Rumors are flying, MS is gonna announce something today, maybe an official MS tablet of some sort. TechCrunch is saying it's an MS/B&N tablet with XBL streaming:

-
Is the Nook still popular over there?
-
the ereader is fairly popular (even though i own a kindle i think the nook reader has a better design), dunno about the nook color tablet thing - i think the kindle fire has swallowed up the 7" tablet market for the time being
-
GT dude is invited
-
Well, Dr. Feelbad's First Law of Technology states that as soon I buy a piece of hardware, within the week something else will get announced or released which causes me to have second thoughts about that purchase. And I just bought an iPad. Therefore, the odds that this is going to be something pretty awesome have increased.
-
I hate rumors. Just announce this already.
-
Are you under NDA, MCD?
Spill it!
-
Sadly, I shill for MS for free.

B&N told us that "we are not a part of their announcement today."

"Today we want to add another piece to that Windows 8 story."

Developers? Developers?! Developers.
-
"Our most successful hardware has been the Xbox."
-
"We see that combination working in our PC ecosystem"
-
No mention of the Zune...
:lol
-
"We wanted to give Windows 8 it's own hardware."

You can afford an iPad and some shoddy Android tablet, this is nothing.

i took the shoddy android tablet back for the ipad, i didn't keep it :lol
it's rare i have that kind of money, i fell into a gig opening and closing the property pool in april and may and got 1.5 months free rent out of it
i still have poor people guilt over blowing almost all of it on that ipad :lol
-
The non-tard version is going to be so expensive. But I want one :(

This is so Nokia.
-
shits going to be 700 or 800 minimum. also, I think they're throwing too fucking much into once product.
-
maybe if i sell the ipad i can afford half of the good one
-
:zzz
-
Looks like i'm buying a tablet now :D
-
This hardware looks pretty sick. Looks like they're showing all the OEMs how it's done.
I'd be real interested in the Intel one.
-
shits going to be 700 or 800 minimum. also, I think they're throwing too fucking much into once product.
They can always upgrade it later with minimum stuff (USB3, Retina display....etc).
-
i need a dedicated Skulls of the Shogun touch device
-
Availability will be with Windows 8 launch for Win RT - 3 months later for Pro.
No Pricing.
...And it's over.
-
Surface for WIndows RT coming in 32GB and 64GB models. Priced "like comparable tablets based on ARM."
$500 minimum
Pro coming in 64GB and 128GB models, will be priced on par with Ultrabook-class PCs.
$900 minimum
welp
-
so this is a full laptop that looks/feels like a tablet?
that could be pretty nice if you can run traditional windows applications/games on it
-
Now excuse me, I need to fap to this before heading to work.
-
the RT version will probably be around the ipad's pricing. pretty cool, but I just don't like the windows 8 experience. also, wonder what sort of app support it'd get.
-

The non-tard version already has USB3 though.
-
more than android tablets are getting
-
I wouldn't worry about apps. Even Windows Phone got them.
-
Well right, I'd imagine considering its a first party product with the same screen rez's/input devices, the app support would be pretty good. Obviously not as great as the ipads, but still pretty good.

You are right, my bad.
-
I'm sure MS will have RT versions of just about all their normal desktop programs, so there's that
and i'm sure you can be angry birdin' like a motherfucker on it
-
I wanna be able to jailbreak it :P
-
Windows RT will come with free MS Office 2015 installed (Desktop, not apps) BTW.
-
how does stuff like file transfer, etc. work for WinRT? Aside from the ARM processor and apps, is it basically close to a normal PC?
-
It comes with the classic desktop but no old x86 software works on it. So all your old software like say, Winzip, need to be ported first.
I haven't seen it in action because you can't beta test it with no ARM hardware plus Windows RT can't be reformatted in the old fashioned way. It's closer to an iPad just with the Desktop tacked on.
-

2015?! So this is 2 years away?
-

But UI and structure-wise, it is closer to a PC than a tablet in function?

ah, i see.

Meant 2013. Forgot that they changed the code name to it.

