she told me she couldn't do that.
also i'm just the opposite in regard to money. i have tons of money.
Who the fuck is Alain Dufont, and why would I have already killed him?

That's how I play Elder Scrolls (& Fallout 3/NV). Stock up on every quest in a town, move to the next town, get more quests. Maybe one day I'll complete some of the quests.
yeah battles here are a lot more challenging and fun. you have to really utilize everything you have and have trained, i love it. the troll on the 7,000 steps was super hard, and i had to do all sorts of different things before i finally killed him.
Superb fantasy role-playing game Skyrim sold over 3.5 million units in 48 hours, Bethesda has revealed.
Bethesda expects Skyrim launch units to generate over $450 million in global retail sales. By comparison, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 made $400 million in one day, and sold over 6.5 million units in the US and UK alone.
Bethesda shipped seven million units of Skyrim for launch. More than 50 per cent of launch units were sold in the first 48 hours, which means Skyrim sold over 3.5 million units in that period.
Skyrim set a record for concurrent players on Steam - a whopping 280,000 played in the first 24 hours of release.
"We are grateful for the fans' response to Skyrim," said Robert Altman, Chairman and CEO of ZeniMax Media.
"Todd Howard and his team at Bethesda Game Studios have crafted a very special game. Anticipation forSkyrim has surpassed any game in our company's history, and we are pleased that sales and reviews have reflected the quality and hours of amazing gameplay it provides."
"Without a doubt, this has been our most ambitious project ever," said Todd Howard, Game Director on Skyrim. "After over three years of development, we're finally excited to get it into everyone's hands."
Oblivion, which launched in March 2006 - only a few months after the Xbox 360 - shipped 1.7 million copies. Fallout 3 shipped 4.7 million for launch in October 2008, which amounted to a potential $300 million dollars in revenue. Fallout: New Vegas, which launched in October 2010, shipped 5 million units and generated over $300 million.

I like the way factions are handled in Skyrim, you never get the feeling that either the Empire or the Stormcloaks are ever "evil" they're just groups that are both looking out for their own interests. And then there's the Foresworn, they're not a major player but they still play a role in the game and just help to flesh out the overall experience.
Haven't finished the Dark Brotherhood questline, but it looks like they're going to play a major role in the events of the game as well.
I haven't joined either the Stormcloaks or the Empire, because both seem in the wrong (and also the right).
i'm starting to try and kill every furry i encounter, like i did in oblivion. thankfully, they don't let furries into the cities, so they're easy to take out.
mage boss is nuking me. i ALMOST had him glitched behind a gate, but the motherfucker found a ledge that took him over a wall and he blasted me. oi, the tension...
Morokei is easy as fuck. Stand behind pillars and take potshots at him. He never get's up on you, which makes it super easy to dodge his OP lightning and if you have the shout of time, it's even easier.
The item you get after beating him is so cash.

I seem to be one of the few that doesn't go out of his way to slaughter anyone who isn't trying to slaughter ME in these games. I don't even hunt animals unless they're trying to kill me. It's mostly because I'm anal and I worry they'll be tied to a quest. Near Solitude there was a rich asshole and his wife and guard on the way to the princesses wedding and I wanted to kill him so bad but then my mind flashes and I'm like WHAT IF HE'S PART OF A LATER QUEST and put my bow down.
I don't know if this is causing your problem or not, but just remember that to get a quest marker for a miscellaneous quest, you have to check Miscellaneous AND the sub-quest you want marked. That caused me some problems at first because I was checking the sub-quest, but I didn't have Miscellaneous checked so the marker wasn't showing up.
I can't bring myself to kill Lydia. She annoys me to no end but I can't just slaughter her like I really want to.
I rarely kill random people in games like this mainly because quests are often attached to them and by killing them I'm losing out on game content. A game has to be really designed in a smart manner before I start playing it "evil" because most games still simply punish the evil route by simply removing game content.

