Title: Have you guys talked about Amazing SpiderMan yet?
Post by: demi on July 16, 2012, 11:43:57 PM
Can we talk about how absolutely retched this movie was? Again?

This is the one time I ever see a movie and I just wanna talk about how shitty it was.

I thought it was the best Spider-Man movie.

I thought they nailed both Peter and Spider-Man as characters. The old movies didn't feel like them in terms of personality.

The Tobey movies are way worse, barring Spider-Man 2 which is probably on par with it. Spider-Man 3 is wank, and Spider-Man 1 is kind of boring and doesn't feature the intense action of Amazing or its sequel, Spider-Man 2.

The thing about Tobey films is that Peter isn't really much of a science nerd, he doesn't build shit, he doesn't use his wits and combine that with Spider-Man. Spider-Man isn't some cocky guy who shoots out quirky one liners, either. THe films were good, and Tobey acted great, but it didn't FEEL like Spider-Man to me, aside from the web shooting and fighting off familiar villains.

But I really liked Amazing.

Now this is the story all about how
My life got flipped, turned upside down
And I'd like to take a minute just sit right there
I'll tell you how I became the spider-man one day

In west New York born and raised
At the schoolground where I spent most of my days
Geeking out, maxing, relaxing all cool
And out shooting some photos outside of the school
When a couple of guys, they were up to no good
Broke into my parents house and started making trouble in my neighborhood
I saw one broken window and my mom got scared
And said "You're moving with your auntie and uncle in Bel-air"

It doesn't help this movie was reportedly butchered in order to save the "WHO WERE PETER PARKER'S PARENTS?" plot for the second movie.

Seriously, look at what was cut: (http://www.slashfilm.com/the-amazing-spiderman-missing-film-credits/)

Besides that, The Lizard just looked dumb:

The justification of "He needs to speak!" is so flimsy it got wafted out the air the first time he actually spoke. Why did he even need to speak? What did the Lizard say in this movie that was so damn important? "No parents. No uncle. All alone. POOR. PETER. PARKER!!!! RAAAAAAAAAARRRRGH!!" Oscar worthy stuff right there.

Smaller nitpicks: The score was also worse than Elfman's stuff. Mostly unremarkable; some good themes, but the main theme (played whenever Peter's father was mentioned) annoyed me. The ending tease was not hype-inducing in any way, no one yet has figured out who the mystery dude was, plus it's setting up the "WHO IS PETER PARKER'S FATHER??" thing which is just bleh. And why get hyped for the sequel anyways when it's the two hacks from Transformers writing it? Finally, I didn't like the suit, especially the eyes and sneakers.

I loved Andy. I'm on board with a Peter Parker and Spider-Man that are more like their comic versions. But this movie is not that great. Adequate at best, maybe even approaching good with the cut stuff put back in.

The show? God no.

I'm a big fan of Spectacular Spider-Man though, show was God-tier and up there with DC's best. Marvel's loss with Weisman is DC's gain though, and Young Justice has been utterly fantastic so far.

No, Andrex is more a fan of the animated universes, I doubt he follows many (any?) comic universes

Yeah, that's about true for the Marvel side. Comics-wise I try to read as much Batman as I can; Detective Comics, Batman, Batman & Robin, Nightwing... need to catch up on Catwoman, Batman Inc., Batman: The Dark Knight, and Red Hood though.

Haven't heard great things about Red Hood either. :( Maybe I'll just read the Night of Owls tie-ins.

Who cares if all of that was cut. Look at that shit, would any of that had added anything at all to the movie? Why would Conner be talking to Spider-Man...in his LAIR? Without struggle? That makes NO SENSE.

As for the way Lizard looks? I thought it was a bad design myself, especially without his trademark lab coat for the bulk of the film, but that's such a nitpick I don't see how that makes the film as middling as you think it is.

They both suck. Read Teen Titans if you want something like that up your alley. Other must reads: Action Comics, Batman (not Detective), Animal Man, Swamp Thing ,The Flash, Aquaman, Wonder Woman. I need to catch up as well.

I'm not saying it was or that the film is necessarily worse without it, but it did leave a LOT of things hanging (Peter being the Chosen One subplot and Raja, primarily.) I don't like the idea of Peter being Chosen but it would have given the movie it's own feel and reason for existing, other than making Sony a boatload of cash.

