I watched the first half or so today, and I can officially cement this in my mind as a bonified classic. :pimp

"bonafide"
and what happens? what's good?

A dinosaur-like creature shows up in the middle of a big ass lake, after being carried there by the blast from the atomic bomb. Also, he's been turned into a walking H Bomb. It rocks.
Anyway, so he shows up near this small island region in Japan and scares the shit out of the inhabitants, and then the ever-so-awesome Takeshi Shimura holds a press conference of sorts about Godzilla. That's it, pretty much. I'm only halfway through.

I thought the movie was kind of stupid when I was little, acting was bad and the storyline didn't make sense with the hundereds of sequels and cartoons that came from it, but I think I remembered seeing some old black and white scene a few years later that wasn't bad, talked about genetics and fucked up world politics, sounded good at the time. I'll try watching it and see what holds up and what doesn't but I usually hate movies from the time period, shitty production and don't hold up to modern preferences.

Did you watch the original Japanese version, or the cobbled-together North American cut? Virtually all talk of nuclear testing and political aims are removed from the latter and replaced with poor acting and sloppy cuts.
The original, uncut film is a true masterpiece for its time, a daunting look at the effects of nuclear war and many government's attempts to conceal information from their people.

original with subtitles. that part actually seemed interesting without monsters falling on buildings but I always thought because of the other movies that it was an attempt to get people to pay attention to world politics by showing big monsters smashing and bashing.
-
Well, the other movies are basically pure escapism, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. If anything, they are definitely less politically motivated than the first.

Please, all of them have horrible acting and extremely shallow plots; enough of this "wacky jappy overrules all" bullshit. If I want to watch a bad yet somewhat exciting monster movie I'll make sure it's in color.

Do you get through your head just a little bit how fucking idiotic it is to call it "wacky jappy"?

Excellent movie

Probably a bad choice yes. But I couldn't think of anything else to describe these people who don't care how horribly stupid/bad/TERRIBLE something is if it has OMG JAPAN INFLUENCES

The sequels are campy fun. However I dont think anyone has ever questioned the original Gojira's place as part of classic cinema. It's place is equal to that of the original King Kong.
WAIT WAIT WAIT did PD call the original as campy and stupid? What the hell. The original Gojira is beloved by film buffs.

It is? Well maybe I'm thinking of something else lol. I certainly have never seen a good Godzilla movie.
King Kong is not a good movie either. It's one of the great movies of all time due to its technological innovative, similar to movies like Birth of a Nation (which is also far from a "good" movie).

I wish there was a way I could just censor out anything PD says about movies.
However in this case I may be biased, I have like 10 Godzilla movies and the Gamera 3-movie set.

The original Gojira is a seriouis drama film. The sequels all were campy action. There was very little action in the original, it focused more on Japan and how it dealt with being in the post-WW2 world.
America butchered the film and cut out like an hour and added like an hour of "new" stuff to turn into a hokey Godzilla film though. :lol
Trust me Gojira is a classic.

PD, swing and a miss! ::)