pussies! i light up ANYONE that even MILDLY peeves me. i am like a petty, angry little godling. i kill catpeople because i can. i killed an entire tavern and paid off the guards because why not. i trashed dawnstar and broke quest chains because, eh, it was tuesday.
Where is the person you can pay to rank up in smithing?
Someone explain weapon crafting and potion crafting. I never do it in these sorts of games but I'd like to give it a try.
Stupid noob question: How do hybrid-type builds tend to work in these games? I initially went orc and was dumping points into heavy armor and two-hand weapons, but after a few hours I was already bored. I rerolled dark elf, and I want to do something like use a dagger in my mainhand for sneak attacks and destruction magic in my offhand unless I'm going to get whomped by everything I fight
Someone explain weapon crafting and potion crafting. I never do it in these sorts of games but I'd like to give it a try.
like in regard to what exactly?
it's fairly simple. if you have the ingredients you select what you want to make and it gets made.
i make a lot of iron stuff and i need a few leather straps and some iron ingots. the leather straps are made by first turning pelts into leather, then leather into leather straps.
the iron ingots are made by smelting iron ore into ingots.
you can also make stuff that just uses leather as well so sometimes you wont want to turn the leather into strips.
i imagine it's similar to potions but i don't make those.

Does ranking up smithing do anything if you aren't also spending on its perks?
Thanks.
So far I have spent perks on one handed, destruction, restoration, heavy armor, and one in speech and smithing. Am I spread too thin if I go further into smithing? Should I go left (elven) or right (dwarves)? I am using a sky forge steel sword from the early mission.
That site seems to indicate that I can just grind out my level and maybe use some stat boosters to make up for a lack of perks. I shot up tp level 45 using daggers and now I can make an exquisite sword.
Also the Dark Brotherhood sent an assassin after me with a note that says that someone wants me dead, wondering if this happens to everyone or just random playthroughs. Either way this could get interesting.
Also can I crossbreed? The idea of being a vamp werewolf is too awesome!
Not too late to switch platforms, 360 guys.

Man, Smithing is extremely easy to level if you've got the gold. I was able to go from level 20? To like 35 with just two vendors (buying Iron Ingots and Leather Strips). And all together the resources just cost around 1.5K Gold. It also seems like a worthy skill considering the bump in attack damage you get from sharpening weapons.

i like how every faction is kind of a bunch of fucking assholes, so i don't feel bad for unleashing the five fingers of hellish torment on any of them

I think, even then there are some enemies that are still ridonculous. I can kill a lot of shit easily now but Ancient Dragons fuck me up if I don't have cover nearby.
As far as Enchanting goes 1 Second of Soul Catch with a Grand Soul will give you 2000 hits. Get a lot of petty gems and start killing smaller wild life. You'll level up enchanting quickly.

Can I replace an enchantment on a weapon?
How do I cure vampirism? I don't sparkle in the daylight. :'(
so yeah, the molag bal mace is the most powerful weapon I have. i have it upgraded to Flawless and it does 67 base damage with 31 of magic damage.
god tier weapon.
Is this game worth getting on 360?It's fine imo
Where do I get that weapon
Is this game worth getting on 360?
I've been using the Molag Bal mace for quite awhile now, I mean like over the last 35 hours or so. I haven't found anything worth swapping it out for. The thing is ridiculously powerful, which seems kind of strange seeing how early you can get it and how little you have to do to earn it. I'll occasionally break out the Dawn Breaker if I'm going into a dungeon crawling with Draugr but for the most part I'm just a daedric mace swinging motherfucker.
Nearly 60 hours in and I'm still receiving a ton of quests......this shit doesn't stop
ATTENTION ALL SKYRIM PLAYERS, READ THIS POST
I've played Skyrim for 50+ hours, I've found tons of loot, fought all kinds of monsters, and been to nearly every corner of the country, so I'm feeling a bit arrogant. I've seen it all, the game just can't surprise me anymore. Dungeon variation is still nice and well-appreciated, but I've seen the different kinds. I'm feeling cocky. I was wrong.
While searching in the far north along the patch of frigid ocean near Winterhold, I found a ladder leading down to a hole in the ice, occupied by a madman. In exchange for helping him out, he agreed to find for me a particular item of great worth. I jumped at the opportunity for more questing, as is my want. He sent me to a dwarven ruin, jutting up from out a glacier. I found the sad remnants of a doomed band of adventures, having met their untimely end when the glacier closed around them. Madness took some, the Falmer took the rest. I ventured deep, past hordes of Falmer and the lifeless automatons of a dead civilization. I ventured very deep. Then I came at last to the end. The last two remaining members of the band of adventures appeared, arguing over whether to continue or to flee back to the surface in a conveniently-placed lift. Their argument came to blows, I killed both. The madman had told me to venture into depths of the world, and then go beyond even that. So I did.
At last I found it...Blackreach. My jaw hit the floor.
Two hours later, I'm still there.
PC Skyrim has been patched, and the RAM-boosting, crash-preventing, third-party Large Address Aware (LAA) mode outlawed.
PC Skyrim, following the 18MB patch, now runs only through Steam. The LAA mode, which required some executable-file manipulation, no longer works.
The problem being that the LAA mode enabled PCs to use more than 2GB RAM, which not only helped stability, but boosted performance of the core game and the numerous mods applied on top.
The ball's in Bethesda's court.

