I replay JSR at least once a year, sir Thomas, and get every character in the process. I have played JSRF once, and have never been able to fully replay it. JSR knocks JSRFs shit.

Finally. Hope they put some real effort into the port.

Now the DC is one step closer to being obsolete. Too bad it still has a bunch of shooter that will never be ported again.

I played a bit of JSRF today on the 360.  It's still fun aside from some slowdown (not sure if that's due to emulation on the 360).
One thing I really hope they revise in the new HD JSR is the camera.  Please let me use the right thumbstick to control the camera instead of the outdated left trigger reset.

Title: Re: Jet Grind Radio XBLA
Post by: Himu on March 13, 2012, 03:38:43 PM
The time limits is why JSR is better. Including gangs/police/helicopters/tanks chasing you. JSRF's crappy arena style ruined all tension. The platforming and exploration in JSRF are better but JSR is more fun to play due to the time limit, scores rankings, and the fact it took skill.

Sorry you don't have the skill to keep up.

Blame Microsoft Sony.

If it was Sony I'm sure they'd want the Vita version launching alongside the PS3 one. Part of me thinks it was an intentional delay on SEGA's part as to avoid having to deal with people demanding a buy one get both scenario.

You're out of your fucking mind.  They actually improved the controls (right stick now controls the camera!) and the game still plays just as awesome as it did before.

The PS3 HD port looks fantastic and seems to be running at a stable 30 FPS.

this game is still not fun. bad controls, horrid camera. they shouldve just remade JSRF which actaully was fun and was atleast playable

You're out of your fucking mind.  They actually improved the controls (right stick now controls the camera!) and the game still plays just as awesome as it did before.

The PS3 HD port looks fantastic and seems to be running at a stable 30 FPS.

be quiet, this game served no purpose other than to give weirdos a reason to act superior. its always been a shite game with shite controls and shite gameplay mechanics. JSRF literally turned a shite game into a great game by fixing everything.

I really like JSRF. I clocked over 50 hours in it. But I have never really had an itch to replay it. I've replayed JSR, however, back to back, annually, for years and years. Infinite replay value, infinite amount of charm, arguably the best level design a game has seen, high challenge in later stages. Classic.

Oh man, Jet Set Radio HD looks BEAUTIFUL.

Almost looks like JSRF in terms of character model here, due to the higher resolution. Though it's missing JSRF's lighting and shadows.

Yeah, I can recommend it to someone.  They made use of the second analog stick for the camera, which is all the game needs on a modern controller.  Jet Set Radio is a fantastic platformer that has held up extremely well.

I hope this is just some dumb trolling on your part.

I watched some guy on youtube go through the first stage on the psn version.

Let's just say, I thought to myself,"this is probably Methodis"

"I'm jumping, I'M JUMPING! JUMP, JUMP!" *skates a low speed* "JUMP!"

*jumps into a bus* "I JUMPED!

*jumps onto rail* *misses* "?!?!?!?"

Tell you what, Methodis. When this drops on Steam, I will do you a favor and video cap me playing. Then you can suck my dick.

JSR HD's controls are much better than the Dreamcast versions. Half the problems with dreamcast version is the fact that the analog nub is utter shit.

I can do tricks that much faster and timely than in the DC version.

But of course, I'm sure you have never beaten JSR given your gaming skills have been weaned on Nintendo games.

The momentum and inertia isn't handled in what i would call a 'fun' way.  Differences in analog sticks aren't going to change that.  i can't remember if i ever beat jet grind radio, but i know i got up to one of the last levels before i had enough of it fiddliness.  The level i got to was uh.... i think there was central platform.  Around the platform were like spokes, but they were grind rails, i think they led to tag points and then you had to grind back to the central platform.

Oh and the level design is shit.  The motif and art and all that jazz is very endearing, but the actual part of the level design that dictates how the player gets around in an effecient manner?  Very sloppy.  Hell, there's one level with an alleyway that leads to an uncoded area and you fall forever, its not even hard to find.

A good case in point about the level design being flawed.  Most designers would make it so that walking up stairs in a rollerblading game was like a punishment that duly penalized you with much lost time by missing a jump or something like that.  Often in jet grind radio you just simply have to walk up some stairs in the due course of things.  Lame.

