Title: Apple just can't seem to wrap their head around wifi
Post by: Eel O'Brian on September 20, 2012, 12:10:47 AM
Every time there's an iOS update they somehow manage to shit the bed on the wifi. iOS 6 has totally fucked my wifi. Works for about 5 minutes then goes into endless loading mode until I "forget network," reconnect, then do it all over again five minutes later. Note to self: wait a month before updating next time.

I had some Wi-Fi issues with my iPad earlier today. Clearing Safari's history and cookies and then resetting the network settings seemed to fix it. I don't know if it's the exact same issue as you're having though.

Thanks, but that worked about as well as everything else. It's just totally fucked, works for a minute then loses signal.

Does anyone have a link to somewhere where I can get the last version of iOS?

yeah, I think I'll hold off on updating.

I use google maps on my iphone quite a lot so this right here might be a deal breaker for me with getting an iphone 5.  Originally I was hesitant to leave because of all the money I've sunk into itunes over the years but really the only thing I'm using my phone for is phone stuff - texting, phone calls, and GPS/maps.  All the apps and music are for my ipad and ipod(s).

Galaxy S3, here I come.

Yup.  But I'm getting an iPhone 5 within the next two weeks, so I'm gonna have to use iOS 6.

You can still use Google Maps on iOS6...set a shortcut to the web app: http://www.businessinsider.com/get-google-maps-back-on-iphone-2012-9?op=1

And you can always use the MapQuest app, which works pretty well and has voiced turn by turn navigation.

Apple should just bring in Bing Maps. Not like Microsoft is a threat to them in the mobile space.

Neither was Google a few years ago.

I was thinking about getting an iPhone 5 but this is a serious killer for me. I doubt it. I don't think iOS 5 has support for the 1136 x 640 resolution.

Some sites say that Google wants to let Apple swallow all this bad press and then release the app around Christmas. But 9 to 5 mac says that the Google app was already submitted for approval, but that Apple is stalling it until they can update their own app to make some small but noticeable improvements.

Realistically, I think it'll be at least a year before the Apple app is up to par. I don't know why they didn't wait until the next iPhone.

I had the opportunity to download iOS 6 and cancelled it for now.

I use the Maps application all the time since I do quite a bit of travelling for work.  This update would effectively neuter one of my most used features on my phone.

I'm sure the Apple bungtonguers are trying their hardest to pretend that this update is like totally ossom.  We haven't heard from BrandNew yet so I'm curious as to what the spin is like.

Didn't they buy a few different mapping companies and have been working on this maps app for like 3 years? On paper, it looked like they were going to have a pretty decent application but there is so much wrong/missing data that that makes this app at best useless in some parts of world.

They say that they need to put it in the public's hands to work out the kinks, I'm wondering how could that help? Will people just manually update whenever POI or street names are wrong? If after a week nothing changes, IP5 owners are probably going to give Android and WP8 a hard look before they get out of their refund period.

This is kind of a disaster really, having a shitty native maps app is probably worse than having a small screen or lacking LTE.

well I bit and bought the 5.  Needed to update from the 4 anyway.

The screen is really nice.  I think they are using some new tech, the colors stand out a lot more than on the 4.  Also I love the back of this thing.

And goddam LTE is blazing.  I'm getting 30 up AND down.  Shit's crazy.

I really, really dislike the map app. It doesn't matter if its getting some results wrong while the rest is rest, the bottom line is that ain't damn reliable and I wouldn't trust with my life like I did with google's. And now they're telling me to be patient, but for how long, and with what metric should I measure its accuracy? When I stop arriving at the wrong airports or train stations?

Yeah, you can report errors directly in the app. My colleague did this the other day when he realized AppleMaps didn't get the location of our office right, and it was fixed the day after. So at least they do seem to have people working on these database corrections.

Do the following:

-Go the App Store and download the free MapQuest app.
-Open Safari and go to maps.google.com.
-GoogleMaps will automatically prompt to set itself on your home screen.
-You'll now have a shortcut to the Google Maps page on your home screen that looks just like an app.
-Use it and MapQuest and pretend that the Apple Maps app doesn't exist.

Man, I am such a dumbass. I'd rolled back to iOS 5.1.1, but I was reading all these "solutions" around the internet, and since Apple force-downloaded that 2GB  iOS 6 file to my iPad, I figured I'd upgrade again and give some of them a shot. No go, on any of them. I can't even roll back again, it's giving me some "unknown error." So now I have a pretty much useless iPad.

I read somewhere on the Apple board where someone actually suggested buying a new router as a solution.

Is it really 2GB? Fuck that pisses me off. I could have used that space to update some large apps.

And how do you rollback? I didnt go to 6 but I'm still curious
Title: Re: Apple just can't seem to wrap their head around wifi
Post by: Eel O'Brian on September 23, 2012, 06:07:15 PM
Yeah, right at 2GB, I had 6.9 GB free space before the update, and 8.8 GB after.

