Title: The Bore Men's Style Thread for Patriotic Joggers, etc. NOW FEATURING UNDERCUTS
Post by: The Business on March 07, 2012, 05:49:44 AM
I thought maybe a thread like this would be a good idea for general style questions, observations, and purchases. That will keep some clutter out of WDYB/Show us your photo/Random Talk.

FM, since you are the resident boot expert, which of these two boots do you like better? I need something primarily for motorcycling, but also for not looking stupid off a bike. For that reason, these race-style boots are out:

I'm thinking more along the lines of something like these:

or maybe these: (I actually had a pair similar to this back when we used to wear black boots in the military)

I actually like the brown color a bit better as it's a bit more classic, but since my other riding gear (jacket, gloves, and even my bike) are black, I'm not sure if brown boots would go.

Thoughts? Any other suggestions? This is open to anyone, not just FM. :)

I prefer the lace-ups, mostly because the other pair appears to be square-toed.  Not crazy about the shape, though.

I really like these, especially the brown, but HDs official stuff tends to be viciously marked-up and there are no reviews, so buyer beware.  Not sure what your price range is.

I'm anything but an expert on fashion... but I think the second pair you posted looks good for casual riding, and third pair for something a bit more "formal", like if you're taking your bike to work or something.

I like the laced boots better, the other pair looks a bit gimmicky imo. Lower pair will never be out of fashion.

Chuck Taylors are gross and not for riding motorcycles.

I didn't realize this was a motorcycle thread. I thought it was about fashon in general.  :P

I wouldn't say they're trendy, they've been popular like my entire life! :lol but I do prefer vans my self, lace up or slip on I love em

They were popular long before we were even born.

I've got a pait of low Chucks, but I prefer the high tops. Only wear them with long pants, though. They look funny as hell on hipsters wearing them with shorts. :lol

From those three get the third pair.  The second pair looks like you need an Ed Hardy shirt and decalled jeans.

Those Red Wings are really nice.

Never much of a fan of white/off-white casual sneakers.  They make me feel like Jerry Seinfeld no matter what I pair them with.

I bought a pair of these Chuck Taylor bitches recently.

Basic style, but lacks the gaudy white toe cap, the "All Star" is hidden on the back and has a pretty unique texture.  Satisfies a need for jeans/t-shirt sneaks in the spring and summer, and only $44 (http://www.zappos.com/converse-chuck-taylor-all-star-specialty-ox-beluga).

Brown boots with a primarily black wardrobe is just kind of ugly.  If you mix it up a bit then they're fine.  And yes, either the 3rd pair you listed or the Red Wings are the way to go.

Also, Chucks are terrible due to the fact that they offer no arch support.

Forget Rocky. NBA players wore them for years.

I have flat feet, so Chucks have never given me a problem. I wouldn't wear them to go running or anything, though.

Ya I like the Redwing Iron rangers too.  They also have a completely rubber sole, which is nice.  (Mine are RW Beckmens).  Note they don't go as high as the actual motorcycle boots you posted so you have less protection if that's what you are after.

these are on similar lines

http://www.gravitypope.com/shoes/product/15080-red-wing-9016-beckman
http://www.gravitypope.com/shoes/product/18159-wolverine-w05299-1000-mile
http://www.gravitypope.com/shoes/mens/wolverine
http://www.gravitypope.com/shoes/product/12744-grenson-5032-02-sharp

price is canadian so don't freak.   Also www.revolveclothing.com gives a 30% discount to first time customers and they sell iron rangers.

Also I find black boots often tend to be either to tacky or to military, which may be fine with you, but brown with a lot of black my clash, especially if the brown is wrong.

I get what you're saying, I don't think they look gauche and are a bit interesting without being laughable. Most of that would be covered by the pant cuff so I think it's only a hint of fey/douchy, but combined with a relatively tame outfit I think it'd be ok.

I have no real fashion sense, I admit it. My idea of dressing up is sports jerseys or band t-shirts plus jeans and sneakers. Any sort of hat plus flannal or leather jackets depending on the weather.

I think I look good in a suite, although I never wear one unless I'm specifically told to do so.

I think you would look best in a presidential suite.

How often do you wear tie clips with ties? All the time? I just inherited a bunch of these and cuff links from my grandfather.
Title: Re: The Bore Men's Style Thread for Father Mike's Self-Portraits, etc.
Post by: Huff on March 10, 2012, 01:07:16 PM
Sorry to hear about your grandfather, Huff, but congratulations on the great inheritance. I wish I owned some "vintage" tie bars and cuff links! I think tie bars are a great accessory and I can't think of anytime they would be inappropriate. At the same time, they are virtually never necessary. I would wear them as often as you please.

Didn't mean to imply he just died (been 15+ years). I just recently received them. Boring story of family drama on my dad's side.