More about this for you, Dr:
Windows 8 vs. Windows RT
If you don’t need any Windows 8 Pro features, you’re left to choose between Windows 8 (for Intel-compatible PCs) and Windows RT (for ARM-based devices). Most people will probably choose between various PCs and devices since the feature sets of the two software products are so similar. But there are some important factors to consider before you start eyeballing new hardware. Key among them:
You cannot upgrade to Windows RT. If you wish to perform an in-place upgrade or migration from an existing PC running Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, or Home Premium, you will need Windows 8 (or Windows 8 Pro).
Windows RT cannot run “legacy” Windows desktop software. And that’s going to be a major blocker for many people. However, don’t confuse what this means: Windows RT does include the desktop environment along with all of the built-in Windows 8 desktop software like Windows Explorer and Task Manager. (And the bundled Office 15 applications, noted below, are Windows desktop applications.) What you can’t do with Windows RT is run x86/x64-based applications. And there are a ton of them out there.
Windows RT does not include two Windows 8 features. The desktop-based Windows Media Player application and the Storage Spaces feature are not available in Windows RT.
On the flipside, Windows RT does include some advantages over Windows 8. These include:
Office 15. Windows RT ships with bundled versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote 15. Windows 8 users will need to buy these products, or use the Office Web Apps, to get equivalent Office functionality.
Device encryption. Windows RT ships with full device encryption, which can protect the data on the device if the drive is removed or otherwise accessed externally. Windows 8 users would need to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro or purchased a third party encryption solution to acquire this functionality.
Sometime in the future, we’ll be able to examine and compare Windows 8 PCs and Windows RT devices, which should further muddy the waters. But armed with this information, many people will be able to make their choice right now. If you’ve struggled with Microsoft’s insane product editions line-ups during the Windows Vista and Windows 7 years, this is nothing but good news.

the whole point is that they're closing the gap between tablet and computer than ever before. something like this isn't for people like us.

no, the proper sequence is ms tablet -> android tablet -> ipad 4

I still don't own a tablet and don't really understand the appeal of one. What makes this one better than the ipad?

Windows 8 = Windows 7 desktop + tablet interface and apps.
In other words, it's not a toy. You can actually play Hentai games with this.

i'd be on this like a cumbrian on dole but it really does swing on what Windows distinguished mentally-challenged can do. If it runs -most-/all my existing PC software then i'm on board, if it's OH looks like Windows but... you know... then who the fuck cares?
Will upgrade from the DM1Z (or not...as the case maybe)
-
nobody here is excited about Windows RTard edition :wag
-
Look, all I need to know is... will any version of this fucker run Steam?
-
Windows RT is good enough for my family. At least I will no longer have to do constant software maintenance on their shit.
Then again they all have an iPad already.
-
Well, it does come with Office, that's a leg up on most tablets
-
Yes the Pro one will run all Intel-based desktop software. It's a bit beefier (900 grams vs 600 grams for the RT one).
-

K, selling plasma now
-
The Pro one is basically a MacBook Air that's also a tablet, and runs full-function Windows. It will run Steam and most games at like 25 fps on medium-low settings.
-
Look, all I need to know is... will any version of this fucker run Steam?
Hudson : "Somebody said "tablet", she thought they said "steam tablet" and signed up."
Vasquez : "F*ck no man...."

so then it comes down to performance vs netbooks/ultras/etc and , of course, price...

Pro version is win8 full desktop, so that will

RT version might as well be called Dirtperson Edition

Who needs Steam when we have Skulls of the Shogun?

this is pretty boner. Even Apple isn't bridging their tablets with their computers like this. This is a big fucking bold step for MS. But will it sell? Will it be another Zune?

Is it a full pc (like a laptop) though?
Can I go to indiegames.com and download some new game.exe and install and run it? Can I install CCCP codec pack, acquire some anime eps and watch them? Can I boot up steam and play my games? Throw on MAME and play shmups? Can I use a mouse along with the external keyboard? Can I use an external HDD?
If the answer is yes to the above and it is really a windows 7 laptop in thin form, then I'll totally buy it because that's what I want. If it's some closed system (BUY APPS) bs like iOS then it's not for me.

