Title: NFags changing their stance in 3...... 2...... 1.......
Post by: magus on June 02, 2012, 07:36:37 PM
there have been a lot of rumors about nintendo adding an achievement system,to the point i'm actualy starting to believe it

Quote
Another round of rumored info, coming from a supposed European development house with several Wii U projects in the pipeline...

- achievement system also allows you to gain points
- a certain amount of points nets you access to additional features

“We have a lot of freedom with the Wii U points system, we can add “brackets” for players, e.g. if you amass X points you get promoted into a new bracket with awards such as new MP [multiplayer] skins. It’s basically what we’ve been asking Microsoft to do for years. Players who earn points by completing the game should be awarded. We can do that now.”

Quote
According to a developer we spoke to this afternoon, the Wii U will have its own form of achievements.

The developer stated that the ‘achievements system’ has its own “Nintendo-spin” that makes it quite unlike the Trophies and Gamerscores we all know so well.

They added that it will be a system that “tracks gamer-time”, “scores” and “more”.

Wii U Daily reported this ‘system’ as one that features in the latest dev kits earlier in the week.

Would this be similar to the 3DS’s Activity Log but expanded? Is it even a surprise Nintendo might be doing this?

Regardless, we really haven’t got that long to find out. The clock is ticking.

If its an achievement system with REWARDS then no I'm not changing my stance. I've always contested Achievements are empty frivoulous nonsense unless you tie unlockables to it.  Y'know, like Smash Brawl, or the Metroid Prime Trilogy disc.  Call of Duty kinda does the achievement thing right but I view the challenges as SOMETHING to shoot for.  Its usually unlocking pro perks, exp, special callsigns.  I just need some carrot as opposed to gamerscore.

In true Nintendo fash you'll be punished if you spend too much time using it.

No, because that would be a good idea.

I've always thought achievements were kinda cool, just kinda pointless.

achievements are pointless unless there is a number attached or tangible awards for unlocking certain achievements. personally, prefer the number going up.

Some Wii games have had in game achievement type stuff in them already so this happening isn't too shocking. good on them for actually giving players something for their accomplishments besides numbers, I'd imagine the other two will implement something similar as well.

Achievements are great when they're actually achievements, like beating a game on a single credit or getting a high score. Games that only use them for stuff like "you beat chapter 2!" are doing it wrong.

Why do you care so much about people who like Nintendo over another system? Who gives a flying fart! It's not like your "console of choice" enters a tournament each year to compete against the other system in any events or things other than shitty awards shows and biased "gaming journalism." If you want to bitch over something, pick a favorite sports team. FFS

I'm saving this for any future tinfoil hat console drama craziness.

Are Nintendo fans really vocal about hating achievements?

Progression based achievements are fine.....

I think there's an old quote where one of the Japanese guys lampoons achievements, saying the dangling carrot isn't good design, or something along those lines.

Whether it's part of the hive mind? not sure.

I don't care much about achievements but some are alright.  My favorites are pacifist ones in Mirror's Edge and Deus Ex, and others from Deus Ex, like never upgrading in the DLC or going completely undetected.  Things that inform you of additional goals.  I like joke achievements too.

Progression achievements are fine, but I said games that -only- have those achievements are doing it wrong. Personally, I would tier it like this: 500 points for a normal playthrough, 200 for higher difficulties, 100 for random stuff (like Crackdown or Dead Rising), and 200 for challenging achievements. But obviously it depends on the game... it's not like you can have some skill-based achievements in a visual novel or something.

i love achievements and i don't see why people are "against" a system that can be ignored completly if you want,it always seemed to me the people that were most vocal about it were the same that had the system without one

case in point

To be fair: Most developers use that to see how many people beat their game and when (if they even start!) do they drop the singleplayer if they don't.

Frankly, I don't mind those as they're a good checklist of me beating the game but I guess the "beat game at <x> difficulty" ones could also fit.

Can't wait until the inevitable "Going to buy this game on Wii U over PS3/360 because of superior visuals and Nintendo star points xD hehe kawaii desu" posts.
