Who here has a fireplace?
What type of stuff you do you burn?
I have one and have been struggling to get peat burning good.Once it gets going it goes on forever like coal but getting it started is a nightmare.

:tophat

I have one but im fuckin paranoid about using it
-
We've got giant candles in our fireplace.
-
Candles?
@Spencer: How does that work? I'm buying started blocks now but shit is expensive.
I have one but im fuckin paranoid about using it
Why? I let my simmer overnight even.
-
Peat? WTF are you, a 15th century peasant? BURN WOOD.
-
Cut your starter block into small pieces and it will go a lot further.
-
I cut up some wood and use paper to start it.
-
Start your fire with paper and thin logs of spruce or similar light weight/quick burning wood. Use coal or heavy wood after that.
-
We have a gas fireplace now that we've never used. It's in the basement, which used to be finished before we bought the house, but it's not exactly finished any longer. I think the home inspector said the lines need to be replaced, so I haven't even turned it on.
We had a regular fireplace at our apartment, which looked nice but was a complete waste of space. We burned one log in it one time and the entire place felt like a god damn oven for 2 days.
-
I have a gas line into my den so I could theoretically put in a gas fireplace... but that's very very low on the list of the 35,387 other renovations I have to do with the place.

This is amazing.
On a more serious note, make sure you get a chimney sweep (yeah like the ones in Mary Poppins) to clean the ash and soot from the inner workings. A dirty chimney can be a safety issue so you want to be sure everything is clear.
Also, no using fireplaces on Spare the Air days. :wag
-
Also make sure there are no animals living in the chimney if you've never used. For serious. Unless you love the smell of burned animal stuck in your home.
Like etiolate said, you guys overthink this shit.
-
A chimney is loads of work, but the smell and cozyness are worth it :interracial
Peat? WTF are you, a 15th century peasant? BURN WOOD.
This is Ireland man.