Get the ipsw file for iOS 5.1.1 here:

http://osxdaily.com/2012/05/07/ios-5-1-1-download-links/

then, in itunes, hold down your shift key when clicking restore and from the pop-up window find the folder where you downloaded the ipsw file and select it. That's it. You may have to rename the file extension, Win7 turned mine into a .zip file after it downloaded, and it needs to be a .ipsw file for itunes to see it.

Man, the Japanese maps are so goddamn bad, compared to the Google ones they look like they were mapped out like 50 years ago or something, there's barely anything there.  There's no consistiency at all with the characters, it's half English and half Japanese, and the searching is completely screwed up, some things can only be searched in one language.  The level of detail is random on what shows when you zoom.

Half of the businesses in my neighborhood have been long since out of business, there's a McDonalds listed there which was closed before I even moved in several years ago and had been converted to a supermarket.  The McDonalds near a station is listed twice in two different buildings, as is the actual station name.  The Family Mart down the street closed a long time ago and changed into a Lawson.  Major attractions like the Round One nearby are missing.  The big department store near my place only shows up as a bank, probably due to having an ATM for it.  The nearby river and bridge are completely in the wrong spot, located right in the middle of a residential area.  There are really bizarre points of interest shown, for some reason they mapped out several "Parking Meter" spots.

What an embarassment.  Siri is also worthless here, still can't give you local directions or assistance.  She also can't help you with information on Japanese sports teams, asking for the score of the Tigers game gives you the MLB team.

Opening an app pops it up from the bottom based on where on the screen it was. When taking a pic, the pic zooms out and to the right before the live camera feed slides back in. That kind of thing.

The JB keyboard is different from the ICS one in that it will try to predict the next word you'll type before you've typed a single letter, based on what you've typed so far.

So, typing "the quick" will pop up "brown" as one of the next suggestions, then "fox" after that. It lets you bang out often-used phrases very quickly.

I typed that example up without knowing if it would actually work, but I just tried it and it does.

Yeah that's what Swiftkey also does. I can often type a text message by just pressing the space bar.

I need to try the JB keyboard. But I've got a Sprint GS2 which will probably never get it and a Transformer which Asus is dragging their feet on updating.

Did you try to hard reset your router before flashing it? Might be easier for some.

Weird issue for sure but glad you got it sorted out.

Finally got this shit working. I went to the router downloads page, downloaded the zip file of the firmware, and just reinstalled it. Seems to be working fine so far (since last night). So, if you're having wifi issues, try reinstalling your particular router's firmware, even if you're on the latest version like I am.  Won't hurt anything if it doesn't work.  It's a definite iOS 6 bug.

Wait...how is it an iOS bug if you had to reinstall your router firmware?

It just is, so shut up!

:lol

because it's affecting many different people with many different brands of routers, and there's no guaranteeing what i did will work for everyone who's having the same exact problem i am?

I keep cancelling the download prompt for iOS 6 whenever it pops up and now iTunes has turned into unstable shitware.  Now I pretty much have to go into Task Manager to force it to close now.  This never happened before iOS 6 was offered.

It's a conspiracy! :hans1

My wife, myself, and some other family members have all upgraded to iOS6 on iPhones and iPads.  We haven't had a single problem.  It runs better and I've also noticed that it now allows me to transfer new comics to Comic Zeal much faster than before.

I have no complaints -because I am ignoring the Apple maps app- and am looking forward to getting an iPhone 5 next week.  My iPhone 4 home button is messed up.  Tried cleaning it with different methods but nothing has worked.

I upgraded to iOs 6 last night on the iPhone, the only differences I see are:

1. Maps suck balls, but are pretty hilarious to mess with.
2. People on my Facebook friends list now show up as phone contacts (with their phone numbers)

There are some other small changes.  I like Safari now lets you hide the menus and browse full-screen in landscape mode.  Chrome does this too IIRC...haven't tried Skyfire yet.

You can also reply to incoming calls with text messages now.

Here's the crap Apple thinks is important.  LOLMAPS.

Yeah, no reason to get the 5 so I'm getting a S3 in December. Unless something better comes out between now and then. Now that my boss has one and loves it, I have no reason to stay with iPhone. I'm not really an app junkie anyway. I just was to be able to text, read twitter, and surfing with a browser that supports flash will be a welcome change.

The first smartphone I had was a Palm Treo in 2001(?) or 2002.  Things have definitely improved quite a bit since then!

But I hate how so many smartphone models don't have buttons.  Touchscreens aren't the best for everything.

Got my iPhone 5 tonight.  The restore process from my back up was super-quick, but I am currently backing it up again after downloading a few apps and it's going as slow as ever.   :-\

Compared to the 4, the 5 is clearly more powerful.  I tried SFxTK Mobile and it ran incredibly smooth, but for stuff I actually use the phone for on a daily basis, there's no difference.  But the camera is better and I'm looking forward to trying out 4G on the train tomorrow.

