Title: Peter Molyneux Leaving LH,MS/New Head Of MGS Europe Revealed--Phil Harrison

Peter Molyneux, one of the most respected video game developers in the world and one of the top creative minds on the Xbox team, is leaving Microsoft and Lionhead Studios, Kotaku has learned.

"It is with mixed emotions that I made the decision to leave Microsoft and Lionhead Studios, the company that I co-founded in 1997, at the conclusion of development of Fable: The Journey.," Molyneux said in a statement to Kotaku. Fable: The Journey is this year's forthcoming Fable game for the Xbox 360 Kinect. Molyneux will continue to be involved in that title as a creative consultant.
Molyneux is exiting both his position as the leader of Lionhead and his role as the creative head of Microsoft Studios Europe, which primarily consisted of overseeing Lionhead and Rare. Lionhead will be run by studio co-founder Mark Webley. Microsoft is not immediately naming a new head of the European studios.

Molyneux will move on to an as-yet unpublicized independent venture, one that ends his tenure at Lionhead. That studio is responsible, under Molyneux, for more than a decade's worth of ambitious games.

I can't remember when I actually began to detest what MS have become in the gaming dimension, but I'm convinced that they are going to fuck up BIG when they release the nextbox.

If I read one more unkind word about this man on The Bore, there will be hell to pay.

You have been warned.

Explaining that he’s decided to be ‘more honest’ about what sparked his decision to use Kinect, Molyneux offered: “I am just sick to death of having my hand clamped to this controller – of having to be forced to use my thumb in a certain way, and having my other hand clamped to the other side of the controller, and having games say ‘No, you will do it this way, and if you don’t do it this way then we will punish you’.”

Molyneux said typical console control inputs make him feel “like some laboratory rat running around a maze, being forced to experience games in that way.”

Speaking in a video interview with Gamereactor, he added: “I remember the days when we first had controllers, when we used to put one finger on one button and then rock it back to touch the other button, when we used to flick the controllers… those are all gone.

“Sure enough, controllers are great, they give us exactly what we want, but that is so tedious and boring now.”

Lionhead to be shutdown by Spring of 2013.

No, with Molyneux out of the way they can actually focus on making good games.

Molyneux was awesome.  His games didn't always live up to the hype, but they were damn entertaining to me and I can't hate someone that dreams big.  I hope this will mean that Fable will reverse its descent into super simplistic gameplay.  They boiled it down closer to a hack and slash game every time.

Milo was a tech demo designed to trick people into thinking that Kinect was going to do something other than make them feel awesome about navigating menus.

That's pretty much the only thing Kinect is good for after you get bored of Kinect Sports and MJ Experience

i don't hate people for dreaming big

people who promise big get on my nerves until i learn they're full of shit, though

My favorite Peter zinger is still that comment on one of his "we're at the stage of eliminating bugs" where someone suggested that they should call them "features" to make it easier.

Officially confirmed

Quote
Microsoft has confirmed that Phil Harrison, formerly Sony’s head of Worldwide Studios, “has joined the Interactive Entertainment Business (IEB) leadership team as corporate vice president with an emphasis on growing the division’s European business.”

The news comes after the departure of Lionhead Peter Molyneux as the creative director of Microsoft Studios Europe last week.

Phil will lead the Microsoft Studios European organisation directly, and will “also influence the broader performance of IEB’s European business through strategic partnerships and by bringing culturally relevant entertainment experiences to Microsoft platforms, now and in the future.”

Microsoft pegged Harrison’s experience with mobile and social games as a plus,. He is now in charge of Lionhead Studios, Soho Productions and Rare.

“I am excited to be joining the senior team at Microsoft at a pivotal time for our industry,” said Harrison. “I am really impressed with the company’s long-term vision for growing the market for interactive entertainment globally and also with the incredible wealth of talent, technology and resources the company has available to succeed.”

“We are honored to have Phil join a team that boasts a wealth of talent from across the industry,” said Phil Spencer, corporate vice president at Microsoft Studios.

“Phil is one of video gaming’s true visionaries, and his experience overseeing global studios and deep industry relationships make him the ideal person to lead our European efforts. Under his leadership, we look forward to continuing cultivating the best talent and growing our business in the region.”

“Phil has played an instrumental role in shaping modern console history through his keen insights into both hardware and software strategy,” said Don Mattrick, president, Interactive Entertainment Business.

“His addition to our leadership team will impact our global business in innumerable ways, as he aligns our studio development and growing portfolio of entertainment experiences in Europe to drive our continued growth worldwide.”
