My probing, insightful thoughts of baseball 2012, from listening to Detroit sports radio

-Brandon Inge is apparently the most loved player in the city, yet considered the shittiest by people in the know
-Prince Fields is very good
-Cabrera got hit in the face by a baseball. damn!

That first inning was terrible, but the other 4 and 2/3 were pretty solid. He definitely turned things around after a bad start, so that's certainly a positive from the whole thing. And he gets the win anyway.

Jesus, we got out to a 3-0 lead and I felt pretty good, went to the kitchen to make some food and by the time I got back we had imploded.  Can't really say anything positive about this team right now, other than that I guess we have some good bullpen guys who we aren't going to get to use a lot this year due to not having many (any?) leads late in games.

Also, Chipper is back and hit a homer.  Further, David Wright appears to have a broken bone in his right hand and the Mets lost.  Things are finally starting to revert back to normal.

Darvish has looked pretty good through 5 inning. A little bit shaky still with 7 hits and 3 walks, but he's also struck out 4 and only allowed one run [which was unearned].

Edit: Not a very good sixth, though. 2 hits, 1 run, 1 hit-by-pitch, 1 walk, and he only managed to get 2 outs before being relieved. Still, he had an improved performance overall, so that's definitely a good sign.

Darvish had his best start so far. 6.1 innings, 2 hits, 1 run, and 5 strike outs. The only real downside to his outing was 5 walks, definitely something he needs to continue working on there.

I've been hearing on the radio that the Tigers are stuck with a horrible second base man (Brandon Inge) and he's totally shitting the bed. Apparently he got booed at home a few days ago, which is weird because not long ago he was one of the most popular Detroit athletes.

We got hosed by the umps on Fielder's phantom infield base hit. Dude was out by a step, but they call him safe, which leads to 2-run homerun that should never have happened. Fortunately, karma favored the M's tonight.

He can't keep it up forever, but it's still pretty impressive that Darvish has gotten better after each start for four games in a row. Certainly not going to turn up my nose at a 8+ inning shutout with only 2 walks against the Stankees.

Here's a fun fact: In Yu Darvish's last 25 innings [which is all of this season except the first inning of his first start], he's given up only 4 runs.

And he's also allowed 36 baserunners!

spoiler (click to show/hide)
:shh he's been exceedingly lucky
[close]

That's a heck of a lot of luck, then, to last as long as it has.

Dice-K was exceedingly lucky his entire first season.

(But Darvish is much better and I think he will keep it up by maintaining a walk rate in line with yesterday's start.)

Considering what's happened the rest of his career, nah. And I got mixed up, his best year was actually his second year.

But to get back to Darvish, I really don't think he and Dice-K are much alike. I think Darvish just had some control issues in his first few games and it isn't indicative of an annoying nibbler mentality like Dice-K. I expect him to have an ERA around 3.25 this year. I think he's legit.

Detroit Tigers left fielder Delmon Young has been arrested on a hate-crime harassment charge after police say he attacked a group of men and yelled anti-Semitic epithets.

Police say Young was standing outside of the Hilton New York, not far from Times Square. A group of about four Chicago tourists staying there were approached by a panhandler wearing a yarmulke. As the group walked up to the hotel doors, Young started yelling anti-Semitic epithets. Police say it's not clear who he was yelling at, but he got into a tussle with one of the Chicago group, who sustained scratches to his elbows.

Cutter: 89.9 (90.6)

So he's not done yet?

Even with his diminished velocity, he's been worth 1.5 fWAR, good for first in the NL.

Also, Hamilton plays in a much more hitter-friendly park.

It's insane what one game did for Hamilton's numbers. 4 HR and a 2B will do that. He's only the third player in history to add an extra base hit to the 4 HR. He also hit a HR in his last at-bat the game before, which meant he had 5 HR in 6 AB. Pretty sure no one has done that. EDIT: Nevermind, Shawn Green did that.

You can be excited whenever you play the Braves and we have a lead of 3 or fewer going into the 9th, because that means you get the privilege of watching Kimbrel have his way with your team!   :hyper

Nah I'm ok with the Mets somehow now having the better starting pitching, despite only a year ago everyone praising the Braves pitching depth.

But really, what the hell happened to Hanson, Minor, and Teheran? Geez.

I have always hated Minor and thought he was overrated... he gets to hang around and shit the bed because he's our only lefty.  Sean Gilmartin is going to be good I think.  I have no explanation for Hanson's shittiness.  Beachy  :-\

What's crazy to me is that he has two pitches I'd rate as at or near the top for anybody who throws them.  Like, if he only hit the low-mid 90's on his fb he would still be a very good closer with that slider, but throwing a 98 mph fb with movement AND that slider?

Also:  over a six game stretch earlier this season, he faced 19 batters, struck out 14 and gave up 1 hit.

