This is True Crime rebranded, right?
-
dunno
-
Square-Enix picked up True Crime Hong Kong after Activision decided to drop it. In that game you played a Chinese cop fighting Triads and stuff. Here you have a Chinese cop with some gang tattoos.
Would make sense, I guess

Sleeping Dogs is made by Vancouver-based developer United Front Games. Square Enix London Studios is supervising - the same office that looked after Batman: Arkham Asylum and Just Cause 2.
The publisher did not buy the rights to the brand IP, so always had to rename the game before release.
United Front is making LBP Kart too, according to some PS3 mag.Not that surprising since they made Modnation
-
You play undercover cop Wei Shen as he tries to take down the Hong Kong Triads. There's driving, close combat and shooting.
Square Enix London Studios general manager Lee Singleton said today Sleeping Dogs "has one of the best melee combat systems out there".
"It's super brutal with devastating takedown moves, and when added to UFG's proven heritage in driving games, a first class story and the vibrant backdrop of the Hong Kong underworld we get a fiery recipe with fun written all over it."
UFG executive producer Stephen Van Der Mescht added: "Working on Sleeping Dogs has been such a huge passion for the team at United Front Games and we're really pleased to be working with Square Enix London Studios.
"The extensive experience both our studios have in creating compelling openworld gameplay and rich and rewarding combat makes for a perfect partnership. Working together we can make sure that Sleeping Dogs is the most intense and immersive experience it can be."

WTF happened S-E? :-\
They finally decided to start making some good games?
-
FMV trailer :lol
-
yeah, those types of trailers do it for me [< lie. Deus Ex HR CG trailer :bow2]
I'm looking forward to this. Back, uh, two or three E3s ago when this game was shown it looked like it had some cool ideas. It had a parkour-ish system for on foot chases and too few games do foot chases, or do them well (LA Noire foot chases were so boring). Also, Hong Kong :rock

Yup, FFXIII-2 is a good game.

I didn't notice back in old videos that it had Batman AA's melee combat. Free running looks mildly Ass Creed-ish. It's funny how it's dipping into other games the same way the first True Crimes did, only updated for modern games. Back then you had Max Payne/Dead to Rights diving/shotdodge and slow-mo; now it's like a cover based shooter (reminds me of the James Bond Blood Stone game). Similarly the most original mechanic is the driving. I like that you can dive off a motorcycle or use slow-mo to shoot out tires and watch them flip and explode. It's not a knock or anything. I think Sleeping Dogs is looking cool and hope the PC version is alright enough to solve the technical problems from the video.
I'm wondering how that 'cop or triad' mechanic works. In the first game, you'd either shoot prostitutes beating on their pimp or cuff em, after using kung fu. I'm wondering if it's still based on action or if dialog options are gonna be in.

/watched 10 seconds of clip
Shenmue 3?
-
FMV trailer :lol
Honestly, it looks better and is more reasonable than prerendered graphics showing the theme of the game. At least it's not trying to trick anyone that it's gameplay.
Looks like a PS2 game... :P

Shenmue 3?
No, it looks like there is actual gameplay involved.

I imagine people at square enix watched the red dead redemption trailers and assumed that's how to market an open world game.
It's looking good. Combat is supposed to be Batman Arkham.
-
yeah, i'm liking this
-
I believe this game has been in development for four years and was originally pitched as an original IP before getting True Crimes thrown onto it, and then being sold off.
I want to say I watched an interview with someone from UFG who said that, but meh.

Sleeping Dogs has had a bit of a rocky development. It first started off as an original IP, however Activision (the owner at the time) decided that the True Crime name would help the game sell, so it then became True Crime: Hong Kong. Unfortunately, that project was eventually canceled, though it was adopted soon after by Square Enix during their spell of swooping up western companies and franchises.

Nice.

expected garbage - watched trailers - now interested!!!!
... well done?
-
Just watched the trailer, and it looks better than I expected. Seems like there's a decent amount of variety too which I wasn't expecting.
-
Wait what is this?
George St. Pierre (GSP) content: GSP’s signature “flying punch” Exclusive GSP outfit including T-shirts, headband and shorts The GSP outfit unlocks the “flying punch” and increases grappling and throwing damage
Hopefully it comes with GSP's accent too
-
GTA with more action, better combat, and cheesy asian accents? I'm in.
-
I liked True Crime Streets Of LA a lot, Streets of NY not so much.
The trailers look cool so I might rent it.
True Crime often comes up when this game is being discussed and I'd like to offer a reminder that this game was never a True Crime game. United Front started this project as a new IP, which Activision then slapped the True Crime branding on until they decided to kick it to the curb.
Outside of being thematically similar, I suppose, there is no connection between this game and the True Crime series. The more I see of this game, the more I feel like I should check it out. I'll probably just wait until later in the year to pick it up, as August is a busy month of gaming for me already.

Giant Bomb's video said they had mostly Chinese rap in the soundtrack.
I liked the Russian rap on GTA IV's soundtrack, but am not sure I need "Run Tsiem-Szi."
-
Giantbomb video has greatly increased my interests. Assuming of course that the pop in and scripting errors won't be in the final version. Might make this my open world game of the fall (usually only can handle 1 or 2 of those games a year)
