Title: That's it, we're rewatching Star Trek: The Next Generation

I didn't even know this was a thing until a week ago, but now I'm sold.

Even though it's Season 1, damn this looks sexy. I remember at one point people saying that TNG would never be on Blu-Ray because all the SFX were done on video in 480i, but they went back and redid the SFX and remastered the 35mm film and it looks good. It'll go good next to my TOS and ST movie collection Blu-Rays.

True, but it does have a couple of good episodes, and I think I could watch it again if it's in 1080p.

Datalore is the best Season 1 episode, since it has Lore and the Crystalline Entity. Worst one is probably where they're like LOL PRIME DIRECTIVE and go hang out on the hippie planet and then Wesley steps on a flower and gets the death penalty.

My phaser is set to: "All over my face!"

I've been waiting for this for the longest time! Since when Paramount thought they had lost all of the original film elements and weren't gonna bring it to blu-ray cause of the VHS tapes. I love that its repeatable as well so its gonna stay on all night long.

So much more love went into this series restoration its phenomenal! Comparing this to CBS's previous effort that is TOS, its amazing what they've accomplished here.

but other than that i like it. why is it considered so bad?

I think the quality difference between those two episodes would create an anomaly in my personal warp bubble.

Farpoints problem is that it wasn't originally a two hour episode. The Q stuff was added to make it one.

Never heard that before, but I guess it makes sense. Although, that wasn't even the biggest issue with the first episodes, I'm talking about stiff performances from some of the actors, awkward writing, information dumping, juggling lots of brand new characters, bland sets, and the like. I can still watch it, though, but the difference in quality is really noticeable.

Councillor Troy was passionately molested with rough handed men in one of the Death Wish films, luckily said prurient gangrape turned her into a seriously smoking babe in real life. I actually think Michael Winner might be a paedophile.

The whole Wesley/Traveller arc is actually really good.

Too bad the idiots who did Nemesis never watched the series and had him in a Starfleet dress uniform at the wedding in the beginning.

I'm guessing that was more of a favor to Wil than a big worry about "capital-C Continuity." Plus, if the Traveler can hang out with normal peeps from time to time, who says Wesley can't?

Because they were reused scripts from Star Trek: Phase II. Just like Riker and Troi were reused characters from Star Trek: Phase II (which were also reused in The Motion Picture).

Finished S1.

Fuck it. I'm skipping to season 3.

Season 3 so far:

- direction is better
- editing better
- effects better
- better acting
- better story
- better make up

Like, the first five minutes of Evolution, Enterprise is being rocked and it really feels like a ship being rocked and not a crappy set. This is the TNG I remember.

I just don't get how they could have such a huge quality jump.

The most likely factors in play there were the popularity [which probably led to bigger episode budgets], less network interference, the actors being more familiar with their characters, Gene Roddenberry ceding some control over the series to the younger members of the crew, the arrival of Michael Piller and Ronald D. Moore, and Riker's beard.

I did a similar review of ST:TNG a ways back, re-watching s3, thinking "Wow, this is so great! I bet s2 is better than I remember as well!" I realized during s2 that, yes, it's better than s1, but the climb to s2's quality was definitely a gradual one.
Title: Re: That's it, we're rewatching Star Trek: The Next Generation
Post by: Himu on August 05, 2012, 11:30:45 AM
I don't think I'm missing anything from S2 either, aside from the ep where Q introduced humanity to the Borg. Hypothetically, if someone is new to the series, I suggest they watch s1's best: Heart of Glory, Datalore, Arsenal of Freedom,  Where No One Has Gone Before, 11001001, all Q episodes,  along with the pilot to get a taste of who the characters are, their backgrounds. Then watch Q Who? and then jump into S3.

Of course, I plan on watching all of S2 when it drops on blu ray.

Also, TNG quality is not up to Riker's beard because he has a beard in s2, but their uniforms. S3 uniforms have collars, aren't skin tight, and Troi wears a new uniform every episode to tease your dick with.

Troi is pretty bad.

Character looks nervous.

"I sense that he is nervous and unnerved."

No shit, Toi. Shut the fuck up.

I think Troi should have died instead of Yar. Yar at least had an interesting background and extreme psychosis ("RAPE GANGS!!!!") and had potential to grow as a character. Troi is one note, in every episode.

Gene Roddenberry ceding some control over the series to the younger members of the crew
Gene got kicked off the show basically after the first season, the bulk of the writers bailed because Gene had these rules like "NO CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, THEY ARE PERFECT IN FARPOINT", "ALL RACES IN FEDERATION ARE PERFECT, LECTURE THE REST INTO UTOPIA" and shit and just like with TMP Paramount said "this could be great and make some mad dollar bills, let's get someone who doesn't want Space Jews to be the main enemy."

Gene DESPISED Star Trek VI (my fav) because he felt it was impossible for there to be prejudice in the 23rd century.
I did a similar review of ST:TNG a ways back, re-watching s3, thinking "Wow, this is so great! I bet s2 is better than I remember as well!" I realized during s2 that, yes, it's better than s1, but the climb to s2's quality was definitely a gradual one.
The writers strike derailed season two. So they had to go back and try to create episodes out of scripts they already had including from Phase II and then toss in that clip show to even get to the reduced number of episodes. I forget who it is with, but in an interview one of the people on the show they were basically saying that had that strike gone on longer the show would have ended after two seasons because they were still coasting on the IT'S STAR TREK ON TV AGAIN! fumes.
I don't think I'm missing anything from S2 either
The Measure of a Man. Peak Performance.

The Emissary is vital to Worf's storyline.

I love The Royale because of how stupid AMAZING it is.

Contagion and Time Squared are fun too. I like Where Silence Has Lease but I don't know many people who do.

To boldly go...

:rock One of the best seaons. :bow2

Also bought...

mainly for convenience, and because I read some reviews saying how awesome the stitched together episodes are. Basically, it's just the two episodes with the end of Ep. 1 and the beginning of Ep. 2 cut off so you can watch it together in one go, instead of having to swap discs and watch the intro again when Season 4 comes out (in July). It does have a 30 minute doc on the Borg and a commentary as well, so that's nice.

Also LOL @ Paramount dumping Enterprise S1 out on Blu-Ray this week as well. Enterprise was shot in HD so putting it on Blu-Ray is no big deal compared to TOS or TNG, but they waited until Star Trek 2 was coming out in theaters to release it, probably because they thought that in this period of Trek hype is the only time anyone would buy the damn thing. But then the go ahead and release it the same week as TNG S3, sooo..... :lol

Yeah, it speaks to the idiocy of marketing.

She got better when they just made her a bimbo flaunting her rack instead of her intelligence

Finished S1.

Fuck it. I'm skipping to season 3.

Season 3 so far:

- direction is better
- editing better
- effects better
- better acting
- better story
- better make up

Like, the first five minutes of Evolution, Enterprise is being rocked and it really feels like a ship being rocked and not a crappy set. This is the TNG I remember.

I just don't get how they could have such a huge quality jump.

Aw.  You missed the Space Irish episode.

I recall the Riker-bait was particularly tasty that episode.

Mom’s got a DVR, so I’ve been watching old eps, out of sequence. I still love this show.