As for the way Lizard looks? I thought it was a bad design myself, especially without his trademark lab coat for the bulk of the film, but that's such a nitpick I don't see how that makes the film as middling as you think it is.

Just one nitpick on a mountain of many. The core of the film is solid yet bland, but take the small stuff into account it ends up being pretty mediocre.

Wow reading Andrex's link I had no idea half that stuff was actual scenes. Would have made the movie an actual movie. Instead we get Gwen Stacey and Peter Parker performing their version of Juno for 5 minutes. And the lack of Indian Evil Guy after the bridge was pretty funny. The non-followup of STAR WRIST MAN, and the possibility that Peter Parker may never be able to afford a $3 Chocolate Milk ever again.

They were their own entities. I highly doubt The Lizard is going to be more iconic than Defoe's Green Goblin or Molina's Doc Ock.

Besides that, Raimi has visual and comedy flare that colored and suited the first two films well. ASM straddled the line between realistic and comicbooky and didn't pull off either that well, IMO.

You know, I think my only complaint is what Oscar said above about how they did the Uncle Ben death and that a lot of the script feels like they just watched Batman Begins/Dark Knight a bunch of times and lifted elements from that.

I totally disagree with Oscar on them screwing up Conners, but then I'm not comparing it to his comic persona.

Also, I liked this movie. Its fun- there's some dumb stuff, ill grant anyone that, but the more I watch the first three spider-man movies the more I realize that these aren't movies I like all that much. I'm tired of Kirsten's horrible mary jane, I am tired of Toby's tears, I am tired of the HORRIBLE delivery of spider-banter, and while I appreciate screaming in Army of Darkness- it gets wayyy tiresome to see Mary Jane do nothing but. It felt like the first Burton Batman all over again.

Nitpicks include an entirely inconsistent soundtrack/score, stupid NEW YORK GITZ BEHIND SPIDER-MAN moment (I HATE this shit in these movies- its stupid feel good barf), emma stone never got naked, lizards head looked all weird- and they made me look at the weird head- stop it; its weird. that weird skateboard tony hawk training montage thing demi pointed out- its true; it seemed weird too.

ALL OF THESE THINGS considered, still more FUN than the original movies. I read my share of spider-man comics, but I dont give a shit about accuracy because THAT IS AN IMPOSSIBLE DREAM OF COMIC NERDS. Cite yer examples of the perfect comic book movies and i'll laugh- whatever...

It's like they based his face design off the super mario bros movie.

It's not perfect, but I felt Batman Begins was about as close to Year One as any comic movie is to any comic TPB. In fact, watching the Year One animated movie was like watching Begins all over again, but with less Rah's and water microwaver stuff.

I agree with your overall point though. A comic movie, to be great, should:

- Adapt the character as closely to the comics as possible
- Be a great movie

ASM has a good Spidey but the movie itself is pretty weak, which is like the opposite of the Raimi films (well, SM2 and maybe 1) (although I never minded Tobey.)

*Do* kids still like skateboarding?  It seems like one of those things that people our age liked when we were younger, and we still think is cool, but kids don't really do anymore aside from a very small sub-group.

where i live it's white adults who skateboard

actually a lot of black and peurto rican kids skateboard like crazy around here.

Let's be honest here since Jewco isn't around: none of Raimi's Spider-hypen-Man movies were any good.  The second one, which often gets called one of the best comic book movies of all time, has long periods of :zzz :zzz :zzz :zzz and stultifying dialogue.

the first was...okay at the time, but i can't go back and watch it again
i liked the second a lot, lots of call-backs to classic doc ock comic issues
the third just made me wish they'd have picked topher grace to be spider-man

I watched the second the other night, and nope, still brilliant.

Totally forgot how cheesily awesome the scene where they try to cut off Doc Ock's arms are. Classic Raimi.

I wonder if we'll ever get a good Venom/Carnage movie.

Fingers crossed the sequel to this one won't do any Green Goblin storyline.  There's so many good Spiderman villains that re-using any of the ones from the still recent trilogy would be a waste (Venom being the exception since it was totally wasted in a bad movie with S3).

Everyone I know here has a skateboard or a longboard, including myself. Could just be a Bozeman thing.

yeah it's a longboard mostly

the only acceptable answers for the next spidey villians are kingpin and kraven. slip punisher in as  cameo, make a new punisher film after.

Fox owns Kingpin (Daredevil.)

