After the Jurassic Park game, its hard to get excited about anything Telltale does... When your licensed game offers less interactivity than a Sega CD version released 15 years prior, you know something is wrong.

I had high hopes when Telltale announced their movie licensing deal. I have to admit I did enjoy Back to the Future. Then again if it didn't have the BttF license I wouldn't have given it a second thought.

I liked back to the Future also. Yeah it was mainly a nostalgia grab but I'm fine with that. Didn't try Jurassic Park because everybody seemed to hate that one.

It's not Telltale, it's the walking dead that puts me off

I wanted to like Jurassic Park. I even gave it a shot after learning it was nothing but QTE. The plot seemed decent with it picking up where Nedry dropped the cannister full of dino embryos. Then InGen mercenaries were introduced. Their sole job was to go in and get high priority targets out. It would have been better a much better fit for a survival horror game. As is it seems like a lost relic from the full motion video days.

I wish someone would make a zombie game where your character was as vulnerable as you'd be in real life. No running endlessly without having to stop and catch your breath, if you jump off a roof there's a chance you break your foot, if you stay outside too long during the winter you might get pneumonia, etc. Like a third person action game meets Oregon Trail.

That sounds a bit like where Disaster Reoports concept would organically evolve to + zombies.
Quote
HP is the character's health and QP is the amount of energy the character has left. QP can be restored by drinking water. If the character becomes thirsty from running or other strenuous tasks, the player must provide the character with drinking water. If the player does not do this, the character begins to slowly lose health. Water can be drunk from clean taps or from bottled water filled up along the way. It is possible to give the character's companion water.

Ultimately, the aim of the game is to move through the city avoiding hazards and finding new routes through seemingly impassable hazards. When an aftershock strikes, the player must make Keith crouch, to keep him stable and safe from harm. Customisation of equipment can help Keith, or in the case of certain accessories, change his appearance. Items are stored in the players backpack, which has a limited number of slots, but larger backpacks can be collected. Friendly characters are unarmed.

Keith is accompanied by various companions. At one point, Keith has choice of companion, Karen or Kelly, both with different areas to explore and storylines to uncover.

That'd be cool. A developer should add that as an extra option to a future zombie game kinda like how Fallout: New Vegas added the mode where you had to keep an eye on your health and hydration.

I wished someone would make a zombie game where the object is to just survive. I had hoped Dead Rising would have been like that but, depite being a great game IMO, didn't fulfill that desire. I'm talking a game like Dawn of the Dead where you can create barricades as you wish. You can create small gardens to harvest food. It would be very tower defense like but with the ability to venture out from where you were to gain new items and supplies.

That's basically what I want from a zombie game, totally open-world and totally focused on personal survival. You can go out of your way to help people, which may net you some reward, but the game will never FORCE you to help anyone and it may actually be in your best interest not to.

That it wasn't a game, it was a visual novel with QTEs.

Finished off the first episode. It's about 2 hours. I liked it quite a bit. It's more interactive movie than an adventure game as those elements have been reduced more so than say something like Back to the Future. The "puzzles" are either obvious or nonexistent in some cases. It instead has a number of very simple quick time events and the pacing sort of propels you forward. It has a choices component which effects the story which in the first episode mainly involves picking between characters on which ones you save and which ones you let die.

If you like zombie stuff or story heavy games then its a buy. If you wanted more of a traditional adventure game then pass.

I never played Jurassic Park because the feedback was so awful on it. It seems like it has elements that were in that game like the quick time events and such. I mean I think its solid. I'll almost certainly buy all of them based on that first episode unless it just utterly goes in the toilet. But then I'm also a pretty big horror and zombie movie fan so this also appeals to me a good bit. I think if you are less interested in those things, the game has less appeal.

Played the demo for about 10 minutes, art direction is good but the animation is dreadful, all really bad hand-key stuff. Also the animation system itself is spectacularly awful -- walking near boundaries results in horrible horrible ice-skating characters

Aside from that it's the Walking Dead and standard barely-interactive adventure game fare, the script is good I guess

IIRC, JP was trashed for animations as well.  I think it's safe to say they need to work on their animation systems.

i thought it was pretty damn good! i think it handles the emotional moments really well and it does a really good job building the relationship between Lee and Clementine. it's got a strong narrative and the cast of characters is well done as well.

the big story/action moments are scripted really nicely so they don't feel awkward IMO.

the only problems i have are some technical issues on PC. during action heavy moments there's some freezing up and stuttering, dunno why that is.

but yeah. i really liked it. it's got better characters than the TV show. and it's done a way better job getting me to care about them than it does in the show as well.

