Title: i'm gonna play: Star Wars: The Old Republic
Post by: fistfulofmetal on December 24, 2011, 10:17:19 AM
i'm on vacation next week and i don't really have anything new to play. there's a few games out there that interest me but after putting in close to 90 hours in Skyrim and 30 hours in Dark Souls... my appetite for RPG is still strong, but i want something a little, lighter.

After hearing impressions from friends at work then watching the Giantbomb Quicklook (http://www.giantbomb.com/quick-look-star-wars-the-old-republic/17-5448/), I decided Star Wars: The Old Republic might be perfect for me.

Earlier this year my friends and I decided to jump into WoW. We played for a good amount of time and I was able to see a great deal of content. I definitely enjoyed playing the game. Completing quests and exploring the gameworld was a lot of fun. Hearing that TOR had a heavy focus on story interests me a lot.

So i decided to buy TOR. this is my characer:

I've played for roughly 4 or 5 hours.

So far it does still play like I imagine most MMO play, but I really like that primary story quests are peppered with cut-scenes complete with fully voiced characters and dialog choices. Also there's Renegade/Paragon moments too! It's totally Mass Effect light in the Star Wars universe.

I'm playing an Imperial Agent which has a focus on blasters so it's almost entirely ranged combat. There's an interesting cover aspect as well to them that opens up combat moves like a sniper shot that does a lot of damage. what i like is that if there is actually a piece of cover in the area my character will roll to cover and it will actually prevent a lot of shot from hitting me. it's pretty simple but just the idea of a basic cover system in an RPG like this is cool to me.

Also i didn't mention that i'm soloing this game. i wanted to see how fun i can get from it by playing it like a regular ass single player rpg.

i'm enjoying it. i've barely scratched the surface. whether or not i'll continue playing after my first month remains to be seen but i figure i can get enough enjoyment out of it in this month to justify the price point.

so theres that. anyone else going to bother playing?

I wanted to check it out for single player.  Watching the GB quicklook, I like how you have a companion to do a lot of the boring(er) stuff.  I'm not really an mmo person, though.  I'm wary of the "Collect 25 force crystals" quests even going solo because that's what people expect in an mmo.  If it feels like KOTOR3, or Dragon Age: Star Wars, I'll try it eventually.

at one point in the quicklook Jeff burns some dude for a mission, and while he fights some new enemies, another player rolls up and burns the same dude.  I wish you could just play offline to avoid that stuff.  For a story driven mmo, or whatever the selling point is, other than star wars, that stuff really belittles your role.  But I guess that's an mmorpg.

and characters that are randomly pieced together to appear unique:

that's fine for me. when i played WoW i didn't really care for all the in-depth stuff like crafting, cooking, etc.

i just wanted to go around and do quests.

so here i can do that plus there's an actual story. and i am enjoying the story so far.

my character

game is...ok. i probably wouldn't play it if it wasn't star wars and the story wasn't fun. the republics storys are all boring bullshit though, the sith is wayyy better and i've been playing sith characters. the only problem is at level 10 you pick a advanced class and once you do you can't change it so you're stuck if you pick a bad one, like I did for my bounty hunter :(

I've been hopelessly addicted to this over the past week. Sure, it's essentially Bioware dialog in Star Wars themed WoW but, hell, I liked WoW and love Star Wars so there's nothing wrong with that. I'm a level 23 Mercenary and the class is a blast - fun singleplayer where I can pretty much solo anything and I absolutely murder in PvP. My class storyline isn't really anything more than "Hey, there's this bounty hunter tournament, go kill some dudes" but it keeps me motivated enough to keep going. I have no idea how long I'll keep playing but I do want to level at least one more character. Good shit.

Too bad the rest of the flaspoints aren't like that. The next ones are just vanilla WoW dungeons. They used the first flashpoint full of voice to make people think that's what they'll get later in the game, and it's not.

Seeing Han Solo for Manabyte's avatar, and being in the Star Wars thread, I thought "Hey, Pryor would have been pretty damned great as Lando Calrissian. Maybe a different vibe..."

I'm with Momo - it's like Babby's First MMO ver 0.6
But isn't that what you want, if you're trying to attract the venn diagram of (a) casual players and (b) Star Wars fans?