Kraven would be pretty cool.

or Ron Paul as The Vulture

I liked Amazing Spider-Man a lot.  I ended up rewatching the Raimi movies the week after (except 3.  I tried rewatching it but it's SO boring.) and SM2 is still great, but SM1 doesn't feel as strong anymore.

Vulture on screen would be so weird.

Kraven would make for the best movie, but he's apparently not toyetic enough so they're not going to hang a movie on him.

Huh? Kids would love a Kraven toy. He's a hunter. He kills shit.

If they go with something like...shocker or electro I will be pissed.

Yeah, Electro could definitely work. Or Scorpion. Or Mysterio, maybe. I know he looks kind of goofy in the comics, but the illusion gimmick could be pulled off well.

It'd be nice to get a main villain who wasn't CORRUPTED BY SCIENCE (I know Spidey 3 had one... two if you count Gobby Jr., but I don't count much from that movie.)

I want the main villain to be corrupted by the spirit of Uncle Ben

I would like to see a Hammerhead/Tombstone gang war with Spider-man caught in the middle. They could use villains who aren't strong enough to carry a movie on their own (Rhino, Shocker, etc.) be their enforcers.

The two guys from Transformers are writing the sequel and Webb was confirmed not to come back so it's pretty hard to think the sequel has any chance of being good, let alone measuring up to SM2.

A team of villains could work if they work towards the same goal.  I always cite the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon as doing a lot of Spider-Man related things right because it did.  But yeah, Mysterio, Chameleon, and Tinkerer as a team could work.  Or Tinkerer is just someone at Oscorp, which later explains the goblin glider for the inevitable Osborne appearance in the third film.

Andrex is right about the sequel.  Speculation won't save it.

I didn't hear about Webb leaving.  I saw rumors, but no confirmation.

Apparently he has a contract with Fox for another 500 Days film, and you know Sony and this franchise. HURRY HURRY HURRY SIX MONTH DEV CYCLE GOTTA GO FAST

It's the same reason Raimi quit SM4.

Raimi was fully on board with making Spider-Man 4, probably because he likes his crew and cast and the character and, well, it's work. SM4 would have paid better than Drag Me To Hell, I'm sure.

He quit because by January 2010, he was still having problems with the script but Sony wanted to make the May 6, 2011 date at all costs. Have they really ended up much better with ASM? With how things turned out they could have given Raimi a whole 'nother year, but they didn't want to budge a couple months.

I feel they're blowing their wad by rebooting so early though. And what happens after this reboot is done? Reboot it again? Diminishing returns are going to hit this franchise fast and hard especially if ASM2 blows like it most likely will. I mean, the franchise got so huge because SM1 was sort of groundbreaking and SM2 was legitimately a good movie. With SM3, ASM, and ASM2, you've got a whole lot of bad/so-so movies all in a row destroying the good will the franchise had built up. I only foresee the franchise going down in flames with Sony's current treatment of it, in a way not unlike what happened to Batman in the 90's.

In conclusion, I'm still bitter Raimi was booted off SM4 for some reason. I legitimately cared about the characters in his movies, whereas I only feel a fraction of that for the new characters (as good as Garfield and Stone are.) I was interested in Raimi redeeming himself and his series and seeing what happened next with the characters.

Will ASM2 have an Aunt May "I believe there's a hero in all of us" moment? Will that ever happen again, for that matter? I'm doubtful.

The rebooting thing is a big problem, though.  It's something DC has to think about with Batman, too, as I imagine the next movie will be a reboot, and we're not ten years away from the last reboot on that one, either.

DC might be in a better position here.  There have been three to five different live action Batmans on film and it is getting to be like Bond.  WB could jump into the next story without an origin or much explanation.  Or WB can introduce the next Batman in the inevitable Justice League movie, then buy an addition two or however many years before the next Batman film proper.  Or go with Batman Beyond as a foreseeable future to any of the Batman movies, and bring more levity and fantastical elements back to Batman without getting too silly.

Just talking about comic movies, I think reboot and general overexposure is going to be problematic going forward.  Marvel is going all in with something like four to six movies coming out.  Fox is rebooting Fantastic Four with Xmen First Class 2 (I'm looking forward to this one, tho).  WB is trying Superman again, but at least they've said that's it for three years.  Sony's gonna be dumb with Spider-Man.  These movies still make money so who knows if the audience will ever get tired of them.
