Title: Torchlight 2 OT of GET HYPE FOR MORE LEWT
Post by: Human Snorenado on July 25, 2012, 12:51:09 AM: So, apparently it's gonna be out some time in September but there's still no release date, and the first one was pretty bad but apparently there's a whole lot MORE in this one even if it still looks like a shitty WoW rip off?

I have, of course, already pre-purchased it on Steam because, you know, LOOT AND SHIT. A September release would be pretty dope but that would put it in direct competition with Borderlands 2 (Sep 18th) which I am holding out hope will fix a lot of the issues with the first one (shitty pc version, crap lewt).

Of course, D3 could make all of this moot by 1.0.4 being awesome and it actually coming out in between now and release. Not holding my breath or anything though, I mean I've put 300 hours or whatever into that game so I definitely think I got my monies worth out of it.

Post by: etiolate on July 25, 2012, 01:01:06 AM: When playing the beta, I liked how the initial area allowed you to wander around a bit. I feel good and bad about TQ's and D3's more corridor-like zones. I do like the ability to get lost once in awhile.

Last I heard, they were improving the talent system and that the release had been delayed until some later time. So maybe September?

It is refreshing to hear a lot of positive impressions of T2 from people who have been playing advance copies this past weekend, however. I know it's petty, but I still don't know if I'm ever gonna be able to appreciate the game to the fullest because of the atrocious graphical style.

I can't find the link, but the Engineer has 3 skill trees, one of which is I'm pretty sure combat focused, one is tanky, and one is all about robot followers, so you can play the Engineer as either a brawler type, tank, or control/pets class I guess, or some combination thereof.

To the surprise of absolutely no one, I will be rolling an Embermage to start. I am nothing if not predictable.

Looks like if you want to play a non-tanky Engineer you'd focus on the Blitz tree. After watching Force's video and checking out the Berserker skill trees, I agree that I'll never be playing one- the game is already embarrassing enough to look at, why make me play as a furry on top of that? smh runic

But D3's skills basically limit you to a handful of builds. The game is more gear dependent than skills or stats. It reminds me of WoW in the sense that the skill tree leads you to specific types of builds, and the game's design sort of demands a particular build; you can't turn your Barbarian into a battle mage or something, for instance.

TL2 looks pretty dope outside of the graphical style.

Ok, so it's kind of impossible to talk about this game without comparing it to D3. So, I'm gonna do that.

Initial impressions:

I'm done with the first major quest or whatever; saved the Water Guardian blah blah blah. Story is dumb but whatever.

First of all, I need to make a major distinction. This game is more FUN than D3 so far, but it's not BETTER than D3.

Better than D3:
-Itemization. From lofty heights. LOFTY. There is no contest. The loot is so much better, even at lower piddly levels. There's fun little low level shit set items; I've got 3 pieces of a set right now. The game gets it SO right. D3, look at what they did here, get over trying to control the economy and just embrace it. I saw one item that leveled up the more shit you killed with it; just cool stuff like this that D3 boringly ignores.
-Pets vs. followers. Again, shits on D3 from LOFTY HEIGHTS. I don't want to hear about your dumb fucking backstory... unless you're the scoundrel, and even then hearing you shout your prescripted battle cries gets old the 100th time and positively ear-raping the 1000th. My bird Herpaderp just lets out a screech and starts fucking shit up. Much better. Did I mention pets are actually USEFUL as opposed to followers? You can send their asses to town to sell shit and restock potions n whatnot. You can even have them pick shit up if you want. No contest here.
-Skills. This is just a personal preference thing, but I like dumping points into skills to improve them and picking a tree to focus on as opposed to the rune system. What if you fuck up and spend your points wrong? Well, you're fucked until...
-Modding. Somebody makes a mod for it. Because you CAN.
-Sidequests. More and more varied. Game feels way less linear so far.

Wash:
-Story. Equally dumb on both sides so far.

D3 does it better:
-Combat. More responsive and visceral. Just better.
-Aesthetics. This shit is important. Call me shallow or whatever, but I fucking hate the cartoony TL graphics. Slorebucket, my female Embermage, looks like some sort of cross between a dumb shaman and a hot topic reject. Some of the dungeons are not too offensive, but overall TL2 is raping my eyeballs.
-Enemies. Variety, animations, AI, etc.

Overall, in the beginning it feels like TL2 does a lot of of the little things better but D3 gets the bigger picture better. I'm only level 12 or so, obviously that's subject to change. I was minorly annoyed because I hadn't set up a Runic account, so when I initially logged in and tried to do so, their site was getting hammered by everyone else trying to do the same thing I assume. I was on the verge of being pissed off... until I remembered that if this was D3, I wouldn't have been able to play at all, but because there's an offline mode in TL2 I was fine, just wouldn't be able to play with anyone initially which is ok. So, another thing they got right.

tl;dr: game is awesome, buy it and play it bitches.

Oh! Other shit that rocks- enchanting shit. You'll find secret rooms in dungeons that have wandering enchanter dudes just chilling that will add shit to your items, making them EVEN DOPER. I got a fuck awesome wand with 4 FUCKING GEM SLOTS on like my 2nd hour of playing, fuuuuuuck yeah. Then I started enchanting the shit out of it and now it's a fucking death howitzer. Also, you can dual wield wands if you're a mage, fuuuuuuuuck yeah. This game is all about letting you fuck around and have fun, refreshing change of pace.