This game is borderline awful. The only literal saving grace is the IP. All the characters are dumb as shit, none if it was remotely believable - oh no, Duck somehow ran over Shawn's leg, who is now trapped, and now zombies are getting him! You know, they couldnt have said OH NO ZOMBIES before they were UP IN THEIR FACE? What the fuck?

Oh no, Lee somehow slipped on the same pool of blood twice!

Not a single adventuring aspect, even Heavy Rain had more interaction. Was there any point to giving the asian the batteries, or feeding them Candy Bars? I accomplished nothing.

The visuals are much better than their lumpy plain shit they've been using for Monkey Island, BTTF, and presumably Jurassic Park. It reminded me of "Bad Day LA" - which unsurprisingly also starred a lead black character in a fucked up world.

The story better have a good turnout...

Yeah pretty much agree. I thought it was Telltale's best in a good awhile. And while its borderline visual novel territory I think that suits this property better.

what an episode

I "accidentally" shot the girl in the street and felt pretty bad.

Watching Lilly come unraveled was pretty tough and i was trying to keep her together but when she shot Carly? I feelings towards her instantly went cold. What HSMP said, I think it would affect me as much but it did.  I'm actually hoping she turns up again.

They did a real good job of giving Duck a quick dose of character and I guess I should have seen it coming. I figured they just wanted to give him some screen time...

That scene where Katjaa and Kenny talking about Duck as he's dying. Man that was brutal.

I'm a slight bit disappointed they never followed up on the Jolene story line but I assume we'll hear more about that in the coming 2 episodes. No way they have the bandit story in the past with what happened.

Question: Did anyone manage to kill that bandit before he jumped the fence? Does it affect things much? I had to go through a somewhat lengthy shoot out.

Thing whole thing has been so constantly good. I really hope it doesnt fall a part in the end.

I missed the first bandit before he jumped so I got the shootout as well. I'm not sure how much of that changes if you get him.   I'd be curious to see.  I'm playing it on the PC with a 360 controller and that whole sequence was pretty frustrating with a pad so I just swapped it out for the keyboard and mouse.  Much easier that way.

I'm tempted to start over though.  Like all over from the very beginning of episode 1 to see just how much this game can change.  I'm kind of interested in seeing how this game feels with Doug instead of Carly.   Doug just seemed so......ordinary.  It wasn't a hard decision to save Carly over him.

You know, I bought the Walking Dead season pass when episode 1 came out and I made it the pharmacy and just sort of stopped.  It seemed alright but it didn't really grab me or anything.  I decided I'd wait and go back to it after all 5 episodes came out before I'd touch it again.  Well, lo and behold I had an unexpected surgery on my knee and had nothing better to do yesterday so I started this up again and now this game has me by the balls.  I don't want to wait 2 month for episode 4..... I want it now!   Man, I should've just waited lol

Episode 2 annoyed the hell out of me.  I hate it when I figure out something way before the characters in the game and I have to go through the motions to find out the big reveal.

Larry needs to get his shit together.

I'll be playing episode 3 tonight I think,

Larry needs to get his shit together?  And you finished episode 2?  Pretty sure Larry got it together by the end of that lol

I think most people figured out where episode 2 was going pretty early on.  It's kind of just your standard zombie apocalypse trope that they unfortunately telegraphed to the player almost from the onset.  Still, I had fun with it though.

Episode 3 however caught me off guard in a couple places.  Definitely some "wow" moments there.

Finished it up. As usual I thought it was very good. I thought the decisions were very tough. In fact for the first time I almost felt like trying to quit and restart because I felt I had made a really bad decision in one case but stuck with it as I feel that's more honest. I can honestly say that reaction has probably never happened for me in a videogame.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I left Clementine at the house and I was sure for some reason right after I made the choice that it would cause her to die or get abducted.
[close]

This was the first episode where my decisions were solidly in the minority for the stats it shows at the end of the game which was interesting and probably says something about me. It setup the threads for the season finale to end in a satisfying manner for me. I like how there was no preview for the final episode like there usually is.

Almost no matter how it ends its certainly been up there as a goty contender for me. In retrospect this game respects its storytelling and  characters and is committed to it in a much stronger way than Mass Effect 3 was for example. The little action bits are terrible but its a relatively minor flaw compared to what the series strengths have been.

Him telling Kenny what he did like a little pansy bitch was the final straw for me after I told him not to do it. Only Kenny stayed with me. And I'm very mixed on him from some of the earlier dumb stuff he did in the game. All I really care about at this point is saving Clementine since most of the characters I actually liked are dead except her. For some reason I also didn't disclose I got bit. Just my natural human instincts kicking in at that point.

