Title: Pain in left side of the chest
Post by: Cerveza mas fina on April 30, 2012, 03:32:29 PM
For the past two days I had a pain in the left side of my chest when I breathe in deeply. It's not sore ribs or muscles that I can say. Not sure if I should go to the doctor with this. Just want to sit it out, but maybe someone here knows something?

1. Heart attack? Could be with my lifestyle.
2. Angina? Not sure what this is really.
3. Pneumonia? Don't think so, would be both sides.

don't they have universal healthcare in ireland? in the usa, you'd have to pay 50-100 bucks just to see a doctor if you don' have insurance and you won't go to the doc? you don't deserve socialism.

do you smoke?

You're probably getting into some advanced stage of whatever STD you contracted from that southeast asian hooker you picked up a couple of years ago.

Go see a doctor.

I quit smoking 4 months ago.

I have private health insurance, Himuro. System here in Ireland is weird though, there is some universal health insurance, but you have to pay the minimum yourself.

If it's been going on for two days, then I really don't think it's a heart attack. Still sounds like something you ought to check with a doctor about, though.

Any excessive shivering sweating nausea? Pain in other areas, arms, neck, jaw, etc? These are more symptom of a heart attack but MIs can be relatively asymptomatic.

Angina is just a fancy word for chest pain. It's a symptom of artery clogging around the heart which can lead to cardiac disorders.

Pneumonia is probably unlikely if you arn't coughing, spitting up, have flu like symptoms.

Was there any event leading to the pain or did it appear spontaneously? And how severe is the pain?

Because it only is affecting you when breathing deeply, I don't think heart attack. If you start feeling worse or develop more symptoms, I would see a doctor

Could be a lung condition, so if the pain doesn't go away you should see a doctor

Torn lung perhaps? Or heart AIDs

Any tear in a lung is going to collapse it immediately which is a serious condition. Doesn't seem likely if there is no pain when breathing normally

The fact that it happens as the result of something you do with muscles in that area is probably a good sign

Uh, no.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pneumothorax (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pneumothorax)

Like I said, I've had it before.  If he had the serious one, he'd be in the hospital.

Right, I was mainly talking about a puncture of the lung tissue, which is going to deflate the lung.

Regardless, the lack of breathlessness and pain when breathing normally makes me think a possible lung condition is not extremely serious

I remember this came on after I made a nice fire in the fireplace and was breathing into it to light it up...

I do feel tense on the chest and run out of breath quicker then normal when running up the stairs. That said I did have sex with this condition twice and I didn't die.

Huff are you a doctor? And btw who are you? Name change?

I'm no one previous.

I'm working on my PharmD, but am considering getting my MD afterwards.

And a doctor should be able to confirm a collapsed lung with a stethoscope and xray.

It can blow your mind, just how exactly the body works!

Get it checked, but in the meantime, when you go to sleep tonight, reflect on the meaning of consciousness, and how the various organs inside your body work to manufacture the necessary amniotic fluids to function.

Sounds like you damaged your intercostal muscles

Probably this, also Tietze syndrome.

Does it go across your ribs at all? I had something like this a few years ago (called costochondritis). Basically the cartilage between the rib+sternum becomes inflamed and it hurts like fucking hell. Usually around the 4th/5th rib on the left side. Has something as well to do with the intercostal muscles spasming too I think. I ended up with a fucked up back for a while too from some referred pain and also holding my my left shoulder in a shitty position because of it.

Scared the shit out of me too, thinking I was having heart problems at 26. Eventually went away after some physio and light low impact exercise (swimming mainly). Go and see a doctor, and get them to press on your ribs to see if there's a particular one that causes pain. Or just do it yourself

Here's some reading.

LOL INTERNET MEDICINE!

It is pretty funny and stupid to take medical advise from some faceless person on a message board.

But using the internet as an alternative ways for dealing/meeting/consulting with patients is going to be pretty common in the next decade

They just have to figure out a way to make the most money first

You don't need a doctor, dcharlie is trying to confuse you. Don't give in to Big Medicine, just rub some dirt on it and walk it off.

I have no idea what it is but it sounds like a muscle cramp. My father had an extremely serious muscle cramp in the same region, the left side of his chest, and our first instinct was obviously that it must be a heart attack. Ambulance came and they did tests at the hospital but as far as they could figure out, it was just some sort of muscle cramp. They gave him some painkillers and muscle relaxants.

So I would go to the doctor now and just get some sort of tests/diagnosis and prescriptions if you need them so that your symptoms don't get worse. You don't want it to get so bad that it causes you to collapse on the floor unable to move, that would be the most awkward ambulance ride where you know you're probably not hurt that badly but they still have to treat you it's serious because you decided not to let a doctor look at it.

If you haven't died yet and it's getting worse then it's most likely a rib problem. Possibly the stuff I posted, sounds really familiar to me. How old are you again?

Almost 30.

Didn't go to the doctor as pain is way less today. Still debating if I should go since it did last for 5 days almost.

As a MD, I agree completly. From the symptons and duration I doubt it is your heart, but physical  examination is fundamental, go to a doctor.

That happened to me a couple years ago while training for my first half marathon. Hurt like a sonofabitch.
