Week One Upsets

Texas A&M loses on the road to La Tech - That is just the Big 12 fan in me speaking.
Washington State wins at BYU - That is the Mike Leach fan in me speaking.
Navy beats Notre Dame in Ireland - I really hate ND.
Ohio beats Penn St - I think everyone outside Happy Valley is rooting for this upset.
Colorado St beats Colorado in Denver - How is that Pac-10 move been for you Buff fans?
SMU wins at Baylor - SMU has plenty of talent on offense.
Vandy at home beats South Carolina - Vandy held their own last year.

How bad has the WAC become?

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/8276498/idaho-vandals-hoping-leave-wac-turn-independent

The University of Idaho is hoping to join the ranks of college football teams with independent status.

IDAHO wants out.  They even want to go back to the Big Sky conference for other sports. Which makes sense with the two Montana teams and Idaho St.

On a non football related note, I was talking to one of my new job's Sony reps and he used to play football for Missouri. He told me that Kentucky is going to lose the SEC Tournament to Missouri this year in basketball.

I think I'm still laughing hysterically over that thought.

4 more days until the Pirate makes a return to the sidelines. I lived in Lubbock most of the time he was Head Coach at Tech and to celebrate the upcoming college season, quotes that could only come out of Mike Leaches mouth.

In his short time as the WSU coach.

Asked about the health of sophomore quarterback Connor Halliday, Leach offered the following:
“Any stuff on that is so closely guarded. I don’t know if you saw Harry Potter, but in the basement of this building, it’s guarded by serpents and wild dogs and things like that, and you can go try to find the secret to that, but chances of survival – always a risk. Heck, it took until movie five before he got it done himself, and he had magic powers. Anyway, he’s doing just fine and we’re excited about him.”

Leach was asked who would win a battle of the Pac-12 mascots.
“Do you want to fight a buffalo? I don't know, those buffalo are big. You know, buffalo are significantly bigger than elk. I grew up near Yellowstone so I've been near buffalo. Buffalo are huge. And then the other thing I've always gotten a kick out of: When you play Colorado, there's those buffalo dragging those six handler around. Those handlers aren't dragging the buffalo. The buffalo's dragging him.”

From his time a Texas Tech

After a victory over Texas A&M
“Sometimes a Pirate beats a Soldier.”

“If you get into a fight, don’t take your helmet off. We’re looking for smart football players, not dumb ones.”

Before the 2008 Texas Tech/Oklahoma game
“The thing most people don’t understand about Bob is what a great guy he is to work for. Most head coaches love to talk. It’s just their nature. But with him, it’s not like he’s Mr. Chairman of the Board or anything. He’s unique because he’s a listener. He’s interested in what others on the staff have to offer. He taught me that. So I’ll listen — up to a point. But pretty soon, I’ll tell them all to shut up because I like to talk.”

On tortilla throwing Tech fans in 2002
“At no level do I see where the Red Raider football team is responsible at all for any tortillas being thrown. We watch over them very carefully, and before they ever go on the field, we ensure that none of them have tortillas.”

Did you follow Craig James' senate run here in Texas?
Mike Leach: Well, I think the results are what everybody expected. I think I share the same opinion as 97 percent of the others in this state. Correct me if I am wrong.

On the Aggie Corps of Cadets:
"How come they get to pretend they are soldiers?  The thing is, they aren't actually in the military. I ought to have Mike's Pirate School. The freshmen, all they get is the bandanna. When you're a senior, you get the sword and skull and crossbones. For homework, we'll work pirate maneuvers and stuff like that."

On "system" quarterbacks:
"If B.J. is a product of the system, then he's not getting any of those touchdown passes and all those yards. That means our coaching staff is," Leach said. "That would also mean we could go down to 7-Eleven and get the clerk behind the counter and let him play quarterback."

On BJ's 661 passing yards against NC State:
"It's better than 660 yards, but not as good as 662 yards."

On running up the score against Nebraska in 2004 (the final as 70-10):
"The interesting thing about football is that football is the only sport where you quit playing when you get a lead. In golf, you keep trying to score well when you’re ahead. In basketball, they don’t quit shooting when they’re ahead. In hockey, they don’t quit shooting when they’re ahead. In boxing, you don’t quit punching when you’re ahead. But in football, somehow magically, you’re supposed to quit playing when you’re ahead. Well, I don’t subscribe to that. I don’t do it like that. And you know, the truth of the matter is, Nebraska never has either."

