AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — With stunning swiftness, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency said Thursday night it will strip Lance Armstrong of his unprecedented seven Tour de France titles after he dropped his fight against drug charges that threatened his legacy as one of the greatest cyclists of all time.
This is kinda fucked up.
-
How is this fucked up?
Everybody knows that anyone that wins the Tour is a doper.
-
No, not everybody, seeing as this is the first time I've heard it.
Please, explain.
-
The USADA has been out to get Armstrong for over a decade. I'm shocked they finally won. Though I'm not sure I'd call this winning. They seem to be jumping at the first chance to declare victory. We'll probably see this dragged out for another decade.
-
Dude do you watch cycling?
-
Youre just fucking with me prob
-
It's dumb that Armstrong looses his victories and now other's earn them that were just as doped as Armstrong was (like Ullrich, who will probably earn 3 victories now, although he himself is already convicted of doping). Cycling is fucked period. I guess the only positive thing from this could be that this decision discourages young drivers from doping as they see how once legacy can be destroyed, but I doubt it.
-
Yeah they are all dopers. Fucking cycling
-
It was always suspect that the other winners from that period were busted but somehow Lance was clean. I'm not convinced either way about him though.
-
I really didn't know that doping was that big of a problem in cycling. You hear about it in all sports so I just figured it was one of those things.
And I really don't watch that much cycling. I like to watch the last few minutes of it though. It's like watching F1 or Nascar racing. All the stuff in the middle, except for the wrecks, is mostly just boring.
-
Yeah I thought so Groogrux, I think cycling has the biggest problem with doping of all mainstream sports.
It's so bad I don't even believe there's straight riders anymore, just people that don't get caught.
And you should try to watch a mountain stage man, it's the shit :bow2 Even if they are all dopers they push their bodies to the limit.

he's never been tested positive right? not sure how they can take away anything with no real proof

They said they have a positive sample from 2009.

my facebook feed is furious right now

When it was a bunch of foreigners with funny names nobody gave a shit. Now that it's Our Boy Lance, zomg witch hunt!
Is there a solid medical basis for not allowing the type of doping that goes on in cycling? Or is it one of those arbitrary purity-of-the-sport deals?
-
Basically, it's like they have a race in cycling and then they disqualify the top ten finishers for doping afterwards.
-
I'm glad this thug has been brought to justice
-
I'll feel a lot safer with Lance Armstrong off the streets.
-
LIVESTRONG bracelets make great tourniquets, you guys.
-
He'll have to give back all his wealth and get cancer back. :fbm

I find it weird that the USADA would have a positive sample but the people in charge of the Tour, who tested him almost daily at one point, did not.
Either way, it looks like he isnt admitting guilt, just dropping the lawsuit to save money.
-
legalize, bitches.
I don't give a shit what means sports people use to sport - the point is that they are cool because they sport really well and I bet you they could sport much better if doping was legal and talented sport people were bred into mutants for their specific niches. all world records would be bested twice over.
-

yeah.... the fuck they do. They've been scratching their balls coming up with a way to nail him and, whether he was or wasn't doping, they've had fuck all in the way of evidence.
Suddenly - BOOM!- it appears. One positive sample... and from 3 years ago! No way. No fucking way.
So then we are down to a "trial" where you have a load of convicted juiced ex-cyclers testifying against Armstrong and that apparently seems to be the basis for the whole thing.
Why on earth would you bother? I know the whole "clearing your name" thing but this has been going on for years now and then a sheer number of people saying "OH HE WAS A DIRTY CHEAT!" is enough to ruin someone even without a shred of evidence. Hilariously , you have actual convicted cheats -based on samples-/confessions of guilt being the ones testifying.
the top and bottom of it is : regardless of whether he did or did not dope, they haven't a single fucking drop of evidence against him (I'm going out on a limb and guessing the "2009 test we definitely have" would suddenly vanish once they got him into the trial).

If there was actually a positive sample for Lance Armstrong it would have been used long before now. I feel like Lance stopped fighting because he seen the endgame was that they just wanted to ruin his name and bleed him dry in spite. At least this way he keeps some of his money he earned/made.

personally i think competitive sports would be a lot more interesting if they let athletes take whatever kind of drugs they want.
-
Is this the point in the thread where I start making vortex jokes?
-
Given that they're probably all drugged, what are the chances I get awarded those Tour de France wins?
I did watch a few clips of it on tv back then. I think... Maybe. Fuck, I dunno. But those medals might look better hanging on the wall than my Best Attendance awards.

I don't think the tour contionously tests their old samples with new methods. It's an ongoing race between doping and doping detection, where the detectors always try catch up. If someone checks old samples with new methods, it's possible that something could be found that the tour wasn't even able to back when they tested the sample for the first time. I guess there are also different statues of limitations depending on organization and association that would be in charge. According to the world anti doping agency this are 8 years, so Armstrong couldn't lose his titles until 2004.

Or at least have alternate competitions in backwoods countries. Would be much more interested in the doped olympics, and it would help answer important questions like; How much better is a man with money and drugs?

Quitter. Somewhere Greg LeMond is laughing his ass off.