Definitely feels like a minor upgrade, as expected.

The only reason I would want buttons is if it's a full qwerty keyboard. Otherwise give me more screen space

I would sacrifice a thinner phone for a slide-out keyboard with arrow keys or even a mini d-pad for games.

Well, for whatever reason, it downloaded (but not updated) iOS 6.  I didn't recall accepting the prompt as I always hit cancel.  So I thought "what the hell" and updated the phone.  Big mistake.  The maps app sucks worse as it completely biffs it on even the most obvious locations.  I'm going to be heading to Chicago tomorrow so we'll see how it works when I'm over there, since I'm not really familiar with the city.  In the past, I could rely on the old app but I printed out a Google Map of directions just in case.

And I'm not going to be a fucking free bug tester and reporter for Apple.  You have to be a BrandNew level  (http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/public/style_emoticons/NEW/buttlick.gif) to do that kind of shit.

I'll be updating from my 3G to a 5 in a couple weeks. Sucks about the maps but if it is much faster than my 3G I'll just go in the web browser to use google maps that way. Anyone try the bing maps app? I heard that was an alternative.  :-\

My guess is that Nexus = Pure Android straight from Google, nothing added, removed or touched.

While other Android phones are modified Android with bloatware and shit.

Now that I answered your question, please support Windows Phone 8.

It's stock, and gets updated quicker. S3 is fast but not as it could be because of BarfWhiz. The Nexus is better designed (nice curved screen that is big, but not borderline-Note levels.)

And, well, it comes with Jelly Bean now and has had it for months.

The S3 has a better camera, processor, and more RAM. It has a slightly larger screen but it feels about the same size in your hand because the bezel is smaller.

The advantage of the nexus is all in the software. It is already on JB and will get the next update soon. The main advantage of JB is that the OS runs a little smoother and you have Google Now which is like a super smart search feature. The GS3 is getting JB soon though.

I'll be a bit surprised if the S3 gets the next android update though. No idea what improvements are planned for it. I don't really have a strong opinion on touchwiz but obviously manufacturers wouldn't be adding this extra software layer unless they knew most people liked it.

An extra software layer that adds shortcuts and apps that the manufacturer thought should be standard. It does slow down the phone a little but I don't think that's noticeable on  the GS3 what with a quad-core and 2 gigs of RAM

This monstrosity:

Aesthetically uneven is putting it nicely. Gut-wretchingly horrible abomination is putting it more harshly, but more accurately. Slows down the phone, slows down updates, includes a ton of crap you don't want just so Samsung can pretend they're using a totally different OS when they're really not.

Stick with the good stuff:

There's some good options but I would definitely wait until the week of black friday. You'll see how the newest nexus stacks up and you'll probably be able to get an insane deal on it (or anything else) from amazon.

Plus you can see the new Lumia 920, which is "not that bad".

Apple Acknowledges iPhone 5 Camera Problem, Says You’re Holding It Wrong
Jesus Diaz

After initially denying it, Apple has acknowledged the iPhone 5's purple flare camera problem in an email to a Gizmodo reader. Their solution: "Angle the camera away from the bright light source when taking pictures."

Here's their complete answer:

Quote
    Dear Matt,

Our engineering team just gave me this information and we recommend that you angle the camera away from the bright light source when taking pictures. The purple flare in the image provided is considered normal behavior for iPhone 5's camera. If you wish to reach me regarding this case number *********, please contact me at 1-877-***-**** ext. *******. I currently work Thursday-Monday: 7:00am - 3:30pm Mountain Time. If you reach my voicemail, please leave your name, phone number, case number and the best time to reach you. Email is ***********@apple.com.

    Sincerely,
    Debby
    AppleCare Support

Long time Gizmodo reader Matt Van Gastel received this email after a long call with Apple support regarding the Purple Flare problem in his phone, which apparently is a feature common to every iPhone 5:

Initially I was told that it shouldn't happen and that it is strange. My call was escalated to a senior support individual who again said it was odd and shouldn't happen. I sent her some pics of the issue and she in turn sent them to the engineering team.

Her final response is what you can see at the top of this article. Some photography experts have speculated that the purple flare is a product of the sapphire glass covering the iPhone 5's camera.

Apple Acknowledges iPhone 5 Camera Problem, Says You're Holding It Wrong Apple Acknowledges iPhone 5 Camera Problem, Says You're Holding It Wrong Apple Acknowledges iPhone 5 Camera Problem, Says You're Holding It WrongLamp and truck photos by @weaksauce12

So it is final, folks: Apple says that, if your photos have a purple flare, this is totally normal behavior of the iPhone 5's camera. You are just holding it wrong.

Also, it's not Apple's fault that the Sun is purple. [Thanks Matt!]
