So is that new?

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2012/02/28/new-baldur-39-s-gate-project-teased.aspx

Seems like it may just be an update of some kind for the original games, though.

They always said they didn't want to work on IP they didn't own anymore so there likely wouldn't be sequels. But then they did a Sonic game so wtf do i know.

A steam version would be cool but Origin seems more likely, no? Would smash an iPad version tho...

I can't imagine an iPad version being usable. They may have some fancy control scheme though. HD PC versions would be enough for me.

HD PC...using (say) the Dragon Age engine? That'd be a LOT of work....or do you mean just up-rezzed and wide-screened?

Yeah HD 2D remake. I don't think 3D would work, you'd lose a lot of the charm

I think Baldur's Gate was added to the Steam registry a while back.

BG2 with DA:O engine would be the best rpg of all time.

Ugh

Ugh

Ugh

Let sleeping dogs lie.  Nothing will ever match BG2.

No it wouldn't. It should be 2D

Maybe they should devote resources to not making a shitty DA3

Weren't the original backgrounds in HD resolutions but Bioware just had to shrink them down for PCs of that era?

Is BG1 any good or should I skip to BG2?

1 was pretty err...something

BG2 + Expansion = ultimate PC RPG

BG1 is a lot tougher to get into and really non-linear, not as narratively focused as BG2.

I never got past the first dungeon in BG2.  It was so so so annoying.
When I played BG1 for the first time a few years ago I found the ramp up to be much more enjoyable and was only annoyed in the end game.

fuck bg1.  i dont even understand how to not die in that game.  the FIRST fucking enemy you come across - that wizard who's waiting for you outside the tavern - could kill my character in one hit; getting past him was total luck.  everything when downhill from there.

never played bg2 because of that

BG2 is still tough, but nowhere near as brutally hard as BG1.

bg2 is strategic and the most fulfilling crpg known to man with a fantastic battle system and tactical combat. Bg1 is ass.

I remember having a wife in a kinky lesbian relationship with a blonde elf who journeys with me and my pals through brothels and troll forests killing dragons and getting my shit wrecked.

I'm gonna have to bust out BG2 again, aren't I? Yes, I am.

I've been playing through Neverwinter Nights 1, but it's just so painfully dull in every way. Dull characters, dull locations, dull combat.

Story is more rewarding in BG2 if you've played BG1.  Also, if you're unfamiliar with D&D rules, it's better to go through BG1 first.

That's the best part of BG1. I can't remember an RPG that has made the opening hours of a game reflect how weak you are as a low level character

running around getting killed by everything while my shitwit companions whine at me is not a great way to start a game

me: "maybe i'll do some exploring and leveling"
companions: "QUIT WASTING TIME WE NEED TO GO TO THE MINES!!"
me: "ffs i dont even know what im doing yet"
companions "WE'LL FUCKING LEAVE WE SWEAR"

*goes to mines*
me: "well we've been here 5 minutes and we're almost dead. lets go to the inn and heal"

*sleeps at inn*
me: "wtf that only gave me 1 hp back"
*stays in a more expensive room*
me: "fuck that only gave me back 3 hp!"
companions: "THIS IS TAKING TOO LONG WE'RE OUT"
me: "FUCK THIS PIECE OF SHIT GAME GIVE ME BACK MY $20"

and that was the end of my time in baldurs gate

It has some pretty deep systems that you need to do a bit of reading in order to exploit. This is a good thing, because it's such a long-ass game that shallow combat would be unbearable after a couple of hundred hours. BG/BG2 just keep on giving the more you play. But it may not be for you.

It's great because you spend a bunch of time being unable to beat down a mosquito, which makes you appreciate your rise to power later in the game so much more. These days it's all EZ mode with lots of DINGS! and free loot.

I really like BG2, Fallout 1 and 2, and Planescape: Torment, but I just couldn't get into BG1.
