Title: Entire population of Japan drafted into FFXIV fixing effort
Post by: recursivelyenumerable on September 01, 2012, 03:05:01 PM
Well maybe not quite yet, but they seem to have gone beyond pulling in people from other Square Enix teams and are now sucking in other noted creators from elsewhere in the industry: http://www.siliconera.com/2012/09/01/etrian-odyssey-and-trauma-center-director-now-working-on-final-fantasy-xiv/

Because rebooting a critically failed MMO is totally possible

It is possible if we all pitch in and give it all we've got.

If its good by the time the PS3 version launches I'll try it out. That's my stance and I'm sticking to it.

The game sounds completely new, from the ground up.

I'm still amazed at how they handled this; the public apology, how quickly they came to the decision of literally rebuilding an entire MMO, how quickly they formed the team, how quickly the team grew and how much money they threw at them, etc. I've never seen a company scramble to damage control. Is it sheer pride or was the financial future of the company relying on a FFXI successor?

Either way, I'd pay to watch a documentary.

I made sure to pick up my copy of FFXIV from Amazon for $10 so that I can say that I was there when the biggest disaster in gaming history finally hit critical levels.

So, I can blame Square-Enix and FF14 for no more Trauma Center games?  :-\ :'(

I'm pretty sure they relied a lot on the constant revenue stream from FFXI. Which makes it extra weird they fucked up FFXIV so badly, I'd def be interested to know what went on.

I don't think it can be saved though, even if it's redone. There has never been a MMO comeback.
Quote
In December 2003, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada announced that there were over 200,000 subscribers to Final Fantasy XI, allowing the company to break even and start making a profit.[88] There were between 200,000 and 300,000 active players daily in 2006

This shows how big of a cash cow FFXI was for SE. The game became profitable in 2003. So even if you look up to 2006 thats 2 years of profit on a 250k playerbase at 10$ a month...

Just in revenue thats 24 months x 250k players x 10 bucks = $ 60.000.000 AT LEAST.

That doesn't factor in these folks also bought a boxed copy and shit and that the game continued to be played till this day. Thats 10 years of profit...

There will be no more games of any kind until FFXIV is successful. The only way out is through, so suck it up and get back to rowing.

Welp, at least at the end of the FFXIV should be a pretty damn awesome game.  Probably a huge flopped one.  But there's a good chance it'll be one of the better MMOs with all these great staffers working on it for so long.

Too bad MMO quality is often directly proportional to player quantity. You can't have a good online experience with 1000 players concurrent worldwide.

Why would they spend 5 years making one game? Look at Nomura, he has the time to just up and make several in the span of 3 years. I mean wtf, Square Enix?