Just made a high as possible without doing tedious back and Forth Enchanting / Potion Creation Alchemy enchantment on a set of gear. I have 4 pieces of gear with 28% increase in Alchemy ability which means I can make a fucking potion that heals me for 198 Health, a potion for One-Hand combat that'll raise the attack damage by 120%, a poison that'll paralyze someone for 24 seconds etc. I'm a fuckin' Alchemist God.

No, Interplay doing the Fallout MMO [they kept the licence for that when they sold the franchise to Bethesda], but shame on you if you think that's actually ever going to come out.

Nice. what level are you? I never hit the level cap in Fallout 3 and I did most quests, in this I'm already lvl 33, sitting at ~70 in Archery, Smithing, and Enchanting and ~50 with One Handed, Light Armor, Pickpocketing, Lockpicking, Illusion and Destruction. My main skills I've got perks in are Enchanting, Light Armor, One-Handed, Archery and Sneak with a few in Destruction and Smithing, the smithing perks are totally worth it and with the AI the way it is sneak attack bonuses rule, sneak in do the damage run away, hide, rinse and repeat :lol Definitely tedious though, I'm wielding elven war axes with fire enchantments atm. They seem to dish the damage pretty good and I just sprint in with a power attack or two to mess up 99% of things I encounter.
Gonna do the quest for Azuras Black Star next. Reusable Black Soul gem :drool
I never mess with alchemy or smithing. When and how can I get good shit for smithing? I only see the same options I did at the beginning of the game.

What's the best way to get your Enchanting up to 100?
When power leveling Enchanting I was also leveling SmithingsoI would make a bunch of Iron Daggers and then Enchant all of them with Health Absorb and a Petty gem. Part of the legwork with enchanting is getting enough Petty Soul Gem and spirits to fill them (so I would go outand massacre some wildlife). I would then start enchanting 50 or so Iron Daggers to really gain some levels with Enchanting.

So I can get things to Legendary no problem with my enchanted suit, but I'm reading that the perks don't just make it easier to get to Legendary, but they also improve the armor rating at Legendary. Know if that's true? I have no perk points in smithing because at this point I'm actually finding Daedric bows and Dragonscale armor in chests.
the only big side quest line i'm missing is the Dark Brotherhood. I did the quest in Windhelm and i have the message from the courier with the "WE KNOW" message and i know where the door is.
just need to figure out what the next step is.

regarding the 9th dragon priest mask. it's alright. it's the best in terms of armor and the perk is decent. i never get closed to death so it doesn't matter.
edit:
i installed 2 mods tonight as well. the better water mod and the one that forces the game to use 4gigs of memory. (it doesnt use more than 2 regardless of your system)
the latter is real good and makes the game run a lot better. in-doors i get locked 60fps. out doors i average 50-60fps depending on the situation, which is about a 15% increase from before.
the better water mod looks cool.
gonna try out the improve flora mod as well.