After getting slaughtered by A&M in a game they were expected to win
“As coaches, we have to solve our failure on reaching them, and the players have to listen,’’ Leach said. “I’m willing to go to fairly amazing lengths to try to make that happen. I don’t know if I’ll be successful this week or not, but I am going to try and there will be some people inconvenienced, and if it happens to be their fat little girlfriends, too bad.’’

His "apology" on Monday.
“As coaches, we failed to make our coaching points more compelling than (the players’) fat little girlfriends,’’ Leach said. “Fat little girlfriends have some obvious advantages. For one thing, their fat little girlfriends are telling them what they want to hear, which is how great you are and how easy it’s going to be.’’

Hopefully Ohio can close out the upset. They are the favorite to win the MAC this year.

I'm also pulling for a Toledo/Arizona upset also. The game should easily pass 55 total points.

I knew KS was totally overrated, and think they have a good chance of dropping their next game as well. Oregon is fun to watch, but they can't win against good defenses. Feel bad for them...they dropped the one game they really needed to win, and now they are screwed barring a miracle. I was hoping they would go through and play ND for the MNC, as I think it would be a good game (I'd love to see ND shattered). Now I'm stuck rooting for USC lol.

I really hope UF doesn't go through. They are horrible. LSU really shat the bed on that one (and Bama, but FL was much worse). Rooting for FSU next weekend. Would have been another really good year for a playoff. There are probably going to be a bunch of lopsided bowls this year.

I think Michigan fans are probably in for a rude awakening overall in terms of the future of the Big Ten. OSU isn't going anywhere, despite the sanctions; if it wasn't for sanctions they'd probably be the #2 team in the country; Nebraska will get better once Martinez is gone; Wisconsin is clearly still a force. Iowa is also heading in the right direction, and MSU should be better next year. The days of Michigan waltzing to the Big Ten championship are long gone.

Eh, Bama definitely is as good as they have been in the past. I thought they would have rolled LSU, Texas A&M, and UGA, but that didn't come close to happening.

I've been a MAC fan for 20 some years now and it's so bittersweet to see one of their teams actually breakthrough and get a big bowl game. NIU is a solid team, but not one of the all-time great teams the league has seen. They don't really deserve it, but I am still excited anyways.

Sounds like it; he's meeting NFL teams tomorrow, with the Bills allegedly in hot pursuit. Also during the game the announcers noted that the top candidate to replace Kelly is the current offensive coordinator

Any predictions for tonight? I think it will be a close game at half and then Alabama will put a whopping on them in the second half. 34-13

Title: Re: 2012 College Football Thread
Post by: Brehvolution on January 07, 2013, 10:03:50 AM
I can't believe ND is getting 10 points as the favorite. I don't think it will be close. Alabama's defense is going to be straight beast mode and if muricans haven't heard yet, TJ Yeldon will be a household name after tonight.
Title: Re: 2012 College Football Thread
Post by: Phoenix Dark on January 07, 2013, 10:30:33 AM
27-16 Bama. I think the score will be deceptive; ND's defense will prevent Alabama from going completely crazy but the Tide will shut them down in the second half (and dominate the clock).

Aside from that, the Browns have to compete in a division that has two of the more competent managements in the NFL (Baltimore and Pittsburgh) and they can not attract Free Agents of any kind.

title game was boring shit salad

would have preferred and Oregon/Bama game -- could be 50/50 either way especially with how Alabama played against LSU and A&M, and since Oregon runs the same offense as A&M, well... it would have been a very exciting game either way. Oregon D could hold Alabama, I think.

and since Mariota is stupid hot and SINGLE, we wouldn't get multiple boring cam shots of his gf/wife.

McCarron...hmmm. He has the size, his arm isn't bad...I'm very curious about his NFL potential. Obviously he benefits from the Bama system but he diced a pretty good ND defense tonight and was consistent all year.

 :lol

Now, yeah, I guess they scored 7/8 points more.  They managed to hit 2 hail mary-type plays.  Congratulations on the low percentage throws, they hit 2 out of 5 or 6 they attempted.

Now, I'd have to go back and rewatch that game, but from vague memory, I'd say Michigan's defense tried harder against Alabama than ND's did.  Roughly the same result, though.

I guess it's the sign that we need the playoffs, cause the alternative of say OSU making it in over Alabama (or say KSU not losing to Baylor), is that the Alabama team that literally opened it's fly and pissed on a curb-stomped ND, would have been left out.

Though, I'm sure at least UGA would have done the same.