Despite Himuro being a sour patch kid, TL1 was the most fun Diablo game I've played in years. Fucking loved it and then enjoyed D3 and I'm sure I'll enjoy TL2. Himuro just has a stick up his butt because he played TL1 on normal.

The thing is, you can play sword n board in any arpg pretty much. The gadget/cannon skill tree is pretty unique and a lot of fun. It has some nice defensive skills on it as well, so you can still tank effectively but nuking shit is just too fun man.

That's another thing- since your skill choices are more or less permanent, you actually have incentive to go back and reroll a new character of the same class if you want to go in a different direction.

I have a single point in Flame Hammer; I usually use the cannon to blast everything out of my way, then if I'm fighting a boss or whatever I will use the Hammer to finish it off and make use of the charge bar.

The Charge Bar is an awesome mechanic, btw. Forgot to mention that.

Yes, and we had some problems with the friends list. For some reason, if I added someone, their name would disappear from the list of they then added me. Then after several tries of doing this, two of us could see each other. The third guy ended up having major PC issues and couldn't play anyway- his PC couldn't handle the game (Torchlight 1 had a netbook mode and would run on fucking ANYTHING, but not this game, it seems) and he decided to go ahead finally buy a new PC.

In-game I didn't have any problems, but my friend kept saying that none of the loot that dropped was labeled...and he made sure the item display was turned on.

Despite these minor online issues, this is a pretty fun little game. Definitely prefer playing multi than alone.

Yeah I noticed this also...

I played for a little this weekend although most of my time went to borderlands. It seems okay. I prefer Diablo 3 but this seems solid enough.

But I don't see there being much reason to keep playing past finishing the "story". But then it's not like Diablo 3 has much of an incentive to keep playing either unless you count farming.

Enchant that fucker! Didn't get the cold damage you need because you have 22% extra cold damage? Pay to remove the enchantments and do it again! What's that, no socket on that awesome gun you finally got cold damage on well we can fix that fuuuuuuuck yeah we can.

One of the first weapons I got was a two handed axe that had 4 sockets and no other stats. The variety of loot and matching it to play styles is what I'm enjoying the most here. It's much more enjoyable than hoping to get a drop with life on hit and the right stats, since you can never afford one on the AH due to farmers.

Like, I'm willing to guess that I'm halfway through the game but it just doesn't seem like that's such an emphasis. I think my Outlander is level 33ish? And while she has some stat bonuses here and there, that doesn't seem like what's driving the game to me so much. Maybe on game+ it will be different, but that's a major difference I've noticed (and really liked) so far.

It makes me think that itemization in D3 is just completely and irrevocably fucked, though.

Anyways, I finished this game with my 50 Embermage on Veteran. Stomped everything in my path. I'll edit this post with my build later.

Basically start by putting all your points into Prismatic Bolt and Charge Mastery. Combined with the right gear, you will never run out of mana, as your Charge will be up before you spend more than 1/4 of your mana.

After that, spend points in the other skills as needed. Frost Phase is a great "oh shit" button for when an enemy suddenly closes the distance. I made this character before I found out you can remove the first skill point in the beginning of the game, so you could probably put that to better use than Magma Spear, because I never used that ability in this build.

Oh and for stats, spend every point in Focus. Every- single- point.

Making Prismatic your default also has the (now apparent) bonus of letting ANY +Element Damage equipment be useful to you.

I was lucky that my friend was fucking around with his alt and found this build when he did, I was able to reroll my character without having to re-do too much.

I'm happy with my points in Hailstorm and Thunder Locus - they both gel well with my "drop it, kite it, loot it" playstyle. My points in the Frozen Fate and Ice Brand passives are also still good (and synergistic) It's just 5 points in Icy Blast that ISN'T EVEN ON MY SKILL BAR anymore. :maf

yeah after switching to Prismatic Bolt, my big build weakness is not enough movement speed. IF I COULD ONLY RUN FASTER I COULD LOOT MORE EFFICIENTLY

The game's okay. I mean, it's comparable to D3, and $20, so that's nice, if you're poor I guess. And it has offline mode and LAN play, which is good if you live on an airplane or in Sweden. But the core combat model just doesn't come close to D3, and that really hurts the moment-to-moment joy of play.

You get a LOT of great items - and often - but the constant stream means their impact is eventually dulled. Itemization is weird; even at the end of the game I was using some iLVL 20-30 items because I never got anything better for that slot.

The game just doesn't seem balanced, or to care about balancing. Which really kind of discourages replayability. At this point I think it's going back on the shelf, Bethesda-game style, until somebody comes and mods a bit more gameplay into the very nice systems.

Anyone saying this game is better than D3 I can only imagine played about 5 hours of each. TL2 does make a better first impression.

Oh, and the art suxxx.

Overall 7.5/10.

Mind boggling, really.

I still haven't beat it but imagine I'll end up largely agreeing with Treesong as we seem to have comparable tastes for these sort of games.