I just had a guy in Skyrim stop leading me to our quest so he could watch a lady in a bar sing an ENTIRE song. It cost him his life.
A follower's stats are determined based on the level the player is at when he or she first enters the zone that the follower is in. Once generated, the follower's stats do not increase at all. For example, Lydia is usually one of the first followers players will have access to, and most players receive her at a lower level. As such, most players' Lydias will have low stats for the entire game.
If you have an attachment to a certain follower and wish to continue to use him or her after he or she has become obsolete, you can update his or her stats by dismissing the companion, then opening the console, clicking the follower in question, typing "disable" and then typing "enable" without the quotation marks, then ask them to rejoin. The follower's inventory will remain unaffected, but his or her stats will all be updated to match the player's current level.
They should have had followers be invulnerable (just stagger around when near death and 0 HP) if the way they level is so janky

the zero punctuation review convinced me to hold off on this for a while. Just doesn't sound like it hits the right spots for me. Sounds like dark souls and demon's souls are my rpgs of choice this winter.

LOL, only Bethesda would make a patch that breaks their game. Guess I'm waiting to play Skyrim a little longer.

Anyone know if Alchemy lets you make better Smithing/Enchanting potions than the ones you find/buy? Best I got right now are +50 smithing and +25 enchanting potions.
Just made a Daedric bow that does 264 damage + 43 fire damage + 35 shock damage. It's super sexy. My sneak attacks will be super sexy.

Alchemy, Enchant and Smith are easily the most important skills in the game. Easily.

I realized just today is that there is no set number that corresponds to the item improvement ranks. So when you have a weapon all the way up to (Legendary), it can still vary between kinda-crappy-legendary and legendary-legendary. I've crafted a set of smithing bonus apparel (armor, bracers, ring I believe) and when I'm wearing it, I get better results than when I'm not, even though my base smithing stat is 100 and it already shows up as Legendary when I vanilla improve something. You can make crazy powerful things when you boost everything up with gear and potions.
The 100 enchanting perk is by far the best Master level perk in the game.

any suggestions for getting started on enchanting and smithing?

BT, how'd you get to 100 Alchemy? It's pretty rough to grind out without an ample supply of Giant's Toes I find.

I just kept on mixing shit throughout the game for money to put into training. Besides Giants Toes + Wheat the real workhorse combo's are reagents that make Slow, Paralyze, Damage Magicka Regain, Damage Stamina Regain and Invisibility. They don't give you the large single gold output of Giants Toe and Wheat but the reagents that make these potions are usually found from stores. One of the first things you want to max out though is the perk that reveals different properties of each ingredient so you can obviously make more of these sort of potions.

I had a weird encounter with a dragon. I got him down to half health and he started to take off and then started to do somersaults in the air and flew away drifted away. I could still see it in the distance going end over end. The framerate started to chug. I thought it was going to CTD, but as I got further away, it became fine again.
There is still only one place I can't beat yet. You have to re-forge and amulet. There are 3 ghosts and you fight them one at a time. I can beat the first, but the 2nd one has a force shout. I'll go back much later on.
Weird. Well, something happened in my game between 14 and 15 or so to make him vanish.
I've completed Shalidor's Insights, but when I go back to talk to Urag he just stands there and says something about Arcano. No other dialog box will come up. :mafI'm in a similar situation - well, two of them. Can't turn in two college side-thingies because the npcs seem preoccupied or something. Hopefully advancing the main college quest will fix it. Mother fucker I did not haul ten heavy ass dwemer cogs around a long ass dungeon for nothing :maf

