Master of Puppets has been my starting point and while listening to Kill 'Em All I have noticed something very sorrowful that has lead to me not listening to Master of Puppets all that much.
Metal, thrash Metal, it don't matter. It is ultimately rock music. The trouble with Metallica is that they decided along the way, while improving on composition and lyrics, to change the sound of their guitars into these big, lifeless, machine-like instruments with no soul. A guitar needs to wail. The guitars don't wail on Master of Puppets. They sound like machines. But on Kill 'Em All, the guitars sound pretty damn awesome. Which results in me enjoying the album more despite not being as good as Master of Puppets (For one, James Hetfield doesn't sound as good there as he does on Master of Puppets). But the guitars, man. It seems to me that the sound of the freakin' guitars is pretty important.
Example: Seek & Destroy versus The Thing That Should Not Be. I mean what the fuck is going on with the latter song? The guitars sound fucking stupid. Real talk. It sounds too damn heavy and obnoxious. Guitars need to sound like guitars, like they do on Seek & Destroy. Fortunately for the song Master of Puppets, it's not so bad, but for the rest of the tracks on the eponymous album the songs are not so well off.
Really really real talk.

... is that outside of a few songs they suck and make some pretty boring music.

My mind is full of fuck right now. The Thing That Should Not Be is one of the heaviest songs ever. The guitars are supposed to sound heavy. It's not obnoxious, it's fucking metal. :rock
edit: Also, :bow Leper Messiah :bow2

This might be the worst thread of all time

one of the most overrated bands ever. EVER.
-
Not very familiar with this group, but their movie was pretty funny. They should make a sequel, or maybe do a reality show.

St. Anger had a lot of potential though. There are some good ideas and riffs throughout the album, the execution and production were just horrible. That might have been the last album I was truly, truly obsessed with pre-release. I remember living on the Metallica forums and Blabbermouth site ingesting every bit of news. At one point the band started releasing like 20-30 second clips of song demos (no vocals) and it sounded so good. Then metal journalists started hearing full songs and reporting about the drums being fucked up, but Metallica would say the album wasn't finished blah blah blah.
Bros, I still remember the exact day our local best rock station premiered the title track. I was about to drive to school but didn't want to leave the radio in my room lol. Finally the song played. Intro wasn't bad...then the singing started and I was like what the fuck. Then the song pretty much repeats the instrumental intro again, followed by the same verse iirc; I thought the radio station was just looping a two minute clip for six minutes or something.

They're pretty much useless aside from Kill em All and Ride the Lightning.
But man. Those are two pretty good albums to have be your high water mark. It's a shame they decided to first suck, then suck and be a shitty southern rock-ish band for a while, then try to rock again only to fail. Go spend your money, guys. We'll think better of you than if you put out more Loads or St. Angers.

my favorite Metallica release is Garage Days Re-Revisited.

I forgot that existed for a second, that's pretty good as well. Latter Cliff/early Newsted days were pretty good.

I know you're like, young and shit, but the band really started to suck after those albums. True story, sorry bro. Parts of And Justice are ok, but everything afterwards is stained with the taint of failure.

Dude, you're saying Master Of Puppets sucks. Repent
-
Eh, I don't like it as much as the other two. It's ok. Better than and justice and all of the stillborn babies that came after it, for sure.
-
My fav Metallica album is the greatest hits one.
-
I only like Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, and ...And Justice for All. The black album is alright.

Hey, believe me I'm as upset as anybody that I mistook Metallica for Led Zeppelin, even for just a few seconds. It's a burden I'll have to carry for the rest of my life.

the only way to make it better is to masturbate to good times bad times' drums
only then can i forgive you

The Black Album is a great hard rock album, I still don't get why people are butthurt. It's not really a metal album. Metallica's first four albums are basically classic metal records, and the fifth is a classic hard rock album. After that...lol for the most part. Load/Reload have good songs, as do the other albums.
the best song from Garage btw:

^^that

Reload and St. Anger are the only Metallica albums I dislike. I think Metallica gets a bad rap partially because their shit gets overplayed. The Black Album has been driven into the ground in terms of radio plays and in the homes of angsty teenagers and gyms.

I've actually come to really like most of Load over the years.
The Outlaw Torn :bow2
What I find with both Load and Re-Load is that they get better with age. Like most I started with the classics and when Load launched, the short-sighted teen me thought they were a slap in the face to the classic albums. More recently however I find I can get into those albums much more easily than the rest of their catalogue.
