Title: Do you guys still have cable/satellite?
Post by: Rman on January 26, 2012, 01:04:06 PM
It seems that as cable continues to get challenged by netflix/hulu/itunes/amazon that many are just opting to ''cut the cord'' as it were.  I haven't had cable for 5 years and I don't miss it all; however, sports coverage can be hit or miss due to the major leagues are getting contracts with TBS/ESPN.

We have cable here, mostly due to it being included with our apartment.

I have satellite. There's too much good tv to not have it.

We had cable for a few months until we realized we were still only watching what Netflix sent and what was on netflix streaming.  And the only stuff we watched from cable was premium shows on HBO.  I'll download the bits and pieces I miss elsewhere.  We generally watch movies instead of tv shows so we're not missing that much.  I haven't had cable in about 2 years now.  Everytime I think about getting it I change my mind when I start comparing prices.  Yikes.  I know I won't watch it to justify 70 bucks a month or something.

That's why you get direct tv.

We have an AT&T U-Verse package that includes Internet and "cable" together, but I have considered ditching it.  I only watch a few shows that I'm pretty sure are on Hulu Plus (and I can always just get them from the INTERNET STORE) or stream shit anyway.

My wife likes to keep Bravo on 24/7, however, so I don't know if it would fly with her.  I swear that channel replays the same five shows (three "Real Housewives" programs and some cooking shit) over and over and over again every week.

We have Comcast and pay way too much for it, but we keep doing it.

I mostly watch premium shows.  The cheapest offer they have to include them is 34.99 but it's only free for 3 months.  After that I have to pay individual full price for them.  83.99 is the cheapest to have them included for the full 12 months.

Fuck that.  I'll continue downloading and buying physical media of the stuff I like.

I'd download hbo and showtime shows but they watch your ass like a hawk.

Thankfully hbo has their own stream site.

Icefilms is slowly coming back, after the megaupload shit. They're using rapidshare to stream things now, but it'll take awhile for the popular shows to re-appear on the site

The problem with icefilms is that they lack a captions/subtitles option.

Wish I didn't.  I think my roommate is afraid of bringing girls back and having no distractions to fill the moments when he has nothing to say.

I've been getting along fine without it for a decade plus.   :tophat

My wife is really good at calling Comcast and bitching until they lower our rates for a few months.

I'd download hbo and showtime shows but they watch your ass like a hawk.

Yes they do. I downloaded an episode of Big Love a few years ago and got a letter right away.

I can't wait for HBO Go to be on PS3, it has more content than HBO OnDemand does on Comcast.

Yes, Comcast, but I wouldn't if I were the only one paying for it. The only thing I use it for is sports, really. Most of my TV watching these days is done via Netflix or piracy.

The mandatory tiered package deals kill me. You have to pay for far too many useless channels just to have access to the ten or fifteen that aren't airing garbage 24/7.

Out of curiosity, where from? I've downloaded an obscene amount of HBO series over the years and keep expecting to receive a warning sooner or later but it's been all good thus far

I can't remember where (this was back in 2006), but it was a torrent.

HBOgo wont be your life saver its only the same stuff thats available from on demand from comcast.

I'm paying way too much for my comcast too almost $210 a month. We got two room dvr, hbo starz showtime cinemax (all free for two years), 50mb blast, and phone service.

I no longer have cable or satellite. I can't pick up NBC in Springfield, which sucks because I was thinking about throwing a Super Bowl party. Other than that, Netflix carries me through most of my TV/film needs. In fact, thinking about picking up Hulu Plus as well.

Hm.  I constantly download HBO and other premium series and I've received a lot of letter but none for HBO content.

Really? I swear I saw shows and seasons that weren't available on OnDemand.

Does complaining about prices even work? I've been thinking of switching from Comcast internet recently. I had the $30/month service, and it recently went to like $44; I don't have cable, but I get basic channels like ABC which is fine with me. I'm thinking of either downgrading or switching

It might just be my area but the selection for HBO go and Cinemax's beta are exactly the same offerings as those on OnDemand they usually stay a few weeks longer than those on OnDemand though. Which is nice if you miss something.

I've never paid a cent for a cable or satellite subscription.

Netflix is more than enough.

Yeah it usually works.  But for that I don't know if it will.  It depends on a lot of things like your package, how long you've been a customer, etc.

Mine just went from 44 to 54.  I have Comcast.

It's funny how they push the landline when no one really needs them anymore.