I married Aela the Huntress today.
A courier came up to me today announcing that a recently deceased friend of mine had bequeathed me a sum of 300 gold.
It was from Lydia.
Her life savings: 300 gold. 270 after taxes. I was her sole heir.
I married Aela the Huntress today. For our honeymoon I took her to my house in Whiterun, where I had her kill Lydia as I looked on. Afterwards I equipped the Ring of Namira and feasted on Lydia's entrails. It was so romantic.
I love that I can wander around at level 25 and find things that can still 1-2-3 shot me. Came out of Winterhelm last night and found this abandoned house, a guy jumped out of the window and destroyed me with fire :(
i hope you're ok. we're here if you need to talk. i understand this might be a hard time for you right now.
I discovered something that bugs me with the first quest in the Dark Brotherhood quest line. (which I have to say is super cool already and my fav opening of any quest so far)spoiler (click to show/hide)So this chick asks you to kill one of the three people right? I saved the game to see what I could do.
First I killed her and got a quest to destroy the dark brotherhood.
Then I tried killing one or more people and got a quest to join the dark brotherhood.
Finally I though about killing one person, getting te quest to join the dark brotherhood AND THEN killing her. But this is impossible since she will become invinceble then and auto heal. LAME.[close]
Great quest though, but I can't decide what to do. Join or...
Is there a good anti-magic strategy for melee players? I'll one-shot every enemy in a dungeon, get to the boss and get lit up because he's running around dual casting lightning storm. I can deal with it if it's just one guy by pounding healing and resist potions, but of course, they're always surrounded by a bunch of other casters.
Start leveling Restoration for ward spells, I guess?
Depends on your approach.
Keep raising Health, get / enchant Magic Resist gear, drink magic resist potions, use resist spells. Alteration has a magic resist perk, Restoration has a "Life 3" Perk if you near-max it, etc. Block has some good Perks too, reducing elemental damage and letting you move full speed with a shield raised (plus shield is one of the things you can put Magic Resist on, and there are two different artifact shields with unique magic blocking).
I considered a shield with the perk, but since I went two-handed, I'd rather not carry around the extra equipment. With high Alchemy and Enchanting, I've managed to put together some solid resist combinations, provided I know what spells a particular enemy is using. Still occasionally get blown up, but at least I can deal with it the next time around.
The only thing that still really gets me is frost damage to mobility. Is there anything that negates that right away?
I do hope for the next Elder Scrolls they will put in more variety for the missions and some actual puzzles and dungeon design (they do look pretty unique, but maybe some more exploration and labyrinths and less corridor runs, plus some elaborate puzzles with some physics as well maybe and not just turning rings.)
I mean the game is cool and all, and the quest storylines are cool, but it does feel all a bit samey 30 hours in. Same as in Fallout.
Sill great game, but could be so much better.
Got gay married, level 31, no idea what the main quest is or how to do it. I've been to the top of the mountain but whatever's next is not obvious and there's a thousand other quests to do.
Another Skyrim update for PC today.
Another Skyrim update for PC today.
They officially patched in 4 GB Tuning.
What the hell. I'm doing the Master Criminal cheevo, so I'm outside of Whiterun and I kill the stablemaster. Suddenly a bunch of red dots appear on my compass, and I go to meet them thinking they're guards trying to arrest/kill me. But they weren't guards at all. No less than eight Louis Letrushes rush me and start pounding on me like they're posessed.
I didn't realize that you could choose sides at the start of the game as you were running from the dragon. Can you switch sides latter on?Wait, what?

It's not so much about the challenge. I just want more moments where I explore, encounter a tough enemy, and get completely wrecked. I guess artificially making the world seem scarier, or something.
It just depends what you're leveling. If you just level with your non-combat skills you'll still be pretty weak for a while.
i need a house and am about at the same spot as link, but i think i read before that you should wait until winterhold because it is cheaper amongst other reasons, right?
also i just "got" lydia but lfter her hanging in the castle because i see no reason in letting go of my still alive companion who is loaded to the gills with my bullshit (she's the woman who challenges you to a fistfight in that bar). i figure i'll just come back later and grab lydia up when my current mule is dead

Yes. Far easier than in fallout also.
How does archery feel in Skyrim?
well, shit. are they important like in New Vegas with long quest lines and stuff?
also, you all mentioned earlier about how your level when you meet them dictates their strength? I have the woman swordbutler standing around and I'm running away from her. Is it the first meet/talk, or the first time you ask them to join you?

