Holy smokes am I pissed. I bought a Transformer tf300 Pad today, specs/features and $399 price sold me. Then I find out that in ICS, you can't hide the status bar. Like, ever. Oh, you can "dim" it, but it's still there, eating up 5% of your screen 100% of the time. While reading. While browsing. While playing games. While watching videos. In your face, forgoddamnedever. It makes everything look weird and off kilter because everything has to scale around that bar.
Sure, I could jump through hoops rooting and hacking to hide it, but that would mean blowing my warranty the day I bought it and putting up with busted ROMS rebooting the tablet randomly. Who the hell thought this was a good idea? Taking this back tomorrow and getting an iPad. Sure, it's $100 more, and I lose 16GB, HDMI out, microSD, USB host, and gain the hassle of iTunes, but at least I won't have that blue bar staring me in the face every second reminding me that Google is run by idiots.
Three finger swipe down, hide bar. Three finger swipe up, show bar. Let apps decide. Double click power button. So many ways for this to not be a stupid omission/decision. From what I've read they are completely ignoring anyone who contacts them to complain about it, too. Because it's totally important that you know what time it is every single second. Well, I know what time it is. Time for an iPad.

PD :lol
android phones don't have this problem
-
I just bought an iPad 3 (32giger/LTE/Applecare+). It didn't come cheap, but dammit if I have no regrets. Everything runs like butter. And I know I'm late to the party, but my goodness, those multi-touch gestures (closing/switching apps, & displaying the task bar) have to be the most brilliant use of multi-touch so far. I just love the thing, and I love how all the money I've invested in the platform before has not gone to waste. Goddammit I'm back to being a macfag and I don't give a shit.

Holy shit :lol

This sounds like a nonsense complaint. I mean the status bar does fade away in apps that utilize the whole screen (ie: video players).
Did you try the display model in the store?
-
Apple did it mostly right from the get-go, and no-one else can just copy them 'cause lawsuits. Do the right thing everybody
-
The bar icons fade away (on some apps, not all) but the bar itself never goes away. There is still a bar there, no matter what, eating up screen real estate and effectively lopping off about 1/4" inch of usable screen at all times. Evidently this is just for ICS tablets, and you can hide the bar on phones. It's like adding 1/4" of extra bezel that you constantly have to reach over. It's not a nonsense complaint.
I had a hacked ROM of ICS (CM9) on my HP Touchpad which allowed you to hide the status bar. I didn't know that hide feature was specific to the particular ROM, so I didn't bother to check when I messed around with it in Best Buy. I figured, you know, it'd be common sense that anyone using something that is all screen might want to use, you know, all of the screen. And that no one would be fucktarded enough to take a piece of that screen away permanently.
-
I thought this was going to be a thread about some new technological breakthrough in Japan.
-
you could always put a strip of tape over it
-
i'm running ICS on my HP touchpad, the bottom bar is black and blends in with the bezel
what a trivial thing to complain about.
but whatevs, if you think not having that there is worth 100 bucks then more power to you, /shrug
-
It's not trivial. It adds 1/4" to the bezel at all times that you have to work around, and takes away 54 lines of resolution. Everything has to scale around the resulting weird resolution, so everything looks a bit off on the 16:10 ratio of the tablet.
Plus it's already force closed several apps, like GTA III (before I could save, too). I had been thinking that it was just CM9 being buggy when I had it on the Touchpad (btw, as I wrote earlier, those CM9 devs must think the way I do because they kept in the option to hide the status bar), but it turns out Android is just buggy all around. I don't know anything about UI design, but I do know that it's dumb to unnecessarily take away 1/4" of your screen.
Apple's not perfect, but their UI runs smooth and they don't pull any shit like that.

Traded in a few things and splurged on the 32GB iPad. Best Buy has an extra 100% trade value for games through June, btw. $50 for a handful of stuff Gamestop probably would have given me $10 for. The guy who went to get the iPad from the back asked me what I was trading in, and when I told him about the force closes he just nodded and said "Fragmented platform." :lol
Thread over, iPad wins.
-
iPad 2 or HD?
-
if apple ever makes a 7-8" ipad i will NEVER look at awful android again
-
iPad HD. I got 1 1/2 month's worth of rent free for opening and closing the pool in April and May until they could get someone else, so this is the first time in a longlonglong while I have had disposable cash to buy something instead of trading in other things (like I did for the Vita). My truck will probably blow up tomorrow and I will regret having spent that extra money, but for now WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOipad
-
Holy fuck at this screen. It makes shitty things look so good, I am looking at a picture of an android tablet and kind of want one again.
-
I have loved all my ipads- I dont want smaller

On the flip side it's also inexplicably dumb design.

iOS is smoother but I haven't had any real problems with Android (GS2 and Transformer Prime). I would personally just rather not deal with the stupid limitations you get within iOS products as far as multitasking or customization.
The analogy I use is that iOS is like a girl who looks like a total bombshell, but then you find out she's kind of old-fashioned and afraid to try new things. While Android is like a girl who has odd cheekbones, but knows how to do everything you like and is willing to learn new things.
I'm very used to the odd cheekbones. But I will say that iPad3 has a great screen, it's so stupid that no Android manufacturer has gone up to the 1080P or higher range yet when it's fucking Samsung making the iPad screens.
-
I will miss not having a microSD slot for expansion, access to USB host for controllers/keyboards/mice/HDDs/etc, the 16:10 aspect ratio, and a couple of other things. I won't miss the random force closing of apps, staring at that status bar, or the intermittent stuttering and freezing. That Transformer had awesome hardware (Tegra 3), but it still couldn't overcome the general Android jankiness.
-
I wish webOS would've done better. Android promised so much but turned out to be a brutal POS in the end.
And I love how Android fanboys jizz their pants over things like WIDGETS and FIRMWARE UPDATES while ignoring more important things such as massive functionality and interface issues. "bo bo bo you can root it guys OPEN SOURCE WOOOOOO"
-
We bought an iPad 3/HD/whatever you call it while in Oregon the other weekend. What a nice piece of technology.
-
At work, it's nothing but ANDROID ANDROID ANDROID. They're talking about their phones and not tablets, but all I hear is how much better Android is than iPhone- one guy literally sounds like a shill and pulls out his new HTC, singing its praises, at least twice a day.
And I guess the animated background home screen he has is cool, but I really don't give a shit. Somehow I have been designated an Apple fanboy even though I have told people over and over again that I don't give a crap- I'm a video game nerd, not a smartphone/tablet nerd.
Feels like there's a new Droid coming out monthly that people are foaming at the mouth over, too. I don't get it. ???

Windows DreamScene makes a triumphant return!

Someone needs to make a list of all Eels technological flare ups. Would make for good reading
-
Just wait for the new Cruncheons episode. Some GOOD HATIN' in that one.

Maybe you should exchange it. I bought a tf300 AND 3rd gen iPad in the last 4 weeks The tf3000 shits all over the iPad. Both 32 gigs but the tf300 can support a 32 gig microsd card too. If I had to choose, I'd get rid of the iPad. The tf300 is sooooo smooth and with the laptop dock it's better than my other android tablet.
In order of awesomeness it's:
tf300
iPad 3
Evo 3D
rooted Evo with 4.0.4
Acer Iconia a200
Seriously tho..I haven't had a single issue with the tf300.
