Title: Black Bore
Post by: Billy Rygar on January 04, 2012, 04:50:33 PM
I was wondering today while driving and listening to the radio and an ad came on and I was like "this is just blatant pandering to black folks" and I got faux offended like we white liberal types tend to do and I was wondering if you're ever like, "this is blatant pandering to white folks" and get faux offended.

Everything is an attempt to pander to middle class white folks outside a few exceptions so it's hard to get offended.

If anything it's more offensive when they pander to people of color. Like, oh look, niccas sure do love them mcdonalds so let's become the ghetto sponsor of black people.

Well, since I kinda want a career in advertising, I try to take notice of ads being shown on tv and else where and...a lot of times, I'm not sure if it's a generational gap or if they're trying to appeal to white hipsters, but...those Levi ads? With the fireworks and random euphemisms for a patriotic America? Or that Miracle Whip commercial where they try to make fuckin' Miracle Whip hip or trendy?

THAT SHIT.

Who are they trying to appeal here? I can't ever decide.

Yeah, that's what I figured.  But do you ever feel like companies go out of their way to appeal to our whiteness?  Just curious.

It's mainly what Himuro said. 99% percent of stuff is geared/marketed toward white people so I'm oblivious to it at this point. Its the norm rather than the special exception. I don't mind stuff marketed or designated toward black people as long as it isn't appealing to the most dumb aspects of "black culture". But then I feel the same way about anything marketed toward any subculture whether it be geek culture, youth culture, etc. I don't like nerd shit that overly revels in its nerdiness. Which is why I tend to not find internet meme culture funny as an example.

Hey Himu, how do you feel about the Safe Auto insurance commercial here in Houston (I don't know if it's outside of Houston too or just a local thing).  The one where they get the loud black lady and they patronize her about her loud blackness.

"You're uninsured dude, pick up the phone"
*She's so loud that everyone in the office gets quiet*
Fat White Dude: Gracie sure has a way with words doesn't she?

The racial tones in that commercial always make me shudder a little.  I just imagine some fat smug white dude thing it's just heeeeeeeelarious

For what its worth when I watched Paranormal Activity recently for the first time for a second I thought only white people could like this movie. Because the couple were the two most annoying people ever.

But then hey we got Tyler Perry comedies on TBS. So it all evens out.

Seinfeld is actually pretty color-blind. A lot of the issues it brings up are universal.

Also, Tyler Perry is proof that racial relations are working, because you can't have equality if everyone's culture doesn't bring total shit to the table.

I honestly miss 80's black films. Stuff like The Last Dragon, Coming to America...light hearted films that just star black folks, but not in an ironic way. I think Black Dynamite was the last film of its kind I've seen in years. At least since maybe The Wood or something.

What stuck out to me lately was a car commercial in which a white bitch is talking about her white SUV and says, "Some guys even asked me if it had 20s! But I don't know what that means, hahaha!"

I mean look at something like The Big Bang Theory. I've never seen an episode of it ever so I have nothing pro or con against that show but its essentially black face for nerds from what I've seen from how they promote it. So it happens to every sub-culture.

i hate to trivialize the complete and utter blight on american culture and racial awareness that was "black face," but when it comes to "the big bang theory" it's a rather apt comparison -- big bang theory's whole appeal lies in portraying nerds as heavily stereotyped alien others that are only approachable through laughing at (and occasionally with) their disconnect from the monocultural majority, and of course they require a sympathetic culturally straight white person to mediate for them. unfortunately, many nerds i know like the show because they laugh at the equivalent of "fried chicken" and "kumbayah" gags: references to obscure pieces of sci-fi trivia or scientific accomplishments, BECAUSE IT'S SOOO TRUE HAN SHOT FIRST, ISN'T QUANTUM MECHANICS AWESOME!!!! AH HURRRRRR.

I've never seen the show so I honestly don't really have anything against it nor can I really speak intelligently to it. A lot of people I know really like the show and have suggested I watch it which eventually I will get around to I'm sure. I'm guessing its harmless.

From the outside looking in it seems pretty stereotypical of what mainstream society projects as "nerds" but then like I said I haven't seen it. Even if it is, its a mainstream network show. They tend to deal in broad stereotypes and generalizations so its not like its out of place.  I was more aiming for the point that general society tends to stereotype everything anyway.

I've seen a couple of episodes of it and it's about as bland and generic as HIMYM or Two and a Half Men.  It's not as bad as New Girl or whatever with Zooey but it's just a whole lot of meh

I work at the 3rd largest defense contractor in the world and there's a couple people there who are a bit reminiscent of Sheldon...

If I could compare myself to anyone on that show it'd be Howie. Girl-crazy with an extremely overbearing mother. At least the chick he dates on the show is cute...