Nope. No stories as far as I've seen. They are purely pack mules. Early in the game when you are weak they are more useful but once you start to level up decently they really only function as pack mules. They often get in the way in real combat or get themselves killed. I often tell my partner to just wait in a room while I go clear out a particularly tough room up ahead.
As far as their hp.spoiler (click to show/hide)Followers have stats just like the player in skills and health. Those values are static and are set the first time you enter/load the zone that they are in. There are also maximum level caps for followers should your level be higher than that the first time you encounter them.
For example, most people meet Lydia very early on and she'll end up being locked in with 100 health and skills in the 20s, so she won't be as effective as Jordis (the housecarl you get in Solitude) whom you'll usually meet much later on since the house costs 25k gold to purchase.[close]

thanks. yeah, I'm just gonna talk to Lydia an tell her to wait in the house I eventually buy. I liked that new vegas has quests when bringing along companions (compared to Fallout 3, where I didn't know there were companions).QuoteHow does archery feel in Skyrim?

is magic that poor? seems good so far. I'm doing equal parts sword+shield, stealth+archery, and magic (either double or with a sword). only thing that killed me was this giant. I sneaked up and shot him in the face, it didn't do shit, so I ran away.
and last question (for now) how are horses handled? if I buy a horse now, is it like old ES games or did they update it to be like Red Dead where I can summon my horse wherever? right now 1k seems like a lot of money.
I've got my alteration to 100 and my conjuration in the 90s; I run around in cloth and I'm basically a badass.
I bought the 5k house and it's some shithole. I read the book that said I needed to talk to the same dude I bought it from to upgrade it, but there's no option.
and I saw a dragon flying around in the world. I shot arrows at it (and missed), yelled, and other stuff but it wouldn't come down and fight me.
yeah, it seems things take time in this game.
I went back to my house to store more junk I'll never use, and Lydia is now staying there. I wish I could make her pay rent or something.
One thing I'm confused about with this whole "do and you'll level up" system is that I'm not sure what the effects of high speech are. I fail all the persuasion things and can't tell how to level it up.
The item switching and hotkeying is pretty annoying. I don't want to have to go into a menu each time.
still don't know if I should follow the main quest and talk to the greybeards/whatever, or continue exploring. the mission right before gave me the dragon shout. I just want a nice natural break in the main quest to go off and do my thing.
This happens all the time: I see a target, I sneak up to a ledge to shoot at it. I aim, my reticule on the target, my character at the ledge and boom... the arrows go straight down, like I'm shitting them out my ass. There's nothing blocking my view, it just does this.
I married Aela the Huntress because she was hot but now there is some other hot piece of tail I want to marry and I can't. Boo Bethesda I say. BOO!No divorce by murder option available?

Also speech, smithing, alchemy is super tedious to level up. Wish I realized sooner.
I didn't think they had level caps? You just kept leveling slower and slower
level cap is around 80ish
I think there's a mod to increase level scaling. I might use it when I get there.
I presume (hope) that any substantial DLC increases the cap, but I don't think that's likely.
Pfft. I'm level 47 and I still have three Holds I've yet to visit.
Pfft. I'm level 47 and I still have three Holds I've yet to visit.
That's never happened for me.
If you separated from the person you escaped with as soon as you got out of the caves, you might miss it, but if you stay with them they show you the first three stones and tell you to touch one.

