I haven't seen any of these movies yet but Gary Oldman winning an Oscar would be cool (he won't)

I should watch The Artist.

Oscar noms are always this great moment when you realize that there are Hollywood movies out there featuring prestigious actors that no one will ever see.

Post by: Robo on January 24, 2012, 01:11:22 PM
I always end up seeing most of the nominated flicks eventually purely out of curiosity and because Netflix.

I doubt I'll ever watch Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close from every horrid I've read about it (unless compromising for lots of sex), but nearly everything else is already on the queue.

I should watch The Artist.

You should. It's really well done.

Wow at Bridesmaids getting two nominations!
Title: Re: The 84th Academy Awards
Post by: Bebpo on January 24, 2012, 01:25:54 PM
Worst list I've seen in years.  So many movies/people snubbed.

Drive got ONE nomination for Sound Editing, wtf.  It has like 92-93% at RT whereas Extremely Whatever has 48% and it's nominated for Best Picture.  Refn got robbed on Director, and Cliff Martinez got robbed for his soundtrack on both Drive & Contagion.  Michael Fassbender doesn't get a single nomination despite being in like 4 major films in 2011 and being excellent every time.  Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross don't get nominated for best score for Dragon Tattoo. etc...etc...

2011 was a good year for films.  This is just a really poor representation of the year's quality.

The only good thing about the list is all the Hugo noms even though no one saw Hugo and it bombed hard.  Academy loves Scorsese and rightfully so.

BAFTA noms > Oscar noms
Title: Re: The 84th Academy Awards
Post by: HyperZoneWasAwesome on January 24, 2012, 01:31:03 PM
The Artist is good, but if it carries all the major noms and gets best picture I'd throw a fit.
well, better that then The Help or Extremely Shitty and Incredibly Schmaltzy.  I'm pulling for Tree of Life and Hugo, but like that's going to happen.

BAFTA noms > Oscar noms

Just looked at the BAFTA list and yeah, it's pretty much what I expected the Oscar list to look like this year.  Much better.

I still need to see The Artist, Midnight in Paris, The Tree of Life, and A Dangerous Method, and Blue Valentine for 2011's set.

Haven't seen The Descendants, but not interested in seeing it at all for some reason and I like Clooney movies.

I wanna see the Descendants simply because Jim Rash was a co-writer.  I like that man.

Still need to see quite a few movies.  The Artist in particular.  Looks so fucking cool.

I think there's legit issues surrounding Andy Serkis since it isn't so cut and dry as to what % of the acting is him and what % is the CG.

though i'm not sure i'd go out of my way to see half the films repped by acting nods anyway. surely  'my week with marilyn' was something michelle williams had to get out of her system, right?

Of all these movies I've only seen Tree of Life, but I really want to see Midnight in Paris (cause Cotillard), The Artist, and Hugo.

The Descendants, Moneyball, and War Horse eventually, maybe, Netflix or something.  The Help never.  Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close maybe/masochist viewing. I tried that with Eat Pray Love once; lasted until the Eat/Italy part.

I can't stand movies like The Descendants but I really liked this movie.

George Clooney is really starting to show his age.  Tom Cruise, who is about a similar age, looks years younger.  Must be the placenta facials he gets.

The fact Hugo got the most nominations is pretty awesome at least.  Glad for lots of Midnight in Paris love as well. The more I think about it  Midnight in Paris is one of my favorites of 2011. Finally saw The Artist, the other week. It's good but I still feel the most of its award wins is due to the silent film novelty value rather than it being a great film. The dog though fucking owned the entire movie.

It seems like these films films about the compassion of white people towards black people come out every other year and win awards or make money; think The Blind Side. Outside of that, the only other big black films are Tyler Perry bullshit. I've heard Red Tails has some great action scenes but the acting/drama is wooden.

Oh well. Can't wait for Django Unchained.

Yup, my mom and her friends (black and white).

