The next Assassin's Creed is set to feature a new protagonist and switch setting to the American Revolution, a source close to the project has told CVG.

The exciting switch to the 18th century conflict will mark the series' 'biggest instalment yet', according to Ubisoft, and our insider indicates the game will be publicly showcased before the end of the company's fiscal year on March 31

Interesting.

They could have went with far more interesting places though. I could give two shits about the American Revolution. If it were up to me, I'd have them go way, way back. Like in ancient Egypt or the Three Kingdoms era China.

Or hell, the French Revolution is far more interesting than the American Revolution.

The more modern that series gets the more odd its going to be to see the series staples of that game. I'm not sure that series works without radical changes as you get towards more modern times.

yeah, hiding as an assassin makes a lot of sense in ancient rome or whatever in highly dense cities. which is why I suggested the places like paris, egypt, and chang'an in my previous post. What dense cities did America have in the American revolution?

This series has no problems jumping around in time, next step should be jumping around various mechanics. There is just one condition--main character must remain badass assassin

Deus Ex time........Deus Ex mechanic

While it's been less important in the later games, hiding in plain sight had been important in AC1.  You could still blend with crowds in AC2, and there was the one masquerade sequence.

It'd be cool to adopt some Hitman mechanics into it.  But yeah, going modern with the changing architecture can be problematic for scaling buildings.  It could have a clear division between the street level and rooftops.  I wouldn't want it to be Batman Arkham City or anything, but gadgets could become more important.  Creating ziplines and whatnot.

Actually, futuristic would end up working better than modern.  An Assassin's Creed in the Fifth Element world, jumping between flying cars and stuff, could be cool.

there were big cities during the american revolution, you have to remember there hadn't been any expansion west yet so the population was more concentrated

philadelphia (pop 25,000), boston, new york, new jersey (which is a state, but had a pop of 120,000), charleston, etc.

guns were dogshit at the time, hence the whole lining up in rows and shooting at each other, so i doubt they'll play that much of a factor

still think WWI would be more interesting

I wasn't sure of the population size of those cities during those times. But hey, with a population of 25,000 it could probably work.

Yeah, but it won't happen. If they're going for the American Revolution, why bother going to those places in later years? If they're continuously going forward, I mean.

I'd like to see Meiji-era Bakumatsu Japan. It's the perfect place for assassins. You'd fight ninjas and samurai!

Japan is played out.  You want a sandbox meiji era game?  You have Way of the Samurai.  Or Yakuza Kenzan.

Would rather have locations that haven't been done in sandbox worlds before.  New places/eras to explore.

Post by: cool breeze on January 29, 2012, 02:00:18 AM
I think Japan could be interesting since those games you've mentioned aren't necessarily open world in the same way as the Ass Creed games.  Plus the production cost would be a billion times more than whatever Acquire's meager amount is.

I wouldn't mind Paris again for that reason.  The Saboteur did it.  Ubi-whatevercity could do it better.

London would be neat too, but Eidos Montreal is on the new Thief and I've high hopes for that.

Found this on another site from a few months back. American Revolution could be really cool if done like this:

Quote
A guy who e-mailed me and said he saw Assassin's Creed III in action several months ago, but who I couldn't confirm was legit: (I'm paraphrasing what he told me.) The game is in America, during the Revolutionary War, starring a half-American/half-Native American assassin who meets George Washington and builds up a homebase farm of some sort. He mentioned a mission involving tracking redcoats on a frozen lake (the ice could be weakened so they fell through) and a level involving three-mast ships in grand combat.

Post by: chronovore on January 31, 2012, 10:25:11 PM
I could go for that; the character design could be really neat as well. Seriously, I liked Altair a bunch, and Ezio was great, but I am ready for a new assassin, after all those other great assassin lords with whom Ubi has constantly teased us.

"I'm working on electricity.  Please hold onto this cable and let me know if you feel anything"
:lol

Potentially so much more pithy than Leonardo da Vinci.

The American Revolution is a time period that really hasn't been explored in games outside of strategy sims on the PC. They could do a lot with it. We could experience the Boston Tea Party first hand. Have the ability to set ambushes for British convoys as they travel through the forests. Since AC usually takes place over a period of time you could see the different seasons. The lake would be frozen over in the winter. I would honestly Day 1 just for the setting  :D

I like it.  So going by that flag we won't be seeing the Boston Tea Party or kicking ass in the name of Crispus Attucks?  Maybe the story will span a few years but it would be quite a change to the seemingly stagnant (in regards to time) gameplay of the first games.  Oh well.  I really like the style of the poster.  It seems like it will appropriately cheesy in the "American Fuck Yeah!" way.

I just want a fleshed out world to explore with multiple cities and a story that moves around.  These 1 city spinoffs where they pack 300 activities into a single area don't feel like the real thing.