Boy I suck at this. Took me nearly 1hr to finish the tutorial, that 50x combo was pretty elusive for a while. Kept getting stuck in the mid 30s on the second lap.
Title: Re: Jet Set Radio: XBLA/PSN/PC/iOS/Android/Vita
Post by: Robo on September 20, 2012, 10:49:43 AM
That 50x grind combo is a more challenging course than anything you'll need to do in the Story, unless I'm forgetting something specific—and I think the tutorial itself is completely unnecessary when the Rival challenges are perfectly suited to show you everything you need to know on their own.  I didn't even know that turn-jump thing in the tutorial was a thing, never mind that it doesn't seem to work very well.

All you really need to know is the location of the sprays on each level.  The cops always arrive after you finish a set number of red tags, so consider doing the big tags on the ground levels first (because those are the ones the cops are gonna harass you over once they arrive), save all the small tags for last.

jet set radio is not from the last decade

it's from the decade before that

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000
Quote
The year 2000 was the first year of the 2000s decade. Popular culture holds the year 2000 as the first year of the 21st century and the 3rd millennium, due to a tendency to group the years according to decimal values, as if year zero were counted. According to the Gregorian Calendar this distinction falls to the year 2001, because the 1st century was retroactively said to start with year AD 1. Since the calendar has no year zero, its first millennium spans from years 1 to 1000, inclusively, and its second millennium from years 1001 to 2000. (See more at Millennium.)

But OK...one of the best games of the 90's and 2000's it is!   :D
Title: Re: Jet Set Radio: XBLA/PSN/PC/iOS/Android/Vita
Post by: Himu on September 20, 2012, 02:19:40 PM
Some tips:

1. Try to learn the level first, fail a couple of times but learn the level layout, where all the tags are.

2. When tagging, go for big tags first. In about every level, you are chased by someone or something, and if you have big tags out of the way, it'll be a lot easier for you.

3. Combo moves together for more points.

4. Spray green tags for bonus points, these are not required but increase your score.

5. Spraying x amount of red tags makes the cops and the woodwork come out, keep this in mind and remember how many tags you've sprayed at any given time. There will always be a warning on the cop feed for when they're going to go all out. Green tags are good for this in later levels like Fight or Flight, because you may find yourself having to high tail it for red tags when you're being chased by dudes who are shooting the ever living fuck out of you.

6. Each character has their benefits. Gum is faster than Beat, but Beat has more health. Gum can hold 15 spray cans whereas Beat can hold 20 cans. Gum can less cans but her sprays are more elaborate compared to Beat's more simple tag motions, meaning more points. This means that Gum will net you more points than Beat and she's harder to play. The stats to keep in mind are power (health), technique (speed/tricks), and graffiti (graffiti can count/more elaborate graffiti). Try each character to find their subtleties and your own preferences. Personally, my favorite character is Pirahna, because she uses elaborate tag motions which result in extremely high points if used in combo, but some people may prefer Yo-Yo, who uses simple tags, but is fast, and can score you big points in his own unique way. So if you're struggling on a stage, try it with another character to fit the stage.

7. Try to use everything to platform, escape and maneuver on.

8. Use boost only when trying to get speed. Think of it like Sonic the Hedgehog. JSRF has no momentum or speed to account for, JSR does. It's like Sonic 1 compared to Mario 1. Mario's sense of gravity and momentum is non-existent, just like in JSRF's; but in Sonic, you need to go back uphill and gain some speed in order to go through that loop. JSR works the exact same way, try to notice when and why I use boost in the vid I posted, this is crucial. Always boost before railing.

9. Enjoy. Have fun!

Giantbomb staff in regards to claim that they should quit games and get a new hobby because they're awful at vidya.

"@Himuro:

Dude I watched your video, and it made me realize why this game is so impossible for people. You're playing it like an adult. You get the cans. You spray the graffiti. You run from the cops. Stop it.

Fail. Keep pressing that jumping button. And don't stop. Try to jump from one place to another. It's fun. In that video you skate around the big round water holder. Don't do that. Grind around it. Jump on to the big round thing and wall ride. Have FUN. Who gives a fuck if you fail.

The game is insane and hard and janky. And trying to play it while being as cautious as possible is making the game way worse. The game was great as a kid because you played it so stupidly that it didn't matter if you failed. You had fun."

The graffiti icon in the selection menu is dark until you use it, so it's possible to tell what's left.  Still, going through that sluggish menu to change graffiti hundreds of times, potentially?  Terrible achievement idea.

