That's what's this about. They're changing it now so when they open the floodgates to third party apps it'll be easier to manage.

I think the new design is much, much easier to use than Facebook. Like it isn't even a contest IMO. Also easier than the last design too.

Probably the next step honestly. The new launcher area paints a pretty clear picture what's coming next.

I would have agreed six months ago, but now I'm not so sure. It seems like more and more people are disenchanted with Facebook lately, at least anecdotally speaking.

I don't really use either. I just wish Facebook would fix their shitty people search

If they do manage to get the masses it ultimately doesn't matter because somebody else will eventually come up with a more compelling interface and everyone will just jump to that. It's like being in a busy fast food restaurant in the heart of the city at 1pm on a Saturday, and then going to some little Zen garden thing on the top of a skyscraper. Same city, but it feels so much more... quiet. Contemplative.

Plus now that all the unoriginal/winey lamers have moved onto social networks, the blogs that are still going are mostly of a distilled quality.

(I'm not hating on social networking either, obviously. It has several useful purposes.)

I log onto Facebook every other day to check notifications and goddamn is it just a fricking horrible site. I mean it wasn't always so bad, what happened? And while I was excited for timeline at first, it's definitely style over substance. Finding old posts on your profile is such a fricking chore now. Google+ took the best feature of the new profiles (cover photos) and created a much better profile experience with them.

I get the complaint that Google+ doesn't have "any of your friends." Few of my IRL friends use it, but a couple do and them combined with the pages/people I follow (one-way) make it worth it for me. However what I don't get is bashing the service itself. It's a great service, and although the new Twitter is better than the prior version I still think of the three Google+ is hands-down the best experience.

Not to mention photos, which in itself is probably the best photo hosting site out there. In any terms. Available storage, available bandwidth, quality preservation, video player, lightbox, community, editing (has a full featured editor right there), etc. And instant upload for the Android app is just a remarkable timesaver. Can't speak higher of the photo experience. If the Facebook-killing aspect of Google+ never catches on, they could easily retool it into the #1 photo site online overnight.