I do and the combat sucked which Brotherhood streamlined with the kill chains but then I always thought AC 2 was a somewhat over-rated game. I think people reacted to it in such a manner because it was simply the game the first one should have been not that I didn't enjoy 2 complaints aside.

They've actually done it for like a decade. I remember a Tomb Raider cover from the 90's. There were some bad around the 2000s as well.

Might have changed with the wrap-around covers though. No idea there.

It's Alex Ross, he's a big enough name that it shouldn't really matter. And whoever referred to it as fanart is high.

Okay, so I realize that news sites are already leaking info related to the leaked GameInformer article on Assassin's Creed III, so I suppose I will do the same here, even though it may not be quite right... Though it's either us or them.
Here is a basic rundown of the new features in the upcoming GameInformer article, to be released next week:

- The new Assassin is the son of a Native American woman and a British soldier. His calls himself Connor, but his birth name is Ratohnhaké:ton. Born into the Mohawk, he eventually crosses paths with the Assassins in his search for righteousness.

- Connor is quiet and stoic, letting actions speak for words rather than conversing with others. In contrast to Ezio, Connor is a freedom fighter who acts in the name of justice rather than on personal revenge.

- Settings will include Boston, New York and a large countryside. The countryside will be the setting of about 1/3 of the game, and will be the location of many events during the game. The countryside will be about 1.5 times as big as Rome in Brotherhood.

- The protagonist will fight on the American side, with primary allies George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and Charles Lee. However, this does not mean that the Americans are the good guys and the British are the bad guys. Templars are everywhere…

- There will be seasons in the game, meaning that the sun will shine during summer and the landscape will be covered in snow during winter.

- Fighting and stealth will be completely re-innovated, with Connor being compared to a “predator”. The player will be able to climb trees and other natural elements, and dual-wielding weapons such as a dagger and a mohawk is now also an option.

- Animals will be present in the woods, like deer and bears. The player will be able to kill them and pelt their skins, to sell them later with the reformed economic system of the game.

- There will be puzzles similar to The Truth, only they will not be given by Subject 16.

- Desmond will go into the new Animus 3.0 and will find himself going into “significant events”.

- 100% sync in memories returns, though this time you will be rewarded when you complete memories to 100%. Checkpoints will also be introduced to mission replay, meaning you don’t have to replay an entire mission to get that 100% sync.

- The Brotherhood, or Assassins Guild, will return in some form, albeit differently than we have seen before.

There will be no more Mercenaries, Thieves, Courtesans, Romani or other factions, but there will be a replacement for them.

- Den Defense will not return.

nah, most likely 360 shots with console ordered to render at some insane res and then downsampled
If anything these shots show how badly we need next gen, this looks like typical Ass Creed engine to me

If people are really really impressed by this, then next gen consoles(including Weeeooo) will blow their socks off.

did you even play the other ones on pc?  this looks EXACTLY the same in terms of graphical quality

sounds fun tho; i hope the a.i. is much better as it would go a long way towards making better sneaking/chase scenes.  being able to kill 50 guards at once or hiding in a random hay bale killed any tension in the old games

I don't understand this series.  I never played any of them (I want to pick up the first for cheap soon), but is this, like...a time travel series where you play an assassin in different world conflicts?  I are confuserd

It's a video game where the main character you control is playing a video game.

You play a dude named Desmond in the 21st century.  There are magic chairs that allow him to revisit his ancestors' memories through genes and stuff.  One of his ancestors is the middle eastern dude from the first game, another is the Italian dude from the 2nd, and another is this native american in the 3rd game.  There's a lot of other spoilery stuff when you get down to it, but you're not time traveling.

I started playing Revelations last night to get hyped for this and having played 1/2 on X360 in 30fps and Brotherhood on PS3 in 30fps with tearing and drops, playing AC in 60fps (this is going to sound super stupid) on PC feels...wrong.

Like I've never ever thought I would agree with the consoletards about that "30fps cinematic" bs and I still need my 60fps and love it for FPS games and racing games and fighting games and puzzle games and everything.  But for some reason for a 3rd person adventure action game like this that's all movie like climbing and sneaking and killing, at 60fps it feels too smooth and like a videogame.  Like the in-game cutscenes feel like watching a theater movie on a tv at home with that fake 60fps effect that makes them look shitty.  I can't believe I'm saying this, but it's weird!

Think I might play AC3 on X360 because of this.  Wtf is wrong with me.

Didn't help that I've experienced more bugs in the first 90 mins of Revelations than in 3 full games of the franchise beforehand.  Revelations seems reaaaaally rushed and glitchy.

How much of that is gameplay and how much is automated? everything looks so seamless.  When he runs forward, takes out two guys, and take the horse.  When he runs into the building, vaults over the table, and dives out the other side.  Can you stop and inside the building, or would entering the building lock you into an animation.  If it's complete freedom, that would be pretty amazing.  Reminds me of that beyond good and evil 2 video.
