I could think of a million other PSP RPGs I'd rather have in America than this one. Starting with Tengai Makyo: The Apocalypse IV PSP edition, 7th Dragon 2020, Frontier Gate, and Valkyria 3.

Yeah, but they'd have to be able to legally acquire the license for those games first. I'm guessing this one was easier to get.

I really don't understand why they're not just funding the localization of a game that people are actually interested in, instead of a pointless deluxe edition of a game no one cares about. They'd need far less money [presumably] and something like that would actually have a chance of success.

Ugh. Moe blobs  :yuck instead of "The Last Ranker" or "Valkyria Chronicles 3..."  >:(

Man, Victor should be doing this on PSN (instead of HURP DERP PHYSICAL) because PSP games can be ran on the Vita. Now is the perfect time to strike on putting JRPG's up on Vita before that gets more games that people overlook the PSP back catalog.

What Victor Ireland and Working Designs did in the early-mid 1990s made sense when nobody else was localizing JRPGs and people didn't even think about translation quality.  Then FFVII hit and JRPGs caught on.  Other companies were releasing games at a much faster pace and without the weird n' wacky "localization" stuff like added Melrose Place jokes in their games.  Nobody cares now.

I don't care about Victor's shitty translations (Melrose Place references), yeah. But I do care about collectors packages that are a labor of love instead of "LOL TWO NEW PIECES OF ARMOR EXCLUSIVE!" that they've turned into this generation. Too bad collections ship has sailed and people should be getting on the digital distro train for JRPGs to even be thought about in terms of localizing.

I can't say for sure on Last Ranker but I can with a high degree of certainty say that Victor Ireland could show up with 300 hot young virgin women, 75 golden camels, a fan-pleasing ending to Mass Effect 3, the Caramilk secret, and an entire bank vault full of cash, and SEGA would still tell him to go fuck himself sideways.

Yeah, I know.  :( I know it would be the same for Last Ranker because Capcom and Sega are all "PROTECT THE IPS AND FUCK THE FANS!" about stuff. I'm still waiting for a fan translation to happen for both of them. Haha, fat chance of that though.

I'm not sure if you're aware of it, but Victor Ireland did his absolute best to publicly rub his dick and balls in SEGA's face for like five years or more.  He has no friends at SEGA.  At all.

Well, that, too. Victor burned a bunch of bridges with that move to Playstation in the day, didn't he?

The move probably wouldn't have caused much in the way of hard feelings if he hadn't, in usual Vic Ireland fashion, carried on like SEGA raped his mother in every fucking interview for the next six or seven years after.  All because they tucked his booth in a corner at E3.  He's an unprofessional infant and pretty much anyone who's ever had to suffer him won't be lining up for a return tour.

Which reminds me of a story I've posted too many times before.  Back in 2000 when the PS2 was brand new and hadn't been released outside Japan yet, I imported Silpheed TLP.  It was dull and boring, and I found a Usenet thread on the game and posted that it sucked.  Didn't check Usenet for a few days.  When I came back to the thread, Victor Ireland had asked me why I thought it sucked, declared me a troll for not responding, then a bunch of his boot-licking fanboy toadies joined in and called me a WD hater.  (Capcom published the game)

I posted why I didn't like the game and he gave me an answer akin to "well we're going to adjust this setting and add and REMOVE these options to make it better!"   :lol  Others then chimed in how they thought it was stupid that WD's philosophy of removing shit to make games "better" was.

WD had stupid extras with their games...and until a Lunar II (Lunar 1?) re-release, you HAD to buy their collector's editions, paying more for full color manuals and stupid cardboard cut-out crap or punching puppets or whatever.

I still have some of their games that I need to dump, but have been unable to do so.  Nobody wants Arc The Lad Collection with a bonus pocketwatch.

But hey, they brought out Sega Ages for the Saturn, so I can't complain too much.

Arc the Lad Collection is pretty sick though...

Oscar, in that Kickstarter thread, Vic mentions something about "SEGA being a lot more receptive to his idea than he was expecting". Probably doesn't mean anything though...

