Title: Van Halen's New Album
Post by: Eel O'Brian on February 10, 2012, 09:33:29 PM
non-fans fuck off that way ------------------------------------->

truly surprised at how good it is

only one real stinker (tattoo), and for whatever fucking reason they chose to release that as the first single

apparently four of the songs are reworked versions from an early demo real, but they all pretty much sound like a VH cassette teleported here from 1985

dave sounds fine, he's nearly 58 so he can't break glass anymore but he almost gets there a few times

eddie van halen's corpse can still tear the fuck out of some guitar strings, and his tubby kid even does an okay job replacing former tubby bass player michael anthony, while alex van halen puts his parkinson's to good use on the drums

you really wouldn't expect dudes a shade away from 60 to put together something this heavy, and a couple of the songs dance around the edges of greatness, but seriously whoever picked 'tattoo' as the first single needs to be beaten unconscious

8/10 - 'As Is' > the entire van hagar catalog

Hm I'll have to check it out then. Tattoo was so horrible I wrote the entire thing off, but you've intrigued me

if you just want to sample a few, try

'blood and fire'
'as is'
'big river'
'stay frosty' (this is catching a lot of crap for being a riff on 'ice cream man,' but 1/3 of the way through it starts asskicking)

We had this playing at my work for a day or two and my basic response is 'yeah that's a VH album alright' except for Tattoo. What a stupid fucking song. :yuck My boss is more of an '80s rawk enthusiast than I and he noted that many of the songs are made of remnants from old stuff that didn't make the grade at the time or those old pieces were used as a launching pad at least.

Interesting. Despite preferring the Roth-era VH, I completely passed on this without giving it a fair shake after hearing the first single.

the rumor/joke is the van halen brothers picked tattoo as the first single just to show dave in the worst possible light, but it just smacks to me of some record exec thinking it was the most "radio-friendly" song reminiscent of hagar-era bullshit like "poundcake" because nothing else would play to "today's van halen fans"

It's better than crapola like Lana Del Rey.  I approve!

Oh wow, after hearing Tattoo (and seeing the video :lol) I was ready to write off the whole album.  Guess I'll have to give some of the other songs a listen.
