Title: Buy 125cc learner bike or 250cc bike?

125cc bike
+650 euro
+cheap insurance
+great mileage
-underpowered
-will sell it when I get to drive bigger bikes in 6/12 months

250cc bike
+decent power
+rides great
+prob won't sell it immidietly when I get to drive bigger bikes in 6/12 months
-1500 euro
-expensive insurance


Now for the next 6/12 months I won't be doing anything else but riding round the city and learning, not going on any trips. Prob just commuting, (anywhere betwee 10 and 40km a day max).

250cc, which what we use for learnin' here in the states. you will WANT WANT WANT the extra power as you get comfortable, possibly within the month. 125cc is waaaaaaay too gutless.

My dad actually emailed me saying that 250cc will be boring too quickly so in a year id want to switvh anyways. so for now I might as well go for the cheap one to learn to ride.

Its nice to share things like this with biker dad.

Riding a motorcycle is generally not a good idea.  You would think so too if you've seen the mushy brains of people who fell off their bikes through no fault of their own.

I'm thinking of buying an '09 Harley Davidson Softail Heritage.  I've got a buddy whose g/f doesn't let him ride anymore so he's selling it.  It only has 8000 miles on it and he already has equity in it.  I'll be buying it for 15k.  I'm not really familiar with bikes but I love the look of HD's and his is especially nice and well cared for.  Any thoughts?

Get the 250cc, but ride safe and buy protective gear. Remember the old ad slogan? "Got a $5 head? Wear a $5 helmet."

Gloves, too. Don't skimp there if you enjoy having fingers.

Fair point.

The guy made the point to me initially had some rags he referred to as his $20,000 gloves. He'd been in an accident, and the surgery and therapy to recover use of his hands had cost that much, because (he said) he had bought cheap gloves. Now he has some serious gloves.
