Post by: dcharlie on December 13, 2011, 09:18:54 AM: Seriously - the most damning recent thing on the maturity of the industry is the reaction to the Metal Gear/Platinum Games/Konami thing....

I've seen several vaguely bullshitty pieces about how it's not about entitlement and you sould say no comment and that's the practice and blah'deefuckingblah.

I wish the industry would grow the fuck up - come and work in ANY OTHER industry and find out how much stuff you work on that you cannot talk about or have to deny involvement in. Just becuase you THINK you know (or maybe even ACTUALLY know) something doesn't mean that asking the people a question about it means you are entitled to the truth.

It's just insane. Also - in the end - why the FUCK do people care?! Bu bu bu bu we should have been TOLD or they should have said no comment! FUCK me. Seriously.

you'd think anyone over the age of 13 would understand moral relativism, but I'm not surprised that the concept is lost on some people whose only interaction with the world is through the internet and whose only moral choices they are responsible for are in Mass Effect. Although if they can't understand NDA, then Mass Effect might be a little advanced. The Witcher might blow their minds completely.

There's some deeper psychology at work here, but we all know internet gamers are ripe for psychoanalysis. I'm guessing a lot of the people worried about devs "lying" have trust issues in general, thus they internalize and get hurt by a response from someone with higher duties than that to the random forum poster.

seriously, why do so many of you get mad at what you read there? and why do you keep reading it and keep bitching? gaf and most other gaming sites are run by dudes in their teens and early 20s who dont have shit for real world experience because they spend all their time playing games and talking about games. we all know this, hell some of us lived this, and yet so many of you act surprised that stupid nerds act like stupid nerds time and time again. READ A BOOK OR SOMETHING

Journalism in this industry has such a symbiotic relationship with developers it doesn't really matter who says what to whom and when. It's all bull anyway. How can you expect serious journalism in this enviroment? You can't.

I can get into whatever beta and tell all my friends it's awesome or that APB is going to bomb and destroy the company unless they add in gameplay by release and there's very little chance anything happens to me. With a "journalist" there's a variety of higher level consequences like where you lose your job or access to games/previews/etc., but it's still not as restricting as those who are actually involved in working on the product.

It's similar to piracy in that regard. If somebody unconnected pirates a game they probably won't ever get in trouble unless they do volume, a journalist assists in piracy (like those guys a couple years back who were using review copies) they generally have more serious problems, someone working on production helps in the piracy they have a really big problem if they get caught.

I think one of the reactions "journalists" and gamers like on GAF (not just there) are having is that they flit from HIGH to HIGH and the details of any story are not really important. What is Jaffe working on?!? MUST BE TWISTED METAL TO SAVE THE PS3! "Nope, not working on that." OH WELL THEN IT MUST BE SECRET PS3 GAME FINALLY!!!!!!!!! OR THAT PAINTING SHAKESPEAREAN GAME ABOUT WAR IN AMERICA! "Oh, it really was Twisted Metal and check out these new things we're doing" WHAT? IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE SOMETHING AMAZING TWISTED METAL IS SUCH A PS1 FRANCHISE, BORING, LOOKS LIKE 360 TITLE, WHERE'S NAUGHTY GODS

You can't really win with the media and gamer desire that feeds off one another (especially when you have so many "elevated gamers" to sound writers/journalists in the media) to have this constant stream of NEW BETTER THAN EVER THURSDAYTON announcements and releases. And by the same token when you're scouring every inch of blogs, websites, job postings, linkedin, etc. people think they "missed out" because they found out about Resident Evil 7: Modern Scarefare three days after everyone else and they're behind and how can they ever keep up with all the new info? And if they can't find out, SOMETHING IS BEING WITHHELD FROM US!!!!

You owe us, we create you by wanting and talking about games! How are we supposed to build ourselves into a three year santorum over every trickle out of your game if you keep it from us?!? If we can't hype it up to absurd levels before we play it then we'll never have a proper three or six month later backlash where it's the worst thing to ever be produced by Western society! But don't worry we'll come back baby, we'll love you again in another year, don't worry, we always loved you, I promise...

The sites are upset because they can't feed the users, and the users are upset because they aren't getting fed. And both are upset later because they could have gorged earlier.

If games were as open as Hollywood this wouldn't happen. Who cares if something is revealed too early? Happens in Hollywood all the time. Sometimes there's teasers that surprise people, but for the most part the entire process is well documented. Instead in the gaming industry the NDAs and publishers suffocate anybody for getting a toe out of line.

Besides that, if people just keep lying about what they're making, then that becomes the new byline that no one buys (just like "no comment" is now.) It just muddies the waters of what people actually are and aren't working on and I think that stinks.