:'( Hey!  :lol Nothing to do with being 15, if there's artbooks, music CDs, and stuff that is somewhat "meaningful" in terms of the game, it's better than most collector's editions this generation. That said: WD's "collector's editions" were all mostly shitty, yes.

Frankly, though, that ship (collector's editions in general) has passed. DD is on the uptick and slowly it's going to take over consoles. In fact, it's downright stupid to release a physical collector's edition with no DD access for a PSP game in this current time with the Vita out.

Yeah, people need a reason to participate in a Kickstarter - like "I am going to get a game I would otherwise not get." That's the traditional reason, at least!

This is pretty much a UMD-only physical release with 1000% markup on the physical items. Unless you really want a Clash of Heroes II plushy (wat) there's NO reason to donate.
Title: Re: ALL ABOARD THE VICSTARTER! TOOT TOOT
Post by: Joe Molotov on March 29, 2012, 12:21:51 PM
IMO, if you want to have a successful kickstarter, you need a "Pay $15-20, get a digital copy of the game" reward tier. The lower tier rewards for this kickstarter are laughable, and $60 is well out of impulse range.

Then of course there's the fact that nobody wanted this game, it's on the PSP, and it's coming out anyway...
Title: Re: ALL ABOARD THE VICSTARTER! TOOT TOOT
Post by: Great Rumbler on March 29, 2012, 12:29:49 PM
Yeah, this is pretty much a textbook case in how NOT to do a successful Kickstarter.

Also, they're asking for $500k, which, despite Wasteland 2 and Double Fine Adventure, is still quite a lot.

I was/am curious as to how Wasteland 2 could even be made at such a low amount.  I'm expecting an indie-ish level of visuals (Bastion is the best case scenario) with good writing and gameplay, but still, that's stretching the development budget quite a bit, isn't it?  Doublefine's game could also have naff graphics, but that doesn't really matter for its genre.

Really?  You must not have spent much time talking to PC gamers.

I do, but it seems like a lot of modern day PC gamers don't remember stuff that came out before Starcraft... on sites like GAF you hardly ever hear people mention about the Ultima series or the SSI Dungeons and Dragons titles or other early PC RPGs. I've played Wasteland a while back and it was a pretty good game, I liked CRPGAddict's writeup of the game.

312 backers at the $59+ level.

Well, at least now we have an answer to the question "how many people still fondly remember Working Designs?"

If this were for the PS3 version, I'd fork over $59. As it's for the PSP, I have no interest, even though I own one.

whereas for me, if this were to actually fund a title reaching the US, I would chip in. since it's licensed and being translated anyways, no.

They've updated the rewards with a soundtrack (:sarcasticwank) for $20, and a digital code included at $100

I'm even more picky.  If this were funding a title to reach the US, *and* it wasn't a fucking mediocre piece of shite, then I might have chipped in.

I meant I would pay to fund a title reaching the US. not this specific title, which is a piece of shite. but, you know, there needs to be a direct "spend money, get something" involved in the transaction.

Also, please note that for the physical version of the PSP game, you need a PSP capable of playing North American region PSP games.

Did someone not leave Vic the memo?

Wait...so this game is already going to be released regardless? And they want people to pay them  to produce a physical copy of a game on an unpopular format, for a "dead" system, with some nice packaging and crap, so they can shell out more money for it?

lyte catches on quick

These days, every time there's an Indie Bundle I get 4-5 games (the ACTUAL games!) for under $5, and the soundtracks too! $20 for the digital soundtrack? What the fuck is Vic smoking?

it's like fans of Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey funding a Seventh Seal sequel

I know you're trolling, LinkZeldaGannon, but a more suitable analogy would be that it's like Bioshock fans funding a System Shock sequel.

That question has been asked to Brian Fargo in several interviews and his answer is always "I've been doing this for 25 years, I know what I'm doing," so...there you go.

He also mentions the cost of cutscenes, voice acting, publisher bloat, ect.

@Oscar, I know SEGA is pretty lenient with fanmade games like Retro Sonic etc, but have there ever been reports of them shutting down fansubs?