BIG question is: will this run XBLA?
-
The fascinating thing is the cover, which can act as a keyboard. The trouble with tablets is that you have no proper keyboard... only on-screen. The trouble with the cover as a keyboard is that it has shit feedback... but that's no different from what you already have, except with the cover as a keyboard you won't have the keyboard taking up space on the screen.
But it makes me wonder, if the keyboard is basically touch-only and therefore shit, will you bother to even use it? You can basically ignore that functionality and use it as a cover only...
I dunno.
There are two keyboards one that is a flat touch screen thing, and a real thin keyboard thing with tactile feedback.
-
Or you can just plug your USB Keyboard.
Crazy thought, I know.
-
You do know they make keyboards in all shapes and sizes, right

so it is a PC inside a tablet body?
that's pretty cool. if it runs steam, what types of games can you get running on it? any chance of Civ 4?

Just checked out the stuff from this conference and I'm kind of surprised that this actually looks like a fairly compelling product. Maybe I shouldn't be as MS generally seems to make solid hardware, it's just an issue when they do it too little too late (ex. the Zune line). The keyboard/case idea is pretty ingenious. Although, I am still kind of hesitant regarding the Intel version running vanilla Windows 8. Classic software built for desktop Windows is always going to be shitty with a touch interface and I realize there's the stand and keyboard but why not just buy an ultrabook instead if you're going to do that? I guess it's another attempt at the hybrid tablet/notebook thing but I'm still not really convinced yet that it's a good idea.
Also I like that MS is really going after the areas where the iPad is fairly weak. Physical keyboard and pen input both look cool. If the tablet can detect sensitivity levels for the pen and that can be used for programs like Photoshop and other art software that in itself would be pretty killer.
And someone should really move this thread to the OT.
-
I honestly don't have any real use for this device that isn't already covered by my ipad and laptop but depending on the price I might still pick one up.
-
Smart Glass makes a bit more sense eh
-
I'm glad I waited on buying an iPad.
-
I'm glad I waited on buying an iPad.
Same. little nervous about the price though
-
Eh, why? They really aren't that similar of devices other than a touch screen. Closest thing is a Transformer. The distinguished mentally-challenged version may compare to an iPad, but at that point it depends on what you want more: app variations or user interface. And even then, some of the metro design choices really irk me.
The Pro version is a super-ultrabook basically. With that amount of power, I would probably always keep the keyboard attached, because FUCK touchscreen usage on a standard windows interface (aka not metro).
So basically:
iPad:Surface RT
MBA:Surface Pro
So they really do feel like two separate products with a much more cohesive design.
Eh I don't know. I wanna play with one of these things.
-
I'm glad I waited on buying an iPad.
Same. little nervous about the price though
I'm also concerned about how well they might support this thing. With the Zune HD, they pretty much dropped the thing and ran after a couple of months. At least with Apple, you know they will stick around for a while.

one of the complaints i've seen repeatedly seems to be that there IS a fully functioning OS therefore that is bad
I guess i see what people are saying but isn't that a good thing long term?
the complaint seems to be comping with "installing drivers and stuff and virus and all that! Who needs another PC!? I'll stick with ipad! um..."

This thing is going to cost a ridiculous amount of money.
And I want it.
Only problem is the Football Manager devs posted on twitter this morning that they have no idea how they'll run it on Surface since it wont have enough ram or hard drive space :(

They ran with Zune for like 4-5 years, 3 hardware iterations, before calling it quits. And this is just Windows 8 in nice hardware, they aren't dropping windows 8.
-
Pro version here I cum! ... once I have a job that is!
-
Sounds really cool and much more interesting than an iPad. Would be great for a portable Steam platform... but I hope MS doesn't drop it like the Zune HD (another great piece of tech).

well, it's a never ending target but an ipad form factor emu tablet that could cover all the way up to PS2 would be of epic.
At the moment, a hacked vita might be the more sexy but ... them pirates are being lazy!