Once they player has finish killing all the people in Skyrim, his final battle is to have a mass dragon orgy with his fellow homosexual warriors he meets on his way and all take turns impregnating the dragon with homosexual dragon eggs. Once the dragon has been backdoor feasted, the player must kill it. The dragon needs to be killed, so the spirit of death and gayness can enter the new eggs and reek havoc onto the rest of the world. This new destruction will be playable in the next Skyrim saga.
Yeah enemy pathfinding is bork. I took out about 8 bandits attacking me all at once by walking back and forth across the top of a waterfall. They wouldn't cross the water and just kept going the long way around.:rofl
I haven't had anything from the thieves guild, where the hell is that?
70 hours in now and finally getting bored. I've encountered at least a half dozen quest breaking glitches too. How anyone can say this is GOTY is beyond me. Great game, but the jank is through the roof.
Gonna try and get 1000 asap and shelve this until some DLC lands
Oh, and I've grown to really like the lore and world of this game. It's the only Elder Scrolls game I've played.
Should I play Oblivion after this? You can get the ultimate edition with all content for like 15$ now
Oblivion Gates are much more annoying than Dragons.
one of my favorite things in this game is how 90% of canned animations fail. it's like a too human cutscene generator. my guy is fumbling around in mid air and 20 seconds later the dragon several feet away from me dies.
actually, my favorite one is when you stab someone in the gut and you see your characters emotionless face looking into the void.
Definitely the most glitch ridden game I have ever played.
yeah I'm definitely keen to play it for the lulz
main quest blows dick, Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood questlines are way better.
:piss The Greybeards :piss2
so glad I have 1000 on this and don't have to play again it until DLC lands

there were a few pics i saw on gaf that seemed a significant improvement. shield textures, wood textures on poles, etc.
it seems it's a whole lot of general texture improvements instead of a smaller number of huge improvements that the mods give you.
Signs pointing to them announcing the first DLC tomorrow.

looks NICE, but also maybe not that big
DLC looks like straight booty stank, I'm calling some FO3 2 hour cocktent, but please prove me wrong.
And you mentioned DLC. We would like to do DLC; we don’t have any specific plans yet, but they’ve been really successful and we like making them. So right now I can say that we’d like to do less DLC but bigger ones -- you know, more substantial. The Fallout 3 pace that we did was very chaotic. We did a lot of them -- we had two overlapping groups -- and we don’t know what we’re going to make yet, but we’d like them to be closer to an expansion pack feel.
Bethesda’s started sending out beta invites access to Skyrim’s first DLC content pack, Dawnguard.
Bethesda’s Twitter account confirmed the news.
“With an overwhelming number of applicants, half of one percent received invites,” said Bethesda.
“We look forward to feedback in our private forum.”
The company later tweeted that more than 75% of the invites have now been sent out and that the rest will be released tomorrow.
Skyrim: Dawnguard will release as a timed 360 exclusive on Xbox Live on June 26 and will cost 1,600 MSP. PS3 and PC versions of the DLC will be released at a undisclosed later date.
According to Bethesda, fans can finish Dawnguard somewhere from 15 to 20 hours, depending if you do some exploration or not.
that price makes me think it will be smallish :(
The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim's first expansion pack Dawnguard is coming out tomorrow on Xbox 360 for 1600 Microsoft Points, developer Bethesda has announced.
Those with French, Italian, German and Spanish copies of the game won't receive the add-on until mid-July. They will however get the recent version 1.6 update adding mounted combat and Kinect support today.
There's still no word on a Dawnguard release date for the PC and PS3 versions of Skyrim, though we've reached Bethesda for comment and will update as we hear back.
Dawnguard will allow players to go down the path of becoming a Vampire Lord or join the Dawnguard, a band of vampire hunters.
Being a Vampire Lord comes with all sorts of nifty perks like being able to sprout wings and hover, or raise the dead. The catch is that they take damage during the day.
Vampire Hunters, on the other hand, get cool crossbows and can summon trolls to fight for them, but alas, no flying or bat transformations. Boo!
The expansion promises 10 to 20 hours of gameplay.
Once Dawnguard is installed (along with the 1.6 title update), players that are level 10 or higher will hear rumors about the Dawnguard from guards in major cities. They may also be approached by a courier who will give them a note about the Dawnguard. Otherwise, if your character is below level 10 or you wish to find the Dawnguard on your own, you can seek out the Dawnguard headquarters roughly east/southeast of Riften. It can be reached by a small cave through the mountains.
Timed exclusives :yuck
Timed exclusives :yuck
Microsoft loves me. Deal with it. :smug
Exhausting all of Dawnguard's goodies took the best part of a day, and it certainly didn't seem like time wasted. Mostly, however, this expansion feels like an excuse to get back into the game as it already existed - and for Bethesda to smuggle in some gameplay updates - rather than a coherent addition with anything new to say.
It's a strange one, then. Apart from the (sadly) expected Bethesda hiccups - erratic quest markers, odd spawn glitches - there's nothing really wrong with Dawnguard. At the same time, there's nothing here that demands 1600 Microsoft Points' worth of attention. If all you want is a solid side quest and some good loot, this will scratch that itch. If you were hoping for something more epic and ambitious, keep waiting.
was that morrowind?