The tie bars are very nice and classy, but the cuff links are anything but. I'll post some pictures of them eventually. Also got a cool pocket watch that I'd like to get repaired one day.

I remember I got this perfect shirt, amazing material great cut and tailoring, tried it on and it fit me to a T. It seriously made my day. But then I noticed there were no buttons on the cuffs and it slowly dawned on me that it was meant to have cuff links.

I did wear it for a bit, but used paperclips as cufflinks  :lol :-\

It's black—just wear something light under it.  You can do anything from a v-neck tee to a button up.  Try a pastel.  Might want to stick with dark pants, however.

I should have said it is my personal rule for mensware. Black on black lacks pop, is overly conservative, and aesthetically bland. You only need look at the image you posted to see what I'm talking about.

Matching colors in general is pretty blah. To me it is hard to pull off without looking unoriginal. Use complementaries. That nicca in that pic is wearing a black suit with black tie and shoes. Lemme guess, also black socks? Zzz.

How about black suit, yellow shirt, blue tie, blue socks, brown shoes. Much better.

The ladies are blessed in that their main stay fashion isn't fucking funeral wear. But I dont mind those suits for the girls that are black on black probably because the shirts. The collars are very trendy, and despite being s timeless fashion, always looks refreshing. Can't same the same thing for men suits.

black suit + brown shoes looks bad 99.9% of the time*. this is all I will say at the moment.

*Especially if it's flat worsted suiting and plain dark brown calfskin.
Title: Re: The Bore Men's Style Thread for Father Mike's Self-Portraits, etc.

No. You have bad opinions on this. "Fashion" is expensive and fleeting. Style is timeless. Style is all about appropriateness.

You twisted my use of the word fashion.

"Timeless" is boring. Let's wear the same thing for 50 years!

Black on black is fine depending on the setting. Some business settings require it, and of course, funerals. But I fail to see how wearing colors that aren't fucking neutrals = fashion and expensive. ??? I didn't say dress up in a zoot suit. Just stop wearing boring ass colors and color matching your shit.

Let me guess Biz. You are dressed in a black suit, with a black tie, with a shirt shirt, black socks, and black shoes RIGHT NOW aren't you?

black suit + brown shoes looks bad 99.9% of the time*. this is all I will say at the moment.

*Especially if it's flat worsted suiting and plain dark brown calfskin.

Naw. It depends on a lot of factors, mostly shade.

and

are two completely different kinds of "browns"

Post by: nudemacusers on January 15, 2013, 11:18:47 AM
Yes, but a light brown of that nature won't "pop" more against black than it would against midnight blue or even a lighter shade or blue/grey. And those dark brown shoes have a bad shape and nobody should wear them anyway.

Don't think I'm against eye gouging pop or anything I have silver and glow in the dark sneaks heh.
Title: Re: The Bore Men's Style Thread for Father Mike's Self-Portraits, etc.
Post by: Himu on January 15, 2013, 11:35:18 AM
You're right. But I don't think it's like, as big an offense as some make it out to be. I think dark brown on black isn't necessarily tailored for pop. It's made for formality without having the traditionalist approach of going all black. But more than that, if you can sneak in a blue shirt, for instance...

That's a good look.

I think it'd really work. It depends on the colors you're wearing, I think. brown shoes with a white shirt and black tie? Naw.

Naw.

But of course, I'm big on blue suits anyways. It has the formality of a black suit, but has pop and goes with a myriad of colors that enhance that pop (like brown).

Leather chucks reminds me of the tuxedo tee shirt.
Anything is better than the awful canvas they use on those now.

Thems fightin' words, boy.

I buy a new pair every 18 months or so, so $50 is a bargain.

Maybe I have acid feet, 6 months and the sidewall starts separating from the canvas. Nike blazers don't seem to have this issue for me, whatever the reason.

No it's not. If you start buying some well-made shoes you would save yourself a lot of money.

I own two pairs of Onitsukua Tigers which are fantastic, but I love my Chucks.

well a lot of people get sticker shock when it comes to expensive clothing stuff... I could say emma hope is what chucks should be, and I have pairs that are almost 5 years old and still going strong, but a $300+ MSRP, or even $100, is not something most will want to swallow.

It's not a "nice things" thing or wanting to spend less. I've got expensive dress shoes for work that I value for their build quality and lifespan. I just genuinely like my black high top Chuck Taylor shoes. I don't know how hard that is to understand.

i'm going to the bar this weekend and im wondering what you guys wear to the bar so I can see waht I should wear?

I was thinking that cardigan and a regular unlogod unbranded t shirt or my plaid shirt and my vest. it's in a ski town so I won't look out of place in that.

i hate plaid shirts, don't think i've ever worn one. Not looking out of place is a good start but really you should be aiming to look like 20% better than everyone else. Try a regular button down shirt maybe

Nah tie + cardi is a little fancy/prim... It can look good if you're paralleling black tie or formal aesthetics but it would look weird otherwise.

