Title: Name some good old action-adventure/rpg games to play
Post by: cool breeze on June 27, 2012, 09:28:40 AM
Preferably shorter ones (~5 or under 10 hours).  Side scroller or top down.  Stuff like Zelda, Ys, Alundra, Metroid, and the games I'm about to list.

I went through Demon's Crest, going through Crusader of Centy now, thinking about Landstalker and Beyond Oasis next.  I tried Super Adventure Island 2 but that game is too dull.  Some of these I'm just replaying.  Others I'm going through the first time.

this is going to sound stupid but....

you played castlevania symphony of the night right?

you could go for monster world since that's what everyone else is playing anyway since it's got a recent XBLA release

I remember those being fairly long.  I'm thinking about it.

Guman's Proof is another one I'm considering.  Heard it called a Zelda clone before.

Monster World IV!

Also play Gunman's Proof, I will be starting that soon so you can join me... along with Sylvan Tale, a fantranslated Game Gear RPG.

Linkle Liver Story on Saturn if you can read Japanese.

I'll probably move gunman's proof up.  Looks very similar to Link's Awakening.

and FM Gun Hazard looks like Cybernator.  That is just an action game.  Does Gun Hazard have exploring and stuff?

anyway, Crusader of Centy is pretty good.  Not sure how far I'm into it.  I just

talked to god ( ???) and now I can talk to people again.  I redeemed my holy sword and found animal posing as the character's mom.

So far combining animals is pretty useless.  I mean, they're to this game as items are to Zelda, but it's never expected to combine items in Zelda (except for roc's feather + boots).  Here's there's a mention of combining items resulting in something.  I tried various combinations and all I got was a move that makes my sword fly in a circular pattern and some ice+fire black magic attack that's no better than regular attacks.

also making me think of how few top down indie games there are.

You're about 60-70% into the game, it's not a terribly long game but it's a lot of fun... you'll have to combine items to solve some puzzles. Usually by combining the enhanced range power with something else.

great timing for this thread! After playing Outland and the Monster World games I got a real hard on for this genre atm. Gonna play Tombi asap and try and sync up a ps3 pad to my Mac for that emulation.
