Title: Need a router rec
Post by: Eel O'Brian on June 25, 2012, 10:07:03 PM
Evidently mine can only handle about three things connected to wifi before it starts flaking. It's a forty dollar D-link. So I need one that can handle a bunch of shit connected at once. Recs?

I was reading through a ton of router benchmarks and reviews a while back when I was thinking of getting a new one and this model seemed to generally score the highest: http://www.asus.com/Networks/Wireless_Routers/RTN56U/ (http://www.asus.com/Networks/Wireless_Routers/RTN56U/)

Never ended up ordering it however so I can't give any first hand impressions. It's probably what I'd buy if I was still going to get one.

Based on my inadequate experience and life, over the last few or so years whatever seems to run about $85-95 and has solid reviews (like what Pringo linked) tends to always seem to be the best buy at whatever time if you want to run with lots of devices. And it'll last you a good number of years.

I'm sure there's good cheaper ones though and sales obviously, the Belkin I have I got for $60ish at Staples or something but is normally in that range.

don't go cheap. get a good asus or linksys unless you like replacing them when they overheat and die of a summer day

this is absolutely the router I have and would whole heartily recommend and came into this thread to suggest

it is a breeze to set up and has only forced me to reboot it once in a years worth of ownership

it's a bit pricey but coming from the Cisco WR which had been a total pain in the ass it's been a godsend.

it does some extra stuff like serve as a unPnP streamer, but it's horrible for that kind of stuff; too underpowered.  Just use it as a router and you'll be fine though.

serious talk: my gamma has the most ridiculously challenging wireless interference i've ever seen and i've tried every damned router i can find in her apartment. the only thing that works reliably is the full-sized apple extreme. it's probably the best engineered of all the consumer routers. second is the tried and true linksys e3k with the latest stable dd-wrt build on it (but the wireless hardware's still inferior to the apple)