I don't understand why people care if a game like this is F2P or costs money - MMOs are so incredibly time consuming that it seems like paying $13 a month or whatever is such a miniscule cost compared to having to devote half of your free time to a game, that it really shouldn't influence your decision.

Yeah, you're 100% right; but that's just logic, and we know how reasonable consumers are about their money.

There are people who bitch about $2.99 iphone apps which they've spent a couple hours with, even though a latté at Starbucks costs $3.70 or something. They bitch about 99˘ applications which they think should be free, but you can't even get a can of soda pop out of a vending machine for a buck anymore.

I think people mean the f2p model where you don't even buy the box/game so they want to try TOR out for free without any risk of putting money towards a lame mmo

Yeah, so as a programmer I feel it's my duty to my profession to bitch about the bitching and encourage others to bitch about the bitching. We need a little less money going to line the pockets of fat-cat baristas and a little more going to feed starving software engineers.

As I should have expected its utterly and firmly an mmo. Which means I don't really care for it but says nothing about the relative quality of it since I'm not overly a fan of the genre. It's not worth playing if you are looking for the next Kotor.  But if you wanted WoW with more cutscenes and motivation then this may be up your alley.

What I don't get are people who want to solo in an MMO.

There are single player games of all types, so why jump into something grindy, with no actual endpoint?
Title: Re: i'm gonna play: Star Wars: The Old Republic

well in this game there are legit story-lines with endings (to a point). so soloing is def feasible.

i played... a lot... today. got to level 17 and finished up the storyline on the second planet. story is really cool and having fully voiced cutscenes helps a ton.

when i first got to the new planet i randomly bumped into another player doing the same task. we grouped up and ended up playing the entire day together. he was a sith warrior so i helped with his class quests and he helped with mine. so i got to see the storyline from that perspective. was a lot of fun.

then i got my ship. it's awesome.

Well if the production values are there- there really isnt much difference is there? Both LotR Online and now this game went to considerable lengths to create a story that for the most part could be accomplished alone- which is kind of neat. Its kind of like White Knight Chronicles that way.

I kind of like the idea of being in an open world with others but only playing with a very small group or even by myself. I would never join a guild or anything because that sort of interaction doesn't appeal to me at all. But yeah I kinda get your point. As a single player RPG fan, The Old Republic is lacking for me although for traditional mmo fans it's probably pretty appealing on the story front.

I hate MMOs and was hoping for the next Knights of the Old Republic. I guess I'll steer clear until they offer some sort of trial (without having to buy the game) or go Free2Play. I really wanted to check this out, but I just can't get into the genre.

Although, to be fair to MMOs, I really haven't given them much of a chance. I played Final Fantasy XI for about 2 weeks and hated it, and then down the road I played World of Warcraft for about a week and hated it.

I never really payed too much attention to this one because I'm not too thrilled about MMOs but I've been playing it since Sunday and so far I'm digging it.  I'm a level 22 Sith Marauder and the story hasn't been anything spectacular but at least there's one here, and that imo is a HUGE improvement over something like WOW where I never gave a shit about what or why I was doing anything.  It's very much a MMO but it still feels like KOTOR at the same time and since you can pretty much plow through most of this alone, if you have any interest in KOTOR you should probably at least give it a shot.

Wish the server maintenance was over with so I could go back to it....

For what its worth I don't want to come off overly harsh. The game is a solid piece of work. And its probably not fair to judge it outside of the context of the genre its in. For an MMO the story stuff is great especially relative to the genre. If you're playing it as an rpg in the context of a traditional single player rpg then its subpar. But that's admittedly not a fair way to judge it. If I was going to play any mmo if would be this one for what it means. It's more accurate to say that mmo's in general just aren't for me.

The world is too huge, too much running around, not enough quests or points of interest... there's a good shell and if you love Star Wars, you're probably willing to overlook more than me. This always annoys me. The people who say "I don't want to group with people" annoy me the most, because they're the reason we have bog standard themepark MMO's that don't require any significant teamwork and everyone gets a shiny reward for walking 5 steps without falling over.