For what it's worth in the half hour or so I tried it I didn't notice any of the hitches from the Giant Bomb video on the PC version. Of course I didn't get to where they were in the game so no idea if it's those levels or what.

The trigger on the 360 pad was throwing me back to horrible lingering mental pain from the Dreamcast version, but the rest of the controller is so much nicer to use.

For you achievement hunters who want to do most of everything on one run without having to dick around new game plus:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eB-f0JvQB_w

Here's a guide I made to getting Jet on Bantam Street with Cube. This is actually harder than you think because Cube and Combo's stats suck for getting Jet rank on Bantam. It wasn't a perfect run but you get the idea. I'll make one for a Jet ranking guide for Fight or Flight (hardest stage in the game) and Grind Square (second level in Chapter 2 of Combo and Cube) soon.

Only things I have left are to Jet every stage, which I probably won't do because Jet Crush is beyond frustrating, and finish the first run-through without anyone grabbing me, which I am definitely not going to do because that is a terrible achievement.

Love Shockers have the highest technique stat. use them. Jet Crush is bullshit and I dunno how I'm gonna Jet em.

It's hard for me to suggest doing Jet Crush unless you have Pots, Robo. Do you have Pots?

K Robo, I just Jet ranked half of the Jet Crush levels. Just pick someone fast and try to stay ahead of the person you're racing with the majority of the level. Try to tag it in 30-40 seconds and you should get Jet.

I have Pots.  Are you taking the same path the A.I. takes or did you find shortcuts for the ones you were able to get Jet on?

In the case of Shibuya, don't take the shortcut,  try to beat Beat at his own game using his own path until you get to the Love Shockers hill area, at least, where the tag is.

I'd have to replay the PS3 version I have, but the pop-in on Vita is pretty bad. Especially in the tutorial.  :lol

Also Himumu: Tips for momentum? I for the life of me can't grind the rails consistently.

Also Himumu: Tips for momentum? I for the life of me can't grind the rails consistently.

Watch this:

Don't hold the boost button. Boost gives you a five second or so boost, you hit it not like an accelerator but like a pump. Pump (hit LT to boost)... character slows down...Pump...slows down...pump. It's all in timing. Before you grind a rail, boost, and you will be momentum. Also, momentum is very gravity based. If you're going downhill you get insane speed, but going uphill is a battle. Try to use realistic use of physics and momentum. Only grind at full speed.

Also check out the beginning of this vid. See how I go in a circle to accumulate speed before grinding? There are a few speed tiers in JSR: basic slow skate, full speed without boost, boost, uphill, downhill, and via grind.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eB-f0JvQB_w

As for gaining speed on rails, here is a good example. Look at what I'm doing at 05:55 - 06:05. I start at a really slow speed, and realize I may fall off the rail if I don't get more speed, so I jump (do a trick) and keep doing that until I get enough momentum to a point where I'm comfortable. In JSR, to get more speed on rails, you must do tricks. More tricks equals more speed.

Well, I somehow beat the first chapter but I'm completely screwed on getting Combo to join. Beat is too fast for me to get down the hill quick enough and I can't land rails to save my life. :(

For Combo, don't follow Beat when you get to the Love Shockers area. Also, when you get to the park area, stay along the side of the fence where Beat is and jump over the overpass to get a head start. On races like that, characters stop at specific places. Those are your opportunities to get a head start. Try watching this to see what I'm talking about:

Also, getting speed, boost, and jump. Boost and jump.

I'm also finding that I suck at this game. SUUUUUCK.

The big thing for me is not being able to jump from one rail to another; in Shibuya, I can't consistently hop from the elevated stairs rail grinds; I really frequently hop right over and off the walkway, resulting in raaaAAGE. I also can't seem to wall-ride into a trick/jump, leaving me short when trying to connect the loop. Super annoying.

You need to get speed and then time your jump and position.

Like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXuUzv06Q8U

See this person going down the elevated rail for speed. You're not going to get as much speed when you get on a neutral, flat rail without the juice (tricks, momentum, boost).

Notice when the player jumps at 0:19 it is to create SPEED. Jumping is a trick, speed = tricks.

Thanks.

I'd seen small jumps used to gain speed while grinding, but I didn't know that larger jumps also build up speed. Unfortunately, small jumps are the only thing I can manage in the Shibuya stage. Any big jumps mid-rail will land me without room to jump over obstacles and breaks.