I understand why people don't want to talk about segregation, but I don't like the idea of whitewashing it or turning it into some simple fairy tale. This goes back to my theory (well, it's not mine, I'd imagine other people have pointed it out) that part of the reason Obama has benefited from such high personal favorable numbers and managed to avoid being sunk by the Rev Wright stuff is not just because he's mixed, but because he has no ties to the Civil Right's era. Interestingly his people have done a good job of ensuring he's not connected at the hip with the more controversial 60s/70s figures like Jackson or Sharpton

Totally agreed, they're divisive idiots. And I think it was definitely a good idea that they were held at a distance. Jackson supported Obama, Sharpton supported Clinton. And of course Jackson had the "cut his nuts off" thing which probably helped Obama even more lol

I liked The Help but didn't think it was some great pro civil rights film.  I haven't heard feedback from black people about The Help but after reading this article, I could certainly see why some would be offended.  The lack of strong black male characters is certainly glaring.  Although I don't agree with all of his points, it's always nice to see Hollywood being called out for its subtle racism through stereotyping.

My main qualm with The Help is that its popularity screwed up Jessica Chastain's nomination for The Tree of Life which would have given her a far better chance at winning an Oscar (although she did look fantastic in The Help).

It's nice to see something different win.  Maybe Hollywood would stop pumping out so many formulaic films.

Seriously? It's a period romance about a silent film actor with almost no spoken dialog. If that's not pure Oscar-bait, I don't know what is.

And it was distributed by the Weinsteins.

How many silent films have been made in the last 20 years though?  It might be Oscar bait but it was also a very likely bust.

I felt extremely indifferent to all the nominees and winners, except for Meryl's speech. A lot would say her sincerity is questionable, but it was really sweet nonetheless.

Only thing I felt strongly about was tree of life winning cinematography.  The only other acceptable option would've been Moneyball, just to give Wally Pfister another one, but that wasn't even nominated.

I mostly didn't watch after that.  Just listening to it, the show seemed to be: shit happening, Natalie Portman spoiling The Artist, other shit happening.

Didn't watch it, but glad Hugo won some stuff.

Hugo & Drive were my two favorites from 2011.  Though I still need to see The Artist.

And yeah, Tree of Life not winning cinematography is lolz.

What won best score?

I need to see Hugo so bad, but that's one movie that I'd feel weird watching at home I think.  From what I've read, you owe it to yourself to experience it in a theater.

Definitely see it in 3D.  Everyone I know whose only watched it in 2d has been less than impressed to say the least.  I thought it was good in 2d, but fantastic in 3d.

The Artist doubled its budget from American theaters alone.

There is no twist.

And no, that doesn't happen.

The Artist was a fun romantic comedy nothing more, the fact is they gave it all these awards just because it didn't have any dialog which I find pretty pathetic.

Midnight in Paris was the same Woody Allen movie that we've had a million times, but this time it was in Paris. Good movie, but I liked how he was branching out with Match Point and Vicki Christina.

Or the fact that it cleverly used its lack of dialog to carry the film.  It's silence is a plot device, not just a choice by the filmmakers.

The Artist is fine but I find it hilarious because it was semi-obviously made as a tongue-in-cheek pastiche but ended up getting taken deadly seriously. I'd keep my mouth shut and take the statues, too!

I really need to see the second OSS film, as the first one is fecking great.  I think The Artist winning the big one ain't right, but its a pretty good 2nd or 3rd choice.

Match Point was freaking awesome and totally unexpected from a Woody Allen film.  Who'd have thought that Woody was capable of making a thriller?

I enjoyed Midnight despite it being similar to many other Woody Allen films.  The cinematography and score were spectacular and I like how the romance was mostly about something other than love between people.

Isn't the whole point of The Artist that it's formulaic?

Actually, the main villaness is a true redhead.  Emma Stone is really a blonde.  Also, Chastain wore a blonde wig to cover her real red hair.
