Probably want to spend from $150 to $200 bucks as I'm not fanatical about graphics. Which one should I get? I've always been an ATI guy in the past but I'm open to an nvidia card.

this should be helpful:

I recently upgraded to the 560ti, which is a bit over your range (I got mine for $230 w/rebate plus a copy of Batman Arkham City for Steam). I'm liking it, but there isn't a huge difference from my old 275 unless it's one of the few beefier games like Battlefield 3, and I assume The Witcher 2. The 275 handled most PS3/360/PC game fine for the most part (60fps, 1680x1050 resolution, high settings). It depends on what you want it for.

I've got a 560 Ti too and it's pretty good. The cheapest I can find it for sale right now looks to be around $220 however so maybe that's a bit too expensive. The vanilla 560 is under $200 but it's not as quite as powerful. I don't know a whole lot about the current AMD cards so someone else will hopefully cover those.

I got a Radeon 5770 HD for $120

Very good card. Runs SC2 on ultra. I don't think it can run newer, more demanding games at the highest levels but it's a damn good card and will most likely do what you need it to do.
-
thx for the info
-
I have the same video card as PD and have loved it so far. Then again, I'm also not a grx whore or anything so ymmv.

:rock
btw how does Skyrim run on it? I'd imagine it can get good performance, I'm more worried about my core 2 duo cpu

No real complaints, game looks good enough.

How much more is a 5850? IMO you'd be better off going with that instead of a 5770 if it's not much more expensive.

Can't really go wrong with a GTX460:

Any tips for a card that is really quiet (at least in 2d/standard windows) that still performs reasonably well in games in the same price bracket?
I was out of pc gaming for the last couple of years and will mainly catch up to games of the last 3 years, so it doesn't need to be future proof, but it wouldn't hurt if I could play the big games of this holiday season (like Skyrim) somewhat decently.
-
560 regular (non-Ti), won't go over 150$ :)
-
yeah, either a gtx 460 or a 560 will give you good performance for at least another couple of years, on my 460 i am able to pull fps in the 30s-40s on ultra in BF3 (dips into the 20s sometimes)

Is this card crappy?

Nope but for a little more you can get a 6870 which is awesome.

I really don't reccomend ATI. Almost every game released has had tremendous problems with them. Rage had huge problems, Skyrim still does, and Saints Row 3 is unplayable for most people on ATI.
I'm currently on a 6850. it's ok. I'm really eyeing up a 560Ti because I am tired of AMD's bullshit. Hopefulyl one goes on sale on Black Friday because paying $250 for 4~fps improvement isn't that fun.

Got the 6870. Seems nice. Surprisingly quiet

good call.

Guys I have some noob questions about this fine subject, I currently own a pc with the following motherboard: Foxconn 45CMX/45GMX/45CMX-K (Socket 775) and this video card: Intel(R) 82945G Express Chipset Family I want to upgrade my pc this holiday and was wondering if I can install modern video cards on my motherboard, I'm not looking for one of the latest cards maybe something that can play Skyrim on medium, also what kind of processors can I install in this machine?
-
From what I can see, it has a PCI-E port so you should be able to put a modern video card in there.
Dunno enough about intel boards to tell you what kind of CPU you can out in there. I think 775 is pretty old, tho.
Thanks.
So guys which of these cheap cards should I buy?

Not dx11,but it will play everything on the market with ease and it will serve you 3-4 years at least
There is just one another thing, you need 500 Watt power supply minimum in your PC
-
How about this one?

none. those are all unimaginably horrible. the 9500 is the worst. i have old laptops with beefier gpus than that.
-
Sold my 6870 and picked up a 7970. I don't know why but I'm a sucker for AMD
It's louder than my old card. Runs hotter than it. But nice to be able to run nearly everything with a high frame rate.