Things in MMOs are designed to take up time. You get hooked on the next mostly meaningless reward. Once you're following the carrot on a stick, it's easy to lose time.

It's not so much the total time commitment (though there is that) but the sustained time commitment that get's me. I like da vidja, but even 30min non-stop makes me feel ill sometimes, gotta get up and putter for a minute or two. How the fuck people with kids seriously play is beyound me.

This doesn't work when you're grouping w/ others and are fighting the need to get up. Think this is why I always only grinded easy to group stuff and never fell into seriously raiding. Don't think I ever will.

i'm really liking the imperial agent storyline. finished up nar shadda and the story twists and turns are entertaining as hell.
one of my favorite touches is when my character had to go undercover as a terrorist and whenever she was in a cutscene with the terrorists she would drop her accent. i initially thought it was a mistake but nope. found that really cool.

Yea...I'll pass. I might give it a spin when it goes f2p although the prospect of downloading a billion gb of small talk isn't appealing.

I just realized I no longer have a sub to WoW. My account got taken or something (which is odd because it didn't effect SC2), but I got it back with no losses. I guess I'll sub next month, perhaps. It seems like the only time I really want to play WoW is when I can't lol. It's like scratching your dick, you don't know why, you just do it  - and if you ever put your hand down there and found no dick you'd panic.

anyhoo DAT GW2 :bow

What I dislike about the ToR beta experience and my NBA 2k12 My Player experience is how dialogue options never match what the avatar actually says. It's like you choose "That may be a problem" and the guy says "What kind of idiot are you to think that would be okay? I ought to find your mother and rape her, because that would be less a problem then what you're suggesting!"

And then you're like... why does this game want everyone to hate me

Whoever designed Tatooine should be kicked in the fucking balls until they fall off.

I wanted to start a second character as a Bounty Hunter but after learning they start on this shithole, I couldn't imagine having to play this sans a speeder.  Hell, even with one the place is a colossal pain in the ass.  Miles upon hundreds of miles of absolute nothing.

Fuck this planet.

What class are you?  I'm playing as a Sith Marauder and quite honestly I couldn't give a crap about this part of the story but it may have been in part because I was questing in one part of the map only to have to travel all the way over to some other ass end of the map without any means to fast travel next to where I needed to go.  That place takes forever to get anywhere with the speeder.  I want to finish what I need to do and never come back to this rock.  Like I said, I'd like to start a Bounty Hunter but just imagining walking around that place..... I'd blow my freakin brains out.

That whole Dune sea section is ass imo, especially seeing how empty the game can feel even in "heavily" populated areas.  Today I spent several hours without running into anyone even though the number at the top indicated there were 110+ people on the planet.  I know 110 isn't much of anything and it's even less on a map this size but if it weren't for people talking about getting high in the chat window I would've thought I was the only one there.  As popular as this game seems to be, it's one hell of a lonely experience sometimes and Tatooine made it even more so.

Were there actually 110 people in your instance though? The areas are zoned to spread out server load.

No, not in my instance.  Still ya kinda expect to see other people in a MMO even one instanced as much as this.  On Tatooine the isolation is just more pronounced, or at least it's been that way for me.

Imperial Agent over here.
For the most part, the questing experience is fairly similar across all classes in a faction. We all go to the same planets and the same areas on the planets. SO I also had to cross long stretches of sand dunes.

But the Imperial Agent story line is pretty cool and I'm enjoying it a great deal. It's deals with a terrorist ground trying to attack the Empire and as the Imperial Agent I have to go to various planets to destroy the various terror cells so I can take on the terrorist leader.

There's some good twist moments and I'm having a lot of fun playing this evil as shit agent who is kinda not good at her job and just goes around killing everyone.

surprisingly the storyline does indeed continue. I thought from there I simply would be going to planets on my own for regular questing, but it there's still a plot thread moving me from place to place. I'm currently on Taris, which is a shithole.

Every single other MMO sees group/guild chat as a "one to few" conversation option that can be policed by players. You can kick some idiot out of a group or boot them from a guild, for example. It makes no sense for them to go after players like this.