Quick, name a PS2 game you played recently for more than 15 mins

Ibara, Mushihimesama and Dragon Quest 8 (last one emulated ;) )
though in the last week the Profeel monitor died and has since been marched off to the big tip in the sky and i have no plans to replace it. So i can see PS2 dropping off - Ibara i gave a run out because i'm going to sell it soon, Mushihimesama because i haven't bothered with the X360 version and wanted to revisit and DQ8 because it's one of those games i converted over and wanted to test out.
I agree with your point though - most of the games on PS2 are dead and won't be revisited. If i don't have time to play, say, Dragon's Dogma why on earth would i make time to play - say - Rule of Rose?
Hence why Emulation of PS2 is a god send. Load up Alcohol120%, insert disk, burninate to HDD, sell game. If i ever win the lottery and want to go back and play some of these games i can emulate them (within reason, some wont work some will...) and if we ever get to a handheld that can run them then they are there on hand + i'll have some cash from their sale.

And in the meantime....let's light a giant bonfire of money and buy some SCHUWEET new hardware!

well, i'm totally smoking the pipe of dreams here. The fantasy is that i buy a new monster desktop and a pant bulging surface.
The REALITY is that i'll be using the DM1Z and shutting my c***mouth! lol.

Microsoft just got done unveiling its best kept secret in years and we got a few minutes with the device and came away modestly impressed.
We got to play with the RT version of the tablet and it feels like it was carved from a rock. All around, it was sturdy, showed little flex in the casing, and was simply a rock solid piece of hardware.
A nice little touch is that if you attach a blue Touch Cover to the device, it will change the theme to match the cover. Additionally, the kickstand was magnificent and did not feel flimsy by any means.
Microsoft also went all out by dropping a little bit of water on to the tablet. As you might expect, the water balled up and rolled right off. Microsoft said that it will handle grubby fingers with ease and apparently even tested it with ketchup and mustard.
The touch cover felt good in the hands and typing was a good experience in general, firm, responsive keys mended nicely to your fingertips.
To be blunt, we have never felt a tablet as sturdy as this one and that includes the iPad. It is quite a masculine tablet with its chiseled edges and gunmetal covering and we walked away impressed, ready to buy.
Our time with the tablet was quite brief and we should note that until we get time to spend a few days with the device, we can't give it a proper review.

well, my MBP2010 does a good stab at a fair number of games. Tekken 5 isn't going to run at anything beyond 22 or so FPS but for DQ8 ? Perfectly fine.
I guess the way to go is with an actual good laptop instead.

or a PS2

the point is to have everything running from one portable machine that i cram everything onto, though it has occured to me that a -hacked- ps3 might be a good idea (though ignoring the "portable" angle)

with gaming - why limit myself when it can all be had easily?

i kind of picture dcharlie's gaming hobby as a desperate fat guy running around trying to sample everything at a buffet. he takes two bites then runs over to the next dish where he has a bite and then heads to the next one, eventually passing out at his table with a plate filled with the same ol' mashed potatoes and roast beef he's had for years. occasionally he drags an interesting dessert back to the table where he can properly enjoy it, but that is a rare event.
lol- about right - though two bites is probably pushing it.
truth is my game purchasing/playing has fell off a cliff in the last two years. Vita/3DS has been where the purchases have made and , whilst it looks like insanity, it's nowhere NEAR what it was. But yeah ... the analogy is pretty much spot on. Only things on a handheld really gets played.
Gone are the days where the wife and i would just stay up until 3-4am playing stuff - it's over. Time to "salad" it.

we are all soaking wet, nay, drowning, from the firehose that is the modern entertainment industry and will be 'til the day we die. Unlimited amounts of everything available for basically just wishing for it. The biggest challenge of the rest of my life is not FINDING the entertainment, or even finding the TIME for it - it's avoiding it altogether and actually doing something even marginally meaningful

Here's a suggestion. Come out and meet some of your buddies rather than playing shitty games on the 3DS.
