Title: OFFICIAL NEW XBOX DASHBOARD THREAD |OT|
Post by: The Sceneman on December 07, 2011, 12:20:14 AM
okay so new dash is up apparently, but I can't connect to XBL. When I finally managed to connect once it says 'do u want updaet' and I'm like 'yeah', then an error msg.

Ugh, fml. I can't play Xbox if my achievements aren't date stamped.

Guess I have to do some actual work or something.  Life = ruined

Yeah it's not fucking working. Had to fight with it repeatedly for it to connect and download at all. Dunno how they can blow a rollout this badly since they've done dash updates several times now.

I thought it looked kinda sleek at first. But that all went out the window after jumping through like 12 screens just to see a friend's bio or something like that from the dash.

i think the best part of the beta thing is that we got through all that frustration and denial stuff a while ago and are now at the acceptance stage.

is this out? can I still use my media remote? I skimmed the giantbomb video and it looked like a lot of heavy controller integration with the right stick doing shit.

I like that a major update on the 360 takes a minute while "we changed the clock font" takes 10+ minutes on the PS3.

oh wow this is really cluttered.  I had to actually look for the arcade games.  Then I thought Joe Danger was out and went to download the trial, but it wasn't.  So you can sort arcade marketplace by release date, which includes unreleased games.  rightio.

quick launch and bing seem good and it's snappier than before.

Anyone here have an HDMI capture card, or have a monitor that doesn't support HDCP? Someone on GAF is saying that this new update forces HDCP from the moment you turn the console on, just like the PS3. Which basically means that capturing video via HDMI will no longer work.

Better not be true. But I wouldn't put it past MS to randomly screw people 6 years into a console's lifecycle.

Just ran a test recording of the dashboard and the opening of Halo:CE and it works on my end.

I don't think it'll work with any of the video apps, however.

Yeah, as far as I know it's always had HDCP on video stuff like Netflix or whatever, but recording gameplay is working normally? Great. That will save me a whole lot of headaches.

I like that the default tab is no longer that stupid spotlight shit.  As long as I can get to my game immediately upon booting into the dash, they can fill the rest of the screen with advertising for all I care (not really).

And the list of arcade games come up immediately rather than waiting for achievements and whatnot to loan.  That's good.

Haven't delved into much else.

well that's dumb

:lol  I noticed that too.  Although, I hardly ever use those controls except to install a game.

If they've stopped loading all the Achievements and crap while navigating the Game Library, someone wised the hell up. I always wanted to go into my library and find stuff I need to look at, but it just takes too long to sit and wait for the list to compile. I grew to hate that little "loading..." swirly icon.

Smh Sceneman :piss2 her sultry voice and accent is hot, definitely has a more AK/Aussie twang over your classic NZ accent though. You need to get out of the city and go down the West Coast or the deep south. That's where the really interesting Kiwi accents are born.

I hate how the advertisement on the opening screen is like 4x bigger than your game icon, and how the social and video tabs are in front of the games tab. But I like how your XBLA games are displayed with boxarts now.

Cloud saves are awesome though. No more swapping hard drives, no need to buy a memory card, I can just put all of my J360 saves into the cloud and be ready to go. Best thing about the new dash. Until my saves are mysteriously deleted and I lose 100s of replays.

Don't give shit about ads and stuff like that which riles up the Internet.

What does bother me is how some simple processes take longer now by a few button presses. For just signing on and playing the game I want, it's faster which is nice. For navigating actual content to go anywhere it's either the same or worse in a lot of cases which is not so nice.

Ultimately it's just another hud in the grand scheme of things so I don't really care all that much either way.

Xbox 360 users concerned at the prominent placement of advertisements on the console's new dashboard have devised a number of workarounds to disable them entirely.

Each method, as posted on Reddit, involves blocking the server Microsoft uses to deliver advertising to the console - rad.msn.com.

One option is to block the domain via your router, if the device's settings support this. After doing so, trying to access the domain via a computer and receiving a 404 or "security" error means the address has been blocked. Receiving a 403 error means the address has not been blocked.

A more detailed method involves using the free OpenDNS service, which can filter your connection and block specific sites. Instructions for doing this lie below, although using this method may require you to re-download any title updates for games you have played.

Sign up for a free OpenDNS account.
Add a network for your current IP address.
Go to Advanced Settings and next to 'Domain Typos', ensure 'Enable typo correction' is checked.
Go to Web Content Filtering settings and set the filtering level to 'None', and under 'Manage individual domains', put rad.msn.com and select 'Always block' and then click 'Add domain'.
On your Xbox, go to System Settings -> Network Settings -> (your connection) -> Configure Network -> DNS settings -> Manual, and enter the OpenDNS IP addresses for the primary and secondary DNS servers: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.
Clear your hard drive cache: System Settings -> Storage -> Hard Drive -> press Y -> Clear System Cache

this is war :gun

actually, now that I think about it, the ads aren't as intrusive as I thought.  The big ad is game-related thing...I guess the problem with that is that it's always going to be some shitty "AAA" game.

But my life has become pretty ad free, so it's jarring to see them.  I would block this...

Having empty/duplicate boxes isn't really a solution.

And OpenDNS? Don't they place ads while browsing as well?

Only save files can be transfered there.

So... does this mean the Gamertag can be logged into anywhere? I mean, if the big deal was "You don't need a Memory Unit or USB drive to play somewhere else now!" -and- the Cloud doesn't let you copy your account up there... then it's doing it automatically?
Title: Re: OFFICIAL NEW XBOX DASHBOARD THREAD |OT|

I 'recovered' my gamertag 1 million times at friends houses and it was always an ordeal. Logins and > 1 hour of transfer time.

Yeah, xbox was always doing this thing, but it was not sweet

And this new cloud thing seems to not enable mobile play that good. It just saved me from copying my Sega Bass Fishing save when I stayed at my dads house and lugging it over via USB.

Title: Re: OFFICIAL NEW XBOX DASHBOARD THREAD |OT|
Post by: chronovore on December 12, 2011, 08:00:56 AM
Yeah, but the gamertag is the bigger issue. If you "recover" your gamertag, it will change your UUID, and if that UUID is used for any particular save data, that data will become dissociated from your new UUID.