Title: Re: i'm gonna play: Star Wars: The Old Republic
Post by: fistfulofmetal on January 01, 2012, 09:54:09 PM
there's some annoying balance issues in the late game i'm finding. my character is a sniper and pretty much all of my damage dealing attacks require me to be static in cover. however nearly every elite class boss i encounter at the end of the quest line are melee types that do massive damage when they get up close. so i basically have to always hope that my companion will survive long enough for me to kill off over half their health so that when they turn the attack on me i can recover enough energy to actually take them down.

this has not been possible in many of the late game bosses. and they're nearly all jedi.

really the only way i see i can defeat them is to bring a friend in with me (which is getting difficult because i'm higher level than all of them) or come back after i've leveled a bit higher.

secondly, there has been 2 specific situations where i have used one of my abilities and they have caused the boss to fly off a ledge into some pit. frustratingly this does not result in them dying. instead they either have glitched and continued to attack me (through the floor) or glitched the entire quest which forces me to leave and come back.

i really need to submit that as a bug because it's really poorly designed.

that all being said. i'm still enjoying the game. the storyline is getting good. i've created my "legacy" now nearing level 40.

also: space combat missions are piss easy and net some serious XP. the last one I did was 20k xp, and since you're in your ship when you do it, you get double that. it's ridiculous.

edit: btw. i checked. i've put over 72 hours into the game so far.  :o

Loving my BH, most of the time I can just not give a shit about evil or good and just go where the money is. FUCK YEAH.

Went to Alderaan today, storyline is pretty interesting for both my class quest and the world story. I'm also getting pretty lucky in flashpoints (when I can find a fucking tank on my server) and usually getting like two pieces of gear a run so I'm pretty happy with that.

So I was seemingly swimming in credits up until level 40 but from then on I've been one broke ass bitch on my climb to 50.  The speeder upgrade at 40 killed me, along with the upgrade and ridiculous repair costs.  Seems so weird to me how the game almost punishes you when you hit the 40 mark.   I'd sell mats but everyone seems to be doing it so the market is shit.

Anyone know any good crew skill combos now that slicer is nerfed?

Title: Re: i'm gonna play: Star Wars: The Old Republic
Post by: Hitler Stole My Potato on January 17, 2012, 08:59:37 PM
Training prices, repair costs, fucked up crafting economy.....

There's something very rotten in Denmark.

My slicing is at 400 and is basically worthless after the nerf.  Tried synthweaving but that got me nowhere. Same with Artifice.  Nothing really sells for that much on the GTM, especially when compared to the crafting costs.  Wasting all this money on crafting items and RE for different mats only to wind up with items that will sell for thousands less than it took to go through the entire process.  Maybe I'll just fuck everything and go Biochem.  At least I can actually use those.

I don't know.  I'm having a lot less fun with the game now that I'm slogging through the 40's.  I realize that it's a MMO and supposed to be played for a long time but it's kind of ridiculous the way it's set up now.  Bioware's going to have to reduce some of these expenses to make the game less of a freaking chore at higher levels.

doesnt HAVE to be played for a long time- you could always quit while youre ahead. Did that with Star Trek Online. What I played of that was a lot of fun. I quit before it was obvious it would soon stop being fun. Unfortunately unlike STO- TOR's story doesnt sum up quickly. Im basically playing a Jedi Consular and Imperial Agent- I play the game like a single player RPG and bounce between the two. Ill prolly drop the game in a few months which is fine.

Currently at 48 and closing in on 49 fast. Corellia is pretty great. HUGE change of pace from the last dozen planets. Story is picking up big time. I just got this sick new ability called Orbital Strike which is GOD TIER.

50 HERE I COME

Got my 50 earlier today.   The marauder skill set doesn't seem as interesting or as useful as some of the other classes out there.  Sure I can lay down the damage but I'm totally dependent on getting in close and it seems like everyone has tons of kickback and freeze abilities negating a lot of what I can do.  It seems kind of a useless class at the end.

And the medium armor in this game sucks ass.  All the good stuff is either light or heavy.  Medium is the Jan Brady of armor selection.

And save your money fistful.  50 is expensive.  I had nearly 800k by the time I hit it and now I'm down to 200k after buying everything I needed.

