Then the next book is where the entire series falls apart.

I stopped reading the series in this one. I kind of liked it but...its a bit too dense, too full.

wtf?  Memories of Ice is probably the best in the series.

And yes.  Coltaine is easily the biggest badass in the entire series, which is saying something.  Quick Ben is awesome too, but in a different kind of way.

really, only the first book is the really sketchy one. the quality is pretty even with a few ham-handed exceptions (like whenever he writes lesbians in book 8, errrrrrrgh)

karsa orlong :bow2

trull sengar is the best character, though :'(

Karsa Orlong has the best lines in the entire series, easily.  My personal favorite has to be when he's about to fight Rhulad and he tells the erstwhile Emperor of a Thousand Deaths, "I will kill you... once."

Trull is good, but I think Tehol Beddict might be my favorite character.

Memories of Ice is where the DBZ superpowers start to filter in and the series becomes basically that show with better writing.

i wouldn't call it dbz superpowers, given that normal humans can take down gods. steven erikson's whole premise was "what would a world and culture be like if the gods were real, like in greek and norse mythos, and suffered from all the same weaknesses and failings, after 200,000 years?" the big badasses get dropped like suckaz, and the biggest losers ascend. the idea is that everything really hinges on fate and circumstance, like achille's getting shot in the foot.

also, the central conceit of the book is to relegate perspectives on the characters based on how the world perceives them, not how steven erikson himself perceives them. he WANTS ascendency and the elder gods to be completely confusing and contradictory in their seeming omnipotence and consummate weakness, just like the gods from our own world's mythology. he's said as much in like, every interview

tehol and bugg/mael are awesome, too. i love how in later books shadowthrone and cotillion are making mael out to be this tyrannical gangsta of the elder gods, and yer thinkin' "hee hee, he's the patient old duff from midnight tides and reaper's gale!"

worst characters are, of course: crokus/cutter, who's too cool for horny stoner chick scillara; seren pedac, who spends far too much time moping; and worst of all, FUCKING KRUPPE, who is fizban from those shitty weis/hickman books. special mention goes to all tiste andii not named anomander fucking rake (korlat and sandoral are passable, but whatevs)

Anomander Rake was pretty f'n awesome too.  Really, Erikson just excelled at creating awesome ass kicking characters and letting them, you know, kick ass.  Onos Toolan in the last couple books is a good example, when he's not being a whiner anyway.

Maurice- sorry there was no underage fuckin' and horny dwarves.

I've still only read Gardens of the Moon, but that was really enjoyable. I've got Deadhouse Gates, but am waiting until I have some spare brainspace before starting it.

It is, but I'd stop about halfway through. The series gets so convoluted after House of Chains it becomes a slog. And I still pushed through it because every now and again interesting characters would surface, then disappear under the crushing weight of a billion other characters with a billion other narratives.

But I mean, if you want a series that's done and that's your only requirement, then I guess you could read this.

You talk like it's the Twilight series. Get a grip.

how in the world did I do that? It's just a superbly disappointing series crushed under its own narrative. It's still leagues beyond Twilight.