Kimbrel: 39 IP, 65 K, 10 BB, 1.38 ERA, 1.17 FIP, 1.28 xFIP, 0.86 SIERA
Chapman: 47.2 IP, 90 K, 14 BB, 1.51 ERA, 1.11 FIP, 1.29 xFIP, 1.06 SIERA

But seriously, why the fuck aren't the White Sox on the radio down here? Only in baseball is the most popular team the one with a 100 plus year World title dry spell.

I'm so used to the Orioles looking better than they are early in the year (there was an article on Grantland that covered this for non-O's fans) that I made a point of not getting my hopes up or even following the team too closely.  Now I'm a bit sad that I missed out on a lot of one of the biggest fairytale seasons you'll ever see.

If this were, say, the Cubs, it'd be a lock for a 30 For 30 documentary a decade from now.  At least I got to see the 18th inning of their win over the Mariners.  Best part was the dismayed Yankees fan who had stayed the whole time just to root against Baltimore.

Basically, if Cabrera went 0-4, Trout would have had to have gone 4-4.  Since Trout has already fucked that up, I doubt we get to a point where Cabrera goes 0-3 and goes out to hit again.  It's over.

I don't think so.  I think Cabrera wins it, because the writers will fall back on the "his team made the playoffs and wouldn't without him" canard.  Also, there's a lot of anti-stat dork sentiment floating around right now.  It's gonna be close either way.

I wish Kimbrel would win the NL Cy Young, but I doubt it.  Even though, you know, he struck out over half the dudes he faced this year.  Dude's a beast.

Personally, I just can't justify giving it to Dickey or Gonzalez over Kimbrel.  There's no way you can make an objective case that they were better as starters than he was as a closer.

Quote
NEW YORK—Following Raul Ibanez’s walk-off home run in Game 3 of the American League Division Series last night, slumping Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez—who was replaced by Ibanez in the bottom of the ninth inning—reportedly congratulated his teammate and wished him an untimely death. “I don’t think there was anyone in the ballpark more excited for Raul than me, and I’d like him to die slowly in some extremely painful way, preferably while his entire family watches,” a smiling Rodriguez said during a postgame press conference, adding that he is proud to be Ibanez’s teammate and that he’d really like him to die in the next 24 hours. “Maybe something where he is strangled to death or stabbed repeatedly in the chest and stomach and face. I think it would also be nice if he was forced to walk out onto a frozen pond at gunpoint, and then he just fell through the cracked ice and drowned. Something like that. I’m so happy for Raul.” At press time, Raul Ibanez had not been seen by anyone in the past 12 hours.

The Pirates and Royals' modus operandi is too profitable ( at least they're never cockteases like the Marlins). If MLB is going to have lucrative revenue sharing, they need to establish a salary floor.
Title: Re: The 2012 MLB Thread of A-Rod's Continued Decline

The most egregious thing about the Marlins trade is he didn't wait until mid-season and individually trade these guys to get maximum value. He just dumped the whole lot in November during a generally non-competitive trading time period.

At the very least he could have waited until the Winter meetings to give the illusion that he tried to get maximum value for his pieces.

Baseball revenue is so distinguished mentally-challenged that I don't even know what to think.

Fangraphs' put his value at $17 million each of the last three seasons, so I guess $16 million per is reasonable.

I think 5 years seems like a bit much, but man, it's not terrible considering the market. Fucking Greinke got 6/147. Sanchez got about half that.

Stats over last 3 years:
Sanchez: 587 IP, 526 K, 182 BB, 50 HR, 109 ERA+, 12.0 fWAR, 9.0 rWAR
Greinke: 604 IP, 582 K, 154 BB, 55 HR, 106 ERA+, 14.1 fWAR, 7.9 rWAR

And they are basically the same age.

Ehhh... marginally.  They're very similar across the board- Mussina had better control, pitched in a tougher league and had more strikeouts.  He also compiled his numbers in 4 fewer years than Glavine.  Glavine will get the nod for sure because of ZOMG 300 WINS though.

If anything, Morris will lose support with all of the pitchers going on the ballot for the first time next year.

What else is there? I guess Glavine had a slightly better GB% and lower HR rate, but he pitched in much more pitcher-friendly parks in his career. But obviously my feelings about Glavine are...clouded. He did also win 2 Cy Youngs to Mussina's 0, so that helps with the voters, too. Just dumb that he's a no doubt first-ballot while Mussina won't come close next year, that's all. He could have easily hung on for 300 wins. It wouldn't have even been "hanging on" since his last year was one of his best.

And you're right about Morris, I'm just trolling.

I think he should be in, for sure.

He's short of Glavine/Mussina/Schilling when you go straight up WAR, but that's mostly due to his years as a reliever. And he had 209 postseason IP at a 2.67 ERA. That's like an extra 5 WAR season.

This is pretty cool site: http://www.hallofstats.com/

He has Smoltz easily in at a 136 rating (100 is HoF) in the pitcher rankings: http://www.hallofstats.com/position/p
