Matthew Crawley's bitch face is in fact another example of Downton Abbys meticulous attention to detail.  Before the birth of cinema, bitch faces were extremely common.  It was only when faces became magnified on the silver screen that society became more aware of their facial gestures and started to "train" them in a way that did not indicate a total bitch attitude, which as most of us are aware, is the common prevailing attitude in any given society.  Matthew Crawley's bitch face stands at the cusp of cinemas birth, before the cinema could claim any individual stars and faces to fixate upon.  It represents a simpler time, when you could read someones bitchy attitude straight off their face, and also stands as a testament to the shows historical accuracy.

I can't get myself to invest in season 2.  I'm sure it has merit but I'm not really seeing the imperative for extending the narrative beyond the fairly tight first season.  Season 2 is really more about the war than about Downton which means a less focused ensemble and more melodrama.  Maybe I'll just skip to the last episode and watch the Christmas special.

S2 is certainly about Downton, just the war's impact on it; the war is a central plot line, and was inevitable given the timeline of the show. In many ways it details a struggle for the future and legacy of Downton, just as S1 did. In S1 we see the noble family as well as their servants rebelling against the notion that a commoner outsider will one day rule over them. And while they come to grips with it throughout the season, in S2 we see the struggle magnified as Matthew's mother asserts her power and influence. All while each of the Crowley daughters goes through character development that moves them further from the protective wings of their family/house. I thought all that was compelling.

The problem with S2 was the increase in melodrama and subplots. Outside of Bates there aren't many demanding (or compelling) subplots in S1. S2 has a host of stories that don't seem to be relevant, and often feel ridiculously soap opera-esque. That being said, I really enjoyed S2 for what it was, and was quite emotionally invested.

The story was always going to expand, I just hope S3 does things smarter.

They basically absorb Matthew and turn him into one of them. He has like no personality now.

Season 3 should end in a menage a trois of Matthew, Robert and Bates. Perhaps with the ladies watching and placing bets on the first o-face.
