I am realizing now that aside from Zelda and Uncharted 3. All -- ALL of them -- of the games I'm getting this year are open-world: Batman, Skyrim, Saints Row, Dark Souls.
I think this says a lot about my tastes. I enjoy the freedom games give you the most because it's the most unique aspect of this medium.
By the same token, I also have a hard on for arcade games. I've bought Daytona and Guardian Heroes so far and I fully plan on getting more arcade shit.
But at the same I also love simulations. NBA2k12 is something me and a few friends do every weekend. I also currently have a hard on for Animal Crossing.
I guess I like any game style and have no distinct game bias?
What games do you gravitate towards, bore? Sorry if this topic is stupid, but I'm without sleep and I'm bored.

Fifa with friends.
Easy to pick up, hard to master, fun with friends. I'm pretty sure this is my most played game in the last 2 years.
Really looking forward to playing the full version of Diablo 3 too.
-
Online multiplayer games. I rarely play single player games any more.
-
Hollywood gaming
1.Open world games,RPG
2.FPS
ignore pretty much everything else

Bang for buck gaming is generally what I do now. So things like online shooters work really well for me as I buy a game and then end up with a few hundred hours of gaming. I also tend to play the bigger "Hollywood Gaming" titles along with a healthy dose of ios or XBLA stuff.

good thread Himu.
Basically, I'm down for anything my adult ass will enjoy.
I've been playing retro shit I grew up with.
I've been playing some AAA hi def blockbusters.
I have no idea what hype draws me to new titles.
I used to be like "OMG new Suda game", or OMG new JRPG
Now I don't even know what I like anymore. I put 100 hours into Dark Souls, I love it. I put in 150 hours into Red Dead, is it a better game? Who knows? FF8 is better? Probably? I was 14.
Saints Row The Third is all i'm anticipating.

at this stage I realise I'm a sandbox cigarillo. I love these deals. Bully and Just Cause 2 were some of the biggest boners for me in this gen

Indie/niche games, Japanese games, retro games...
-
1Open World/WRPG
2FPS
3Indie JRPG/WRPG
-
WPRGs
Open-World Games
JRPGs That Don't Suck [:(]
-
Anything that isnt sports, Tower Defense, RTS, or on PC
-
Hollywood gaming...and DS roms cuz I can't afford hollywood gaming :'(
-
japanese weeabootastic games duh!
-
When I played a lot of games, it was basically anything that was challenging or took a lot of time. Nowadays it's pretty much only anything that takes a long time, so pretty much rpgs available on the pc. I am kind of bummed that Demon/Dark Souls isn't available on pc, but not enough to get a fucking console. :P
-
I also currently have a hard on for Animal Crossing.
This is probably the gayest thing you've ever typed, and for you that's saying something.
-
1Open World/WRPG
2FPS
3Indie JRPG/WRPG
What are some of your favorites for #3?
-
Horror Survival is my favorite genre. But since the genre is basically dead, I lean towards adventure games. First person adventures (Half-Life, Metroid prime) and third person adventures (Uncharted, Zelda, Tomb Raider) are my most favorite games now. Followed by JRPG's.
-
Crappy mecha games from Japan.
-
Since I don't have a lot of time to play games, I gravitate toward games that have a predictable ending point like sports game or COD multiplayer.
If I only have an hour to fit some gaming in, I'll be thinking about how Madden/NBA2K11 take about 50 minutes to complete a game or how COD matches last 10 minutes or so and get a few in. It makes me feel that I was able to accomplish something in the time I was given.
-
most everything, although I haven't played an RTS in a while, and MMOs aren't games.
my favorite types of games are action/adventure/rpg. also really like stealth games. Zelda is my favorite series and MGS is up there.
-
easterm european rpgs
-
Hard, skill-based games mostly (ie. arcade games, action games, fighting games, etc.). I'm starting to get bored of everything else.

I have a feeling that I'll gravitate even more toward shorter games once the baby is born.
-
Xbox 360 games.
-
Blizzard games
-
The genres I don't bother with are MMOs, RTS, casual schlock, and any detailed simulation game (sports sims, racing sims, those really complicated PC space sims with the 300 page manuals, etc).
-
1Open World/WRPG
2FPS
3Indie JRPG/WRPG
What are some of your favorites for #3?
WRPG: Avernum Games, Avadon, Book of Eschalon 1 & 2, Dins Curse
I only game on PC so I have to settle for table scraps for this genre JRPG: Breath of Death/Cthulu, Chantelize/Recettear Ys games not really indie more like niche, don't really make em on PC anymore :'(
I guess some of those don't really qualify as RPG's J or W :shrug

as long as i get to kill shit, i can enjoy myself
honestly, that's probably the only prerequisite i have. i dont do sports games, driving games, sim games, puzzle games, but if i get to blow something up or kill someone i'll give it a shot.

I like minimalism alot when it comes to genre preferences. Warioware Twisted is in my top 5 games of all time because of that desire. It also means I prefer 2d games over 3d. That's not to say I don't enjoy 3d games where I feel certain mechanics benefit from the perspective (Tony Hawk's Pro Skater) I love straightforward platformers and puzzle games. The most in-depth genre I partake in is probably the occassional turn based tactics game, although I usually get burned.
When I venture into say... more 3d action/adventure stuff, I'm VERY peculiar and even tiny things will turn me off enough to trade it in. I hate the story integration trend and all the cutscene baggage as well. I get pissy when the camera is too close to my character model. etc etc
