There's a place here called Salt Works II which specialized in country style cooking. You know, green beans seasoned with ham, white pepper gravy, they bring a bowl of biscuits and cornbread to the table, etc. We used to go a lot on Tuesdays when the lunch special was a huge plate of turkey and dressing. Well, a while back someone bought it and when they figured out they couldn't make a zillion dollars off slinging mashed potatoes and gravy they kind of panicked and applied for the show. Dude came in and frou-froued the joint up, menu prices went up, and they no longer serve half the stuff locals had been coming there to eat for decades. Now it's turned into kind of a shit pit with bad service, halfassed new menu items that they got from the show, and no real reason to eat there over just going to Cracker Barrel or some other similar place.

AH! I saw that episode. But yeah- why cant it just be what it is? Thats kind of why Kitchen Nightmares is better- he doesnt ALWAYS go after the menu, and when he does his proposed items generally fit contextually

I remember a big deal was made about them serving some canned food items, and I was like "So? It's good, and it's cheap, and that is kind of the fucking point?"

I agree with "if it ain't broke don't fix it" but they were called in to "fix it". Hardly the show's fault they did.

which in turn makes real cooks assholes who think their shitty service job has some sort of higher calling to it.  or maybe it's always been this way, i don't know.
