I haven't played Rondo, but this is like the best Castlevania ever. I forgot how much actual challenge added to the games. Truly, SotN aside, the metroidvanias have been emulating the wrong games in the series!
SUPER CASTLEVANIA 4 4 LYFE!

awesome soundtrack, too. Wasn't SCV4 made by Treasure?
-
Contra III was Treasure. Dunno about SCV4. It's the business, though. I also have a lot more respect for the soundtrack now than I did when I was 12 and wondered why every song wasn't awesome Vampire Killer butt rock?!
TVC 15: You didn't buy it on Virtual Console, did you?

Sadly, yes I did. I bought 2000 points before I flew to PA so I'd have some games to play (my mom's computer isn't an emulation powerhouse, and let's face it, the VC was kinda more convenient). Unfortunately, minutes after buying the points, power went out in WA and I couldn't use them. I hooked up my Wii yesterday, connected to the network, and bought Castlevania, Sim City, and Super Mario Brothers.
I don't plan on regularly buying VC games, though - maybe some TG16 games. If my DS wasn't missing, I would've never bought the points in the first place.

Super Castlevania 4 really is a fantastic game. I actually prefer the new Metroidvanias becuase of all the item collecting and the hilarious item descriptions, but old school CV still rules.
-
The thing that was the greatest to me was the feel of it. I NEVER played a Castlevania before this one, and it was just so old school and hard that it was awesome. The music ...wow it just fucking rocked, I kept dieing and dieing but something just makes you want to get to the end of the boards.
I think the hardest thing was the cave level, after that it was pretty standard.
-
The music does rock. This is the best game soundtrack I have heard in a long time. What has the composer done since?
-
Stage 3's forlorn waterfall music still sticks in my head, and the boss scores are rockingly moody.
-
No way, the best song is the first level song. It's totally gothtastic. It's like having gargoyle horns pumping into your prostate.
-
Yup and I love how it's played again when fighting Dracula, also the treasure level has awesome music too.

hmm gonna have to go through them again and pick the best ones, so many.

Invisible pathway under the staircase, never forget!
I have the original cartridge, it's a dope game
-
I hate Medusa heads, otherwise this game rocks
-
I dusted off my illegal ROMs and played this on my Dreamcast last night. Fuck its sweet. I got fucken creamed on level 3-3 with the Mermen and shit. Might give it another go tonight. I might pick it up on VC as its a bit jerky with the emu Im using. And because this game deserves money thrown at it.

Neither were really "Treasure" games. CV4 had one programmer who later ended up at Treasure, and Contra III had two.

But, yeah. It feels really different for the series - it's sort of a side-trip as far as soundtrack, art style, and mechanics go - but the ambience can't be beat.