Clearly I need to practice more. I just wish the game was better about explaining its controls. Yesterday, before trying the Tutorial, the "Unlock Garam" stage showed up. This is the first time a wall-ride is shown, and it requires a Trick with air-steer on its heels. There is no explanation on how to do it, but I got it in about 8 tries. The next sequence, he says, "This is a hard one," but I got it in one. The last stage, Jesus, I thought I was going to rage quit and never go back -- in the sewer, there's several grind-jump-airsteer-grind before a reverse-direction wall-ride. I think it took me maybe 20+ tries, each failed attempt goes through the full fall into the sewer water, fade-out, scene of climbing back onto the deck, then cuts to the skater falling to his knees in failure, and requires a "Retry?" FUCK MY FUCKING LIFE, THE STAGE IS LOADED, JUST LET ME FUCKING RESTART.

I was vexed.

Controls: It seems like, unless you want to change direction, tricks should be performed without L-stick input, and then L-stick input should start during the trick for air-steering. Is that correct?

When you're doing that thing with Garam in the sewers, you steer the character in the air while they get air. When you're jumping, try to make sure you never oversteer as you change direction. You use the left stick slightly. Think of it as a platformer and not like Tony Hawk. When you're playing Mario, you use short jumps and long jumps and change direction depending on what you wanna do right? When you're in the air, you can always control where you're going to go. Don't hit the stick if you're doing to trick, left stick is for changing direction, yes.

Thanks for clarifying that there is a significant difference between "jump+steer" and "jump, steer" -- it is making a lot of difference.

Tutorial's 50-trick combo: cleared (!!!), I can now hit a loop around Shibuya about one-in-six tries. I may use it to get the 100-trick Achievement as well. I maxed at 76, so far.

However, I have a lot of trouble with the bus stop's wall-ride, rail grind, jump across the street, but even when I make that, I seem to flub the next wall-ride, jump to bicycle parking pretty frequently. I have played the hell out of that map though, and can see that it's a 3D exploration/platformer, which is unfortunately tweaking a lot of the right pleasure-centers for me.

From a development perspective, I'm wondering how they tied The Concept of Love to Tutorial completion, which itself is unassociated with Save Data. My best guess is that it looks at GamerTag Achievement status when determining the unlocked state for The Concept of Love, because I completed the Tutorial and quit out without saving any data (PANIC), but once I loaded Save Data, it has the song unlocked. It even shows an "Unlocked" message onscreen, but doesn't appear to do anything with a save data file.  ???

I assume you're not having trouble with the wall grind, that's easy. I assume you're having trouble making the jump from one rail to the next after the wall ride.

With regular skating, you will never make it from one pole to the next. Start with the first one, near the parked cars and the shortcut with the stairs. Loop around the bus terminal, after the wall ride, jump at the very last part of that rail. The extra speed and momentum allow you to hit the next rail.

If you want, I can record myself doing that grind.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSEgxh7rKfw

People are probably tired of me pimping my videos but seriously, watch this. In this I have every single lesson in the tutorial mastered to perfection. Notice how I jump. If I want to do a fast jump to change direction like getting off a real fast, I steer+jump, if I want to actually CONTROL my jumps I hold jump and steeeeeeer it while the character has air. 360 controller is perfect for JSR especially since the DC stick bites into your thumb. With the 360 pad you should be able to obtain mastery of controls with just a little practice.

Thanks for the offer, that's really kind of you. However, I think I've got it!

Yes, considering the route you suggest, the first wall-ride is not a problem, but when I hit it again after a full circuit, I guess my momentum is different than the first pass, and I under- or over-shoot the rail at the bike parking. And sometimes I just don't get the jump timing right, and just skid off the sign. But I've been getting better about that.

The 2nd wall-ride, above the taxi area, sometimes I mis-time and don't clear the two raised platforms, which ends my trick-combo.

That's a really impressive Kogane run. How are you doing the sprays so quickly? At first I assumed you'd sped up the playback for those, but the music doesn't change.

Memorization and swift sprays with analog stick. 360 pad means I can play like that. On DC I can but my thumb eventually hurts due to the stick.

I'm completely stuck on getting consistent wall grinds to raise Combo/what'sherface up to the level of the tags at the back of the level in the first chapter 2 area. :(

You don't need to start from very far away.  You should be able to get up there in just two wall jumps, three at the very most.
