Title: Krater (diablo + borderlands/fallout + some jap rpg stuff)
Post by: fistfulofmetal on June 19, 2012, 06:32:57 PM
So this game just popped on my radar from the GB quicklook:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPKUQ4d-NFE

It looks like it has the gameplay of diablo (isometric action-rpg with dungeon crawling) except you have a party of 3 you can control. it's got loot and quests. it's got a borderlands/fallout aesthetic (mad-max style apocalyptica) and there's also some jrpg elements (there's an overworld you move around in with random encounters). You can also say it's

It looks cool. Apparently it 's an "in progress" type of deal where you pay 15 bucks now and they'll be constantly updating it Minecraft style.

I may pick this up. It looks cool.

It's getting killed by professional reviewers.

Which probably means it's really awesome. :teehee

It looks charming- so i'll probably end up buying it. Games with character overcome all odds.

It looks more Dungeon Siege than Diablo.

Tom Chick didn't like it. A few guys on the QT3 boards seem to think it's ok though, but not very deep. I'd definitely get it in a Steam sale, looks like my sort of thing.

Not into Diablo, a bit sick of the post-apocalyptic aesthetic and the random encounters should be self-explanatory... :P

This is by the guys that did Hamilton's Great Adventure and Lead & Gold.  Both were extremely polished games and I really liked Hamilton a lot (was one of my top games last year).  Fatshark is a talented team.

Will check it out, but kind of busy right now so will probably wait for a sale.

Diablo didnt live up to what I expected but it's certainly not shit. Disappointing is a better word.

+1 For Random encounters
+1 For ATB-like or Turn based systems
+1 For JRPG over-worlds

hello. nobody here has played i assume.

the game is pretty cool. it really played nothing like Diablo and the only similar thing is that there's loot.

gameplay is def not a click fest. you click once to attack a target and it auto attacks from there. after you then manage your spells from all three characters. you're essentially playing all three parts in an MMO type battle. when one dude is dying you have your healer do some healing. you have one that stuns guys and slows them, and also your main tank characters up front. it's pretty fun and can get challenging when you arent paying attention to what's happening in battle.

I played it like 10 hours, once you get the tier 2 guys to rank 15 and head west the game gets weird difficult- once you hit rank cap its really all about boosters and implants and gadgets. Also wish there was more variety to enemies, and groups with more than one healer can be a pain if you dont have the dps. I actually kit out a tank class as a dps and had two tanks and a healer which worked fairly well. Still, 10 hours for what I paid is ok in my book- interesting game.

Now Path of Exile- thats some boring shit with poorly design dungeons.

I'll play it some next week after I get home from vacation. I'm actually looking forward to it quite a bit after hearing the impressions here.

random encounters get waaaaay too much hate IMO. as long as the game doesn't feature a ridiculously high encounter rate, I don't really see what's so problematic about them.

On-screen enemies in recent JRPGs have been done so awfully I don't really understand why folks rail against random encounters so heavily. Chrono Trigger did a great job of it almost two decades ago, then Dragon Quest 9 comes along and shits all over the idea.

Yup, DQ9's was awful. But there are some good ways of handling on-screen encounters. Blue Dragon, where you can "chain" encounters together and get more bonuses... or if you chain encounters against monsters that hate each other, it will benefit you... probably the best encounter system I've seen in an RPG.

I really like this game. The atmosphere, the music, the way the game looks, the party dynamic, it all fits right into the mold of the kind of games I like to play. I'm glad I didn't let the critics decide for me whether this game was worth playing or not.

Wow, someone really likes Tangerine Dream. That's a lovely homage.