What I like about the game is that all the choices I make tend to be more about what I would actually do versus me weighing the consequences of what I'm going to do is going to help me or not.

Which is almost uniquely rare in these sort of moral style choice games.

It really wrecked me when she started crying when I told her there wouldnt be enough time to find her parents.

Taking her or leaving her was oddly enough the toughest choice I had faced in the entire series as for whatever reason like I mentioned above I thought that may get her killed or kidnapped. Nothing special. She kills a walker that sneaked into the house. I was more concerned about the risk of her being abducted while the rest of the group was raiding Crawford and I also don't like breaking promises.

About the story in general. Why the hell would I want to get on a tiny boat with a limited fuel supply and no destination? It's an awful idea. Vernon is completely right.

Given the situation they are in, a boat sounds like the only good idea. They already are in a situation with little supplies and no real destination. At least a boat would get them away from this entire area. I chose the aggressive response when Vernon suggested giving Clem up. Nobody is going to take her away from him.

HOLY SHIIIIIIT! This episode was dark as fuck. Burying the starved child/zombie with his pet dog, forced abortions, Holly sucking the skeezy doctor's dick for meds, Lee getting bit, Clem getting kidnapped. Shit is bad. The only bright spot was the potential to get rid of Ben, who continues to be a total knob, but Clementine took the wind out of my sails by siding with him so I couldn't even bring myself to off him. :( In the end, I gave a big fuck you to everybody and went on my own to find Clem. Game is awesome. It's probably in part because it's closer to Heavy Rain than an adventure game; it bypasses Telltale's usual bland puzzle design.

Though, and maybe this praising Sony more for bankrolling it, I wish Walking Dead had the production values of Heavy Rain.  And while the choices aren't as important as something like Alpha Protocol, the illusion of choice is great and I feel regret at times.  Actually, I wouldn't mind if an Alpha Protocol sequel was handled like this (assuming it cost way less to make than Alpha Protocol--this contradicts my Heavy Rain comment).

Final episode was nice.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
There's less happening than in past episodes but as a whole it's a great conclusion.  BTTF was the only other Telltale game I finished and it had a similarly brief final episode.

Some really nice moments in it.  Thought it was awesome when I chose the "FUCK IT, LET'S DO THIS" option and cut up zombies in front of the hotel.  Entire ending stretch was nice and sad. Post-credit sequence is such a tease.

As hokey as it could've been, I wanted an internalized vision of the zombification process.  Like Lee losing his mind and stuff.  Maybe that happens if you make different choices.   I can't remember if Walking Dead fiction went into the brain activity of the zombies.

I'm eager to see what Season 2 is about.  As far as I know, the only characters who are still alive are: Vernon, Lilly, Omid and Christa, and I think that's it (excluding comic characters from episode 1).  Unfortunately the way these are setup, if someone can die, it means they won't be important in the future.  It's like Final Destination.

Overall, I really liked it.  All it took for Telltale to make a good video game was not to make it a game.

So basically either Telltale needs to fix the save bug issue (something thats been reported across platforms) or I'll just not play the final episode and they'll hace lost a customer for good.

Guy was a burden since day 1 - he got Carley killed, he got Katjaa & Duck killed, he left Clementine for dead, he didn't watch Clem when she went out into the yard, he took the hatchet out of the door that was clearly being used to lock it, and he couldn't even get the armory open. Felt good to get rid of him.

I sent a PM to Patrick Klepeck @ GB regarding the save game situation with TWD and how Telltale has really done nothing to try to fix it and he responded today and said he would see what he could get out of Telltale.

So, fingers crossed, maybe we can finally get some kind of information regarding it.

Through many trials and tribulations. I've managed to finish 1-5.

I can't ignore the amount of technical garbage and poor customer service. As a product, TWD is kind of a mess.

However I also can't ignore how amazing it is as a piece of storytelling. It creates an amazing caste of characters and manages to make you feel like your choices matter. It really is one of the best games I've played this year.

So this is a tough one for me. Looking at just the product itself, it's an easy 5/5. But everything around it?

Now that it's in the past it's easier to forgive though.

I really want to start this game, but the ghetto save bug is discouraging.

What's the best platform for this, control-wise? PC, iPad, or Xbox?

You don't need good controls. I've been playing with mouse & keyboard on PC since all the QTEs are really basic.

I'd go for the platform with the best graphics.

Which do you prefer to watch movies on? TWD isn't a game.

Finished it. It's "okay". Basically a setup episode to introduce characters for season 2 where you play these short little episodic stories with different people. Very short. Around an hour and a half.

Pretty cool little piece of content. It's a great idea to setup these characters so we already have some kind of feelings towards them going into season 2.
