Title: help with guitar tuning
Post by: Himu on January 02, 2007, 06:16:16 PM
Okay so most of the tips say hold on to the fifth fret while tuning. What exactly does this mean? They say pull the string at the 5th fret while tuning A string. I pull it while going from E to A and I get a stiffled sound because I'M HOLDING THE STRING. What does holding on to the fret do at all?!

Do you have a tuner?  Just tune the open strings (don't fret them) to 440 pitch.

The whole fifth fret thing is when you are tuning by ear.  For instance, if your sixth string (the big fat one!) is tuned to E, then the note sounded on the fifth fret of the sixth string (E string) would be equivalent to an A note.  Which is what the next string up should be tuned to.  Except for the G string, you would fret that on the fourth fret to get a B (which is what the second string is tuned to in standard pitch).  Yeah, I know, that's a little confusing.

And you don't pull on the string from the fifth fret or whatever that means.

Pull?  Are you literally pulling or are you reading it wrong?

Just buy a tuner anyways.

Edit: Use the tuner until you get comfortable enough to tune by ear.

Edit 2: Do what ermac said  lolz

So you put your finger on the METAL PART OF THE FRET and not the string.

You need to put your finger on the string right behind the fret.  You're effectively making the string shorter to sound different notes.

Jesus Himuro, are you distinguished mentally-challenged? I've never played a guitar, and I could probably pick one up RIGHT NOW and tune it quicker than you could based on those videos.

I'm pretty sure I'm tone deaf. A reason why I pretty much stopped learning guitar. That, and I'm lazy.