Killed a lot of people including the emperor and am now a wanted (lizard wo)man. Went to the Ratways and had my face surgically changed, yet when I went to another town the guards stopped me for my criminal past. How is this possible? :(
The crazy thing to me is that they are adding voice acting. Well, a crazy thing among many.
You know how I know Skyrim is the game of the generation?
Dropped in 2011 and people are still playing and enjoying and rediscovering new things about it in 2014 :smug

I like trying to sneak around, especially at night. Man, night is my favorite time especially in a city. I wish it lasted longer. I'm going to join the thief guild, shit sounds dope.
Last night I went on a quest to save this black chick from a group of black dudes trying to take her to Hammerfall. Got into their lair, killed a bunch, then realized the boss had like 10 buddies so I decided to instead help him capture the chick. Lied to her, led her to the tables and gave her up for 500 gold. Felt kinda bad.IIRC, homegirl sold the motherland out for 30 pieces of silver to a group of pseudo-religious/nationalist zealots, got the fuck out of dodge, then when she saw the writing on the wall, tried to manipulate you into saving her skin. So fuck her.
Picked up the wood elf in the first town as a companion and kept him until about level ten when I could no longer stand his incompetence and worthlessness so I killed him on a mountain top and then resurrected his dead naked body. Fuck, I hated that guy. I don't have Lydia because I don't feel like having dragons in my game flying around when I'm so weak. Where else is a sweet tank companion?
Haha, this is that elf you helped out in that town, PD.
Damn just realized the thief guild isn't where I thought it was, it's in Riften. Pretty far away. I'm assuming it would be a bad idea to travel all the way there as a lv6? I'll just do quests and get closer, I guess.
Does difficulty scale based on your level, or are there high level zones like WoW or Diablo?
What are you doing in people's homes? Exploring? Do you have access to fences yet?

Well I was at the inn and noticed a particular guy was in there drinking. After leaving I happened to pass his house, and figured I'd go inside. I wasn't planning on stealing anything, I've never stolen anything in the game actually.
:tocry
I want to know what the guard was doing inside his house. How did he know I was going to visit
:beli
I'm going to just become a thane there. I don't want to go to jail again.
Have you seen the Oblivion things? :kobeyuck
This is a step up, amazingly.
Good damn the faces in this game are ugly :-X
Everytime I see PC videos of this game it makes me want to buy a PC. I've been saying this for years now, though.

I understand this complaint for Oblivion and Morrowind, but not Skyrim.
Oh? This is how elves look in my copy of Skyrim:

Maybe you got the wrong version by mistake. :smug :hitler
Yup, the elves look quite grounded in Skyrim. I'm tired of the "high class elf" fantasy tropes. Can't help but chuckle whenever I see that one elf motherfucker cutting wood. By fantasy stereotype standards it's like seeing a Jew working at Gamestop
:hitler
I got the skeleton key. Should I keep it or finish the quest?
Any consensus on this?
Just checked my (third) save and I'm 110 hours in and have only completed half of the major quest lines. Level 45.
I believe I'm turning into a Vampire, anything I can do about that?Drink a cure disease potion or get blessed by one of the gods at a shrine.
Or turn. #YOLO
You should try and see if you can find that dog again or restart the mission somehow. That was the coolest quest in my first 30 hours of play.
Sicknesses show up under magic effects. Always good to carry a couple cure disease potions with you.
