Nokia has officially unveiled its new flagship smartphone, the Lumia 920. As expected, Nokia's new Lumia has received a bump in specs over the previous iteration, with a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual core processor, a slightly larger 4.5-inch curved glass display with a 768 x 1280 resolution, a 2,000mAh battery, and the new Windows Phone 8 operating system. Nokia is calling its new display the "PureMotion HD+," and says that it's the "best smartphone display innovation" the company has ever made, with "better than HD resolution" and fast refresh rates Nokia says it's the "brightest smartphone HD display ever," and also the "fastest LCD display ever shipped on a smartphone." Nokia is also touting the PureMotion HD+'s daylight viewing capabilities, and says that the phone's color tone and brightness automatically responds to sunlight. You can see our impressions and hands-on photos of the Lumia 920 right here.
Nokia says the new Lumia will come in "vibrant colors" (the yellow, red, white, grey, and black pictured above), and features a one-piece polycarbonate body. As expected, Nokia is also pulling a couple of tricks out of its sleeve: it's adding wireless charging for the Lumia 920, built on the Qi wireless power standard. Nokia is also incorporating its "PureView" camera technology, but just don't get too excited: we're looking at an 8.7 megapixel sensor in the 920, not the 41 megapixels in the PureView 808. Nokia says the 920 features a "floating lens" optical image stabilization system that allows for sharper photographs in low-light situations, a better app and camera interface, and 1080p video recording.
CEO Stephen Elop declined to give specific pricing or release dates, but he did say that Nokia would be entering "select markets" with "intense focus" in Q4 of 2012.

We’re excited about the Lumia 920 and the ground-breaking PureView imaging capabilities we announced today.
In an effort to demonstrate the benefits of optical image stabilization (which eliminates blurry images and improves pictures shot in low light conditions), we produced a video that simulates what we will be able to deliver with OIS.
Of course, hindsight is 20/20, but we should have posted a disclaimer stating this was a representation of OIS only. This was not shot with a Lumia 920. At least, not yet. We apologize for the confusion we created.
We are looking forward to bringing the Lumia 920, with PureView optical image stabilization to select markets later this year.
Here is the video shown at the press conference shot using a Lumia 920. On the right is a Lumia 920 prototype with OIS. On the left is a smartphone without OIS. The difference is apparent.

Wanna explain what's shitty about it?

Can't wait. This will be my next phone

Less developer support.
-
The lady at the AT&T store looked at me like I just kicked her in the puss when I toyed with the idea of switching to this from an iPhone.
-
Looks like even more of a toy than the iPhone, quite the feat.

Well, a good reason for that was WP7 limited development code.
WP8 fixes all that.
-
Is anyone really lining up to put apps on there though? I cant see it taking off and I dont see the benefit of buying in early for something lacking apps I want.
-
Wife and I are finally leaving the world of regular phones and getting smart phones next week. Will probably go with the iPhone 4S, but the Windows phones are pretty cool. The lack of apps is the big reason why we're going with Apple.

What does "limited development code" even mean? :lol
Also lol at Nokia/Microsoft throwing the previous Lumia users under a bus. Even Google ain't that cold blooded.

Apple will be announcing the next iphone in like a week. wait for the details on the next one even if you will still go for a 4s, prices will probably drop too.

Just get a GNex, yo. Even Drinky likes JB.
-
Doesn't Windows phone lack app support? Seems like S3 is the best way to go.

TouchWiz. :yuck
Windows Phone lacks apps and the funny part is NOBODY on Windows Phone 7 is getting upgraded to Windows Phone 8. :lol Lol good job inspiring confidence in your devs Microsoft, I'm sure they'll come flocking to your third phone platform in as many years. ::) Surely THIS one is "the one!!"

WP8 has a more mature API surface (full D3D support, some Windows 8 APIs, more integration possibilities, better performance through "real" CLR 4.5 + machine-dependent IL based AOT optimization provided as an app store service).
Anyway app support for WP7 is actually pretty good, considering it's a relatively new minority platform.

That's the plan, we figured there will be a price drop on the 4S.

I don't know what any of that means.

I don't know what any of that means.
GNex = Galaxy Nexus
JB = Android 4.1 Jail Bait

If anybody wants to browse their app store here is the link:
http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/apps
I am much happier with the ios appstore but if i really liked the 920 then this will probably do.
-
I'm probably the only person that doesn't really give a shit about apps. My phone is mostly about music, maps and web browsing. I can get a gym app, shazaam and play FF1 on my Windows Phone. That's really all I need. I never understood the fascination with hundreds of apps that don't really do anything of value. *shrug* The OS is smooth and beautiful and my phone always works. That's better than I can say for my Android experience. Buggy and slow POS. Bleh. No thank you.
-
Yeah, I am over apps. At this point, I want:
- Facebook
- Spotify
- Maps
- Browser
- Kindle
- Mail
- Camera
- A good RSS reader
As long as I have that, I don't really care about the rest...
It sounds like a lot of the existing apps are janky, but here's hoping WP8 can turn that around.
-
That's really all I need.
Should be the WP tagline at this point.
Windows Phone: Three apps? That's all I need.™
As long as I have that, I don't really care about the rest...
Edit- No wait, this should be it.
Windows Phone: I don't really care about the rest...™
-
Unfortunately, Nintendo's already trademarked that slogan :'(
-
How about this?
Windows Phone 8: Forget about Windows Mobile, the Kin, and Windows Phone 7. Now we're totally serious. Guys? ...Guys?™
-
Im with Treesong, im over apps. I want the basics and some game now and again... Camwra is more important to me.
-
it's kind of sweet and heartwarming to see someone discovering for the first time that not everyone else in the world shares his priorities and worldview
-
I have a shitload of apps on my Galaxy Nexus and I only use maybe 10 regularly. I'm also over them.
-
Andrex takes this shit way too seriously

:lol Not even close.

social apps + games = all you need
all the rest could be ignored if i could get a browser that isnt shit on my phone ipod touch ( :'( )

You'll also probably be able to find tons of cheap 4S's on craigslist immediately after the announcement.

I think iOS has a significant advantage in gaming apps but if you don't care too much about that, then you'll be able to find pretty much any type of app you want on any app store.
Android is finally getting out of the buggy/slow gutter. Of course timely OS updates vary depending on manufacturer but it looks like companies are getting better about that.
-
Android is fine now, except it lags behind in the gaming apps on iOS, but there is enough games to keep a casual busy.
-
Some apps can't be ported or done without the OS supporting these API models, borys.

Nobody cares about any of this when they are phoning, texting or using google maps.
The main thing end users should notice is that the obnoxious lag and startup times a lot of apps still have should be improved considerably