Much better.

j crew is weird. For the longest time they were sitting around banana republic level of blandness but in the last 5-6 years they have gone out of their way to court higher end customers and their products are a lot more cohesive and interesting across the board. Looks like JCPenney is trying to follow their lead a bit.

I still don't own a suit that fits me. 6"6, bought a suit off the rack a while back, fit ok but its slight ill fitting aspects (especially the slightly too short pant cuffs and tight crotch) started to disgust me after a while and I decided it was better to wear fitting jeans/chinos, shirts and the blazer for work. Soon I will buy a nice tailored suit, best I've been able to find in my area (fashion+price wise) are these guys at $1300 http://crane-brothers.com/suits/ (http://crane-brothers.com/suits/)  :'(

I remember for some reason quite a while ago Himu asking how to keep his collar from folding up under his jacket. I believe I told him to buy better shirts, or use starch. By "better shirts" I meant ones that included collar stays.

Even with "better shirts" and starch, sometimes I have a problem with collared shirts under v-neck sweaters. I get that problem of one collar in, one collar out, constantly having to adjust, etc.

Well, this looks like the perfect product for all of our collar needs:

http://www.wurkinstiffs.com/c-3-power-stays.aspx

Pretty ingenius idea, I'm ordering some as soon as I get home.

Edit: And if you don't have any shirts with collar stays, check out the Polo Stays on that site. I may end up getting some of those for my polos as well.
I'm liking these:

you'll probably have to play with the sizes a bit; the contrast sleeve chambray shirt I got needed to be a small while I grabbed a medium in the two-tone sweater. This has been the case with every target collab I've tried.

Mobile app doesn't let me :(

Jacket is a runway sample from Duckie Brown x Perry Ellis last year, never went into production. It's just a baseball jacket with snap buttons, try asos etc for similar shit.

Wedding photos always upset me. Look at how great the bride looks—perfect really. Then you have these two hobos on either side of her. They couldn't get their pants tailored to fit? They look like clowns or little boys in their daddys' clothes. And hey, those jackets have buttons on them for a reason. This isn't the Nam.

Like this post if your name is nudemacusers

liked bro

and if you want to see an extreme example, las vegas. dudes in grub jeans, striped shirts (I thought this died off 10 years ago) and grubby sneaks while their women are in cocktail dresses and heels.

then again that chick probably paid a good amount of money while the dudes are renting something. those shoes say 'rental'.

oh, definitely not a rental situation. this is more a long-term 'investment'.

i'm basically looking at this

vs

they both have the same basic features, about the same level of quality (top is better but only slightly)... while i like the general fit of the former, and the grosgain vs stain details, the lapel just feels kinda small to me. I dunno.

also keep in mind i'm a manlet so the jacket length won't be as short as it looks on these cacdemon adonises

These are in the new J Crew lineup:

Yeah, they're pajama pants that are meant to be worn as casual pants. They're basically the same as the similar pants big in Europe for women but now for men! I vaguely remember men wearing stuff like this in the '90s too.

Honestly, they look pretty good in the Look Book. Looks very summery and casual. I think I might get some and wear them with a completely unbuttoned polo to the bar at 2 pm.

i rocked these during a good portion of last summer. it feels so good to have them back in rotation.

levi signature skinny is pretty good, comes in a couple of chino and jeans options. they are 'exclusive' to walmart and kmart and about $20. I have a grey pair of jeans and they fit nicely and have a pretty good wash.

i've seen vegan leather belts that look fine. it's just a small strip of leather, nobody is really gonna notice the fine details. i'd keep belts simple for business apparel, personally, it should go with your shoes (color and texture), and I assuming those would be non-animal as well.

Buying Levi's in stores can be tough for tall, skinny people. The store only like to carry mostly pants for short, fat dudes. There is 5 fucking pair of 46-26 and no 32-34? :comeon

define most other stores. IME it's cut pretty normally, not hyperslim like topman or whatnot. you're just gonna have higher armholes and a trimmer waist/leg than the standard blobsuit from jcpenny etc.

I'm a converse, jeans and 'whitty' t-shirt guy most days. Wear funky glow int he dark piercings and studded leather armbands with skulls and shit, but I kinda want to change my entire wardrobe and look. The weather here is typically 17 degrees spring - 35 max in summer, Winter is 7 - 15 degrees + wind and rain, keep that in mind. Reason I'm rambling is I want to buy an entirely new wardrobe once I discover styles I like, I'm tired of looking like a roadie at a metal concert :lol I've never owned a pair of sunglasses in my life, nor a leather jacket. I think this is significant when talking about my 'style'

You guys want to help re-invent me?  :-[