 :(

i just blew a bunch of money on a speeder

what kind of stuff?

Well let's see, the level 3 speeder upgrade was 300k and the Dark V special speeder was 100k.  Then there's a bunch of abilities that all the sudden are able to be upgraded at level 50 as well.  Obviously you can skip all that shit if you want but the trainer part is definitely useful.

I started selling armor parts on the GTN and have been able to make a lot money doing that.  I finally found something on this lame ass server I'm on that people are willing to pay out of their asses to buy.  That and some clown has been actually buying all my companion gifts I put up there.  I'm gonna keep feeding him them until he realizes how fucking dumb he is.....hopefully not too soon though!

Now that I've reached end game stuff with this character, I'm kinda torn on whether or not to resub.  I wouldnt mind doing the pvp grind but I'm on such a dead server.....really wish they'd merge some of these so it doesn't seem so quiet.  I'm tempted to start all over with a new character on a different server but man....I hate giving up that progress.  Wish there was a way to do a transfer. :/

when i reach 50 i'll probably start a Republic character so i can see the other side of content. i won't be touching PVP because i've heard horror stories from other IA Snipers and how they are worthless in PVP.

just hit 50.

so any quests i do now are pretty much wasted XP? that kinda sucks.

Yep.  Any questing now is for coin or legacy xp, which doesn't mean shit at the moment.  Kinda sucks you don't get valor or something.  I've got a whole planet left to finish my class questline but I won't get any xp for doing it.  Makes the process incredibly dull and gives me zero incentive to play it.

The only thing left at 50 is the pvp grind, which in itself is irritating.  Why even have mercenary commendations?  You can't earn them.  You have to buy them with warzone commendations. 30 for 10 of 'em.  To get the good gear you need to buy champion bags that cost 800 merc and 800 warzone commendations.  Why not just triple the cost instead of forcing us to go to a shop and exchange them for swtor's equivalent of space bucks?  Seems kind of a worthless secondary currency that's in there for no good reason.

I was considering not resubing but looks like they charged me on Monday for another 3 months.... :duh.  Well, at least I've got my founder coin. :teehee

Four hour maintenance on a weekend. Wow.

They've also disabled posting to the forums so people can't bitch about it:

on the last leg of my class quest. it's fucking annoying. they throw a level 50 elite at me with three other enemies as well. i can see no way i would be able to take on this scenario on the first go.  :-\

Most class quests are like that. Kill the two non-elite mobs, let the elite kill you, res on the spot to kill the elite with full health.

in this case there were about 5 other enemies each other 4k health so i would have had to die and respawn about 2 times. so instead i just died then walked by them in stealth

now i'm done with my character and on ilum. flagged for pvp... with quests that are meaningless. this is the first time i've ever hit the level cap in an mmo....

It's all apart of Lucas' plan to take over the gaming computer market with his own official Star Wars rig

Last patch killed the game for anyone with AMD cards. It overheats the card causing your PC to shut down. Does it on the last five driver releases. People are screaming on the forums and BioWare isn't really responding to anything about it.

People have tried calling tech support about it and end up being put on hold and then disconnected.

lol now there are people with Nvidia cards claiming the last patch is actually frying the cards like SC2 did early on.

Anybody else playing this right now? Because I am. So, far I really like it, since it's basically a singleplayer RPG with MMO tacked on, thanks to tons of cutscenes and letting me be awesomely bad all the time during missions that sometimes almost feel like real RPG missions. I would love it more without the MMO stuff though, because honestly, I hate MMOs. But I'll keep playing this anyway.

I'm playing it as well. It's pretty decent. I do have to wonder why they made this an mmo. As an mmo it basically feels like a way easier WoW and the mmo part basically amounts to "oh you see people on the field". I mean that's pretty much it. Most of the group stuff is instanced, so I mean it basically feels like a IDK a Diablo game.

Also I feel like the World Design is terrible. Dosen't really feel like an online world like WoW did to me.

What's your name on TOR? I'll add you and maybe we can play together or something I don't know.

Mine's the same as here on The Bore, minus the space.

My character name is Lunamarie .why? I don't know. Valeria(Conan's wife in the movie) was taken. Is that what you are asking for.
