Title: Hey guys, I'm playing STALKER: CALL OF PRIPYAT
Post by: fistfulofmetal on June 27, 2012, 12:03:19 AM
I've been playing this for the last few days. I'm near the end I believe, or at least in the last areas the game will take me. I'm liking it quite a bit.

I played Shadows of Chernobyl back when it came out and it was like the greatest thing at the time. Sure it was super janky. Sure it the shooting wasn't the greatest. Sure the load times were super high. Didn't matter. when I played that game I felt a little smarter. That's smug but it's true. When the game started it didn't provide me with much direction or even any items to use for survival. I had to literally scrounge everything up myself from dead bodies. I remember when playing early on I only had a pistol for the longest time, I was afraid to go near anyone with a rifle. I encountered a band of bandits on the road just before I was about to attack them a bunch of rabid mutant dogs appeared and started attacking them. After a few minutes all the bandits were dead and I was able to loot their bodies for a sub machine gun and a bunch of supplies. I don't think at any point does the game give you these items.

CoP is different than this however. When you start the game you already have a pistol and an assault rifle with a bunch of ammo. It makes sense in story context and it actually works because it would be silly to just rehash the same exact beginning moments from their first game. The trade off here is that the game feels much more open than SoC. You're goals take you all around the zone and can be tackled in any order. SoC was a similar open world game with zones but it was more linear in it's progression.

So CoP has an easier learning curve I've found. Ammo is not as sparse and I haven't had much trouble with money. I always have plenty to repair my equipment and such. I think it's a good way to shift focus from the survival aspects of the first game to being more about exploration. The character you play isn't a lonely STALKER so it makes sense for him to be more capable in this world.

One thing I can say that I miss is the underground lab portions. In the first game I LOVED those parts. They were little mini horror segments that had some of the creepiest and scariest moments I've ever encountered in a game. I'm around 15 hours into CoP and there haven't really been any dedicated segments like those.

It's still plenty fun looking for anomalies, doing quests for crazy scientists, bartering for items, encountering an entire empty saw mill filled with zombies. all that stuff. great game so far.

If you have not played these games I highly recommend doing so. Grab Shadows of Chernobyl first. Skip Clear Sky, then play this.

I only recently learned that the STALKER games are based on a classic Russian SF novel, Roadside Picnic. A new translation came out this May. The novel was turned into a movie by Tartakovsky in 79.

Sort of survival FPS. If you can play past the first few hours where your weapons are shit and lock while firing then it's enjoyable. The atmosphere is awesome but the gameplay is not for everyone.

STALKER really owes a lot in terms of visual design to the movie:

It's the sort of movie that will test even the most patient viewers and the ending is impossibly unsatisfying, but still, despite that, it's well worth watching.

Never heard of this game but sounds kinda intriguing. Is this an eastern euro game?

yeah, Call of Pripyat is incredible.  It's what made all the STALKER 2 news so saddening.  Original STALKER is great and Clear Sky fumbled and I never bothered finishing it, but CoP absolutely went in the right direction and I was hoping the team would expand on it.  It felt like hardcore euro jank Fallout with its huge open levels.

yeah, there's only a few of those.  Instead there are more moments in CoP where you see mutants in the distance and do what you must to avoid them.

open world survival exploration questing FPS set in the areas around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The area is highly radiated and filled with "anomalies" and "artifacts". You have to be careful from approaching radiated areas and objects in the game world. It's not really a major element of the game however but it's there and you have to remember.

You have to eat when you get hungry, bandage yourself up when you're bleeding, and take radiation meds when you're over radiated.

It's not the kind of FPS where you're in shootouts all the time. It may happen a few things throughout the game but it's not common. Your weapons are mostly there to protect yourself from the rabid mutated animals in the zones. You'll fight off mutant dogs, mutant pigs, mutant cows, these terrifying ones called bloodsuckers (bipedal creature that can turn invisible), also there's these human creatures with gas masks that run around on all fours.

The best aspects of the game are the atmosphere. You'll walk around the zones and find other NPCs that are just hanging around a campfire telling stories and playing music. You'll look over in the distance and see a pack of mutant dogs chasing some mutant pigs. etc etc.

Does Call of Pripyat still do that thing where item caches only spawn after you learn about their location from looting corpses? Hated that in SoC, completely inimical to exploration.

And a seriously annoying number of bandits who respawned way too often. Every time I went near that damn railyard in SoC I knew the place was going to be raided.

Didn't know about the film but I'm not sure I want to check it out knowing it's one of Tarkovsky's. Does it have many overly long, drawn out shots in which not very much happens?

I don't believe so. I've found a few caches on my own.

I've added a few screenshots to the OP.

DOES IT?!

(yes)

(in fact the entire last 90 minutes is like one shot of 3 guys in a room)

one direct link between the STALKER movie and this game is that you use metal bolts to test what's in front of you like in the movie.

edit: obviously the entire game is a direct link but i mean a specific aspect that they bring over to the game from the movie.

Stalker [the movie] is at once incredibly compelling and incredibly boring, ponder that one for a moment. I absolutely love it, though.

Yep, sounds like a Tarkovsky film.

After a while I started to imagine my character dragging a massive sack of bolts behind him. I'm guessing they didn't need to use them so often in the film/book.

the thing is, in COP they give you a detector which tells you exactly where the anomalies are. it also changes how you find artifacts in that they only spawn in anomalies so it forces you to go seek them out and navigate them.

so it makes the metal bolts rather useless.

in the book you couldn't walk 5 feet without stopping to bolt-check

Finished the game. It ends really abruptly and is followed by a "where are they now" sequence that is dictated by your actions in the game. It's basically the same thing from Fallout: New Vegas. IMO it doesnt really work here and is pretty hokey.

Overall I would say that game is mechanically the best of the bunch in this series but it lacks memorable plot specific locals that the first game had. The overworld is more compelling however and there appears to be more to do. So it's a lot of give and take.

The story is horrible.  It's all about the emergent storyline of the overworld.  I just wish that there was more of the faction based gameplay of Clear Sky
